Yeah, I think I'll look into Utawarerumono (that's almost as difficult to type as it is to pronounce), too.
Soul Hunter is a great series, in my opinion. But I find it's one of those things where you either love it or hate it. If you like quirky characters, and serious plotlines that somehow end up not taking themselves too seriously (if that makes any sense all), then you'll like Soul Hunter. _________________

Try Soul Hunter, or Houshin Engi as it's known in Japan. It's based on an old Chinese story, just like Suikoden. The main characters themselves aren't directly involved in a war (not until later in the story, anyway), but there is a lot of political kind of stuff going on behind the scenes. Corrupt emperor, peasant revolts, betrayal...that kind of thing.
You should be able to find the discs for quite a low price. It's a 26-episode series, licensed by ADV, and it's been out for quite a while, now. |
Ah! I love Housin Engi! That's one series I really, really wish they'd bring the manga over here for. I've seen the anime and started reading some fan-translations of the manga and really, really want to read more.
I did get a very Suikoden-like feel from this, once you look past Taikobo's antics... and the floating hippo. XD _________________

Well, Soul Hunter came in the mail today and I watched the first two episodes. So far, it's...interesting. I dunno, it seems too funny and doesn't really take anything seriously. I'll have to get farther before I decide whether I like it or not though...
Can you buy Housin Engi dubbed? And if so, where could I get it cheap? _________________

Houshin Engi is the Japanese name of Soul Hunter.
Anyway. Yeah, it does seem like a comedy at first, but later it does get into the deep political intrigue and all that. The stuff involving Lord Ki Shou, and Bunchu, and those other guys whose names elude me. _________________

I don't think there is that many anime that is similar to Suikoden and I don't think there ever will be... Suikoden is much to complex to ever be made into an anime form although they did do a pretty good job on the manga for Suikoden 3. _________________ "Do you earnestly believe you can defeat me?"

I'd like to second the mentions of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Twelve Kingdoms.
I frequently describe LoGH as "Suikoden in Space," because it pretty much is. It's fansubbed, and you can find torrents at animesuki.
I highly recommend Twelve Kingdoms, but note that you need to watch at least six episodes for it to become good. It's not so great during the first four or five episodes - it seems like it's going to be the standard "highschool girl gets sucked into another world and is Destined to Do Stuff." Said girl is weepy and shallow, but over the next few episodes she undergoes phenominal development, and has now become one of my favorite anime characters.
The most Suikoden-like moments are the end of the first story arc, and then the third and fourth story arcs. I think its best moments are the third story arc, because there're revolutionaries and townsfolk who are too afraid to rebel against cruel lords and plotting advisors to a queen who's trying hard not to be a puppet. |

I was interested in Utawarerumono...I looked it up on google and i found a web site called Utawarerumono.net and clicked where it said About Utawarerumono and this is what it said
To quickly summarize, Utawarerumono is a story about a man who wakes up in an village without memory of who he is. Thankful to the people taking care of him, he decides to help them. Due to a particularly cruel landlord, he leads the people of the village to an uprising, which ends up spreading to the rest of the world.
The game itself is an S-RPG (Strategy Role Playing Game) hentai game, meaning that the game is pornographic to some extent, mostly occuring in the latter 1/3 of the game. Comparitively, the game is considered to be epic in length, with the hentai at almost a bare minimum for successful completion of missions later in the game.

Don't worry, the show is not hentai at all. And it really is like Suikoden. It's a bunch of seemingly random people who band together and fight their corruptive government. I just saw episode 9 yesterday, and in it they fought of an empire who was trying to take over their new country. The main character is very Suikoden-like himself. He uses an unusual weapon (a metal fan--very cool!), and is an excellent strategist (really great strategy in eppy 9). I highly suggest it to anyone who hasn't watched it yet!
And I'm glad Soul Hunter gets better. I'll go start watching it again. Does it remain humerous throughout the whole series, or does the humor tone down at all? I hope it does tone down. I like humor, but not so much that the story isn't serious at all! _________________

Hmmm. We have an anime which is called Soul Hunters as well. Except with that S at the end. This anime seems nice. I'll try and look ofr a copy of this, if you say it's as Suikoden-like than most other anime. Looking good from the trailer alone, actually... _________________

Well I'm up to episode 10 in Soul Hunter, and I'm actually really enjoying it now! There are a ton of characters, and it's really getting political now.
EDIT: Has anybody watched Cluster Edge? I found it while browsing, and it looks kind of interesting. I haven't watched any of it yet though. _________________

I've just finished EP3. It's getting better by the moment. Apparently, Episode 10 is the latest to be shown in Japan. June 5 was the last screening. It seems to be shown every week. This is actually a pretty good Suikoden-like anime though. I think i REALLY need to get this. Thanks for the info! ^^ _________________
