Giant Squid

Well congratulations to those scientists who captured that image of the first ever live giant squid. It's something I've been wanting to see for quite a while, seeing some of the scars that they put on whales. I wouldn't be surprised if there was one with 150 foot tenticles trailing behind it somewhere, after all, no one really knows anything about them or where they come from.

Well we do know some things.

Apparently they hate having sex, at least the females do. The male giant squid has to basically fight the female in a tangle of arms and tentacles. He then has to work his penis (which is as long as his body) to one of her arms and "spread his seed" to it. However the female isn't too keen on having sex and will actually try biting his reproductive organ off with her beak...hence the reason the male giant squid fends her off and keeps her busy with this arms and tentacles.

Sometimes in this confusion the male may actually "inject" himself into one of his own arms by mistake. This eventually leads to his death. It is also speculated that male giant squids will attempt sex with each other (for whatever reason) and end up killing each other as a result.

The news of the giant squid photos made me one happy cephalopod geek. Yes, I love cephalopods. I don't know why. Maybe because they're so cute? *hugs Abizboah* Or maybe because they command me to like them? *hugs Cthulu*
