PostPosted: Fri Jul 08, 2005 9:26 pm    Post subject: Breath of Fire 1,2,3 Summary (MAJOR spoilers) Reply with quote Add User to Ignore List

I'm writing this here for Kalidor and for anyone else who wants to read the events and details surrounding the first three breath of fire storylines. I'm sure there are more BoF fans here, and if not, surely there may be people interested in the older games. If you don't want to spoil yourself and read everything, just let me state that Breath of Fire is a very good rpg series out there that is usually pushed aside due to major names like big bad Final Fantasy and the like. Breath of Fire came out more than 10 years ago, and to this day, the 5 games remain very generic, very old school (well not the fifth maybe) and very...engrish. But despite that, Breath of Fire is not a series to be overlooked, and is usually included as a series that many fans look back on in fondness. It has little to present in terms of new material (although, I'm sure that can be argued) but its plot has fascinated me to this day, so much that I bugged a friend to write up everything that happened in BoF 1, 2 and 3 (which all take place in the same world). Breath of Fire 4 remains unplayed by me, to this day, as is Dragon Quater. As far as I know, those games are seperate from the previous three.

Anyway, away I go! Keep in mind that I am going to be talking about dragons dragons dragons and will spoil all three games. Read at your own discretion. I hope you liked my quick little review, too :P

Okay. Here is the nice summary.

Correct=False Names
Deis=Bleu
Myria=Tyr
Wyndia=Windia, Winlan.
Woren=Fullen

“Whenever the world is threatened, a brave dragon of light will emerge from the flames and vanquish evil wherever it may lay. That is the legend of the Brave Man of The Dragon, The Destined Child”

In ancient times, the Dragon Clan “Brood” governed the land and forged a mighty empire all over the world, using both their magical skills granted by their God Ladon as well as their incredibly advanced technological discoveries. Amongst their greatest achievements was the construction of the floating fortress “Obelisk”. This is what Momo calls the Techno-Age in BoF3.

However, fratricidal wars surged amongst the different factions of the Brood, resulting in an all-open war which wiped out most of the clan and completely destroyed their empire, leaving only scarce shrines and ruins scattered around the world. The only two factions that survived the battle were the highly powerful Black Dragons and the pacifist Light Dragons.

Thanks to the peace granted by the disappearance of the dragon empire, most of the other clans were allowed to flourish.

The Dog Clan “Grassrunners” (Crafted for hunting and spell casting.)

The Cat Clan “Woren” (Specialized in melee fighting)

The Fish Clan “Manillo” (Masters of commerce)

The Bird Clan “Fae” (Have the power to transform into giant birds when grown up)

The Monkey Clan “High Landers” (Highly militaristic)

The Frog Clan (They… uhm… cook?)

The Bull clan (Forgers)

The Armadillo Clan (Farmers)

The Human Clan (Which is always quite irrelevant).

This is how things are at the beginning of BoF1

The rest of the events can be summarized:
Ryu meets a very young Nina Wyndia of the Fae, princess of the homonymous country.
Ryu meets Bo of the Grassrunner clan.
Seems the Grassrunners and the Woren are living together, although they don’t get along all that well. Cats and Dogs, go figure.
Ryu receives several powers from the Dragon God Ladon. Oh, and he’s also the Destined Child from the legend, surprise.
Ryu meets the thief Karn (The only Human party member in the entire saga up to 4)
Ryu meets Deis the Demigoddess (Who is really irrelevant)
Ryu meets Gobi (A Manillo), some guy from the Bull clan whose name I forgot and Mogu The Mole (Who is also irrelevant but horribly cute).
Nina falls into a time hole pulling a very complicated time-pharadox thingie that ends up with her being grown-up, which ultimately means she can use the power of the Great Bird and that Ryu isn’t a pedophile for shacking up with a minor.
Zog revives Obelisk
Ryu fights Zog. Ryu kicks ass.
Zog’s hechman, Jade, betrayed his lord. Lots of fighting and irrelevant stuff happen ending with Jade and Sara dead and with Myria free and happy.
Obelisk crashes around the Drogen area and buries itself.
Ryu fights Myria and uses the ultimate Brood power “Infinity” (Agni) to kick her ass.
They all go back home and the legend of the “8 Brave Warriors” is born. They are all alive and happy.
Ryu (Guessing from what you see in BoF2) marries Nina. This is good for them, but it screws the Fae heavily.
This is all up to BoF1.

Thousands of years after the events in BoF1, the world has changed quite a lot. Here are the major facts:

Humans are the predominant race. Most the other clans are almost extinct.
Grassrunners and Woren are brutally rare.
Armadillo and Bulls live in small villages.
The Manillo live underwater, so they don’t give a fuck.
The three major non-human clans are the Frogs to the northwest, the Fae to the north and the Highlanders to the southeast.
The Fae have long lost the power of the Great Bird (More on this later)
The Brood are no more than just a myth. Almost no one remembers the legend of the 8 Warriors.
The Human God, Saint Evans becomes the most popular religion. All the other divinities (Especially Ladon) are almost forgotten by humans.

The game starts in Gate, with the young Ryu Bateson, his sister Yua, his father, a St.Eva priest/sorcerer called Ganer and his mother, a woman with strange bat-like golden wings.

A few years back, the town of Gate was attacked by a large demon called Barubary. Ganer fought bravely against him, but to no use. When they were almost defeated, a giant Light dragon appeared and drove off the monster.

The Dragon set himself to sleep on the mountain. Ryu’s mother Valerie disappeared leaving only the Dragon Tear, a jewel that shows peoples emotions.

I could start summarizing the events, but they are not as shallow as before, so I’ll do this more precisely:
Ryu falls asleep near the Dragon one day. When he returns to the village, his sister and father are gone and no one remembers him. Very confused, he sleeps in his own house as an orphan and meets the wandering thief Boche Doggy (Bow) of the Grassrunner.
Ryu and Bow escape Gate and get into a cavern. There they see the Horror Demon Barubary.
Barubary soon disposes of Bow and confronts Ryu. The demon leaves him nearly killed and frightened, but tells him some cryptic words about a “Gate” and “God”.
Around eight years go by. Ryu and Bow are now fourth-rate rangers in the town of Hometown (Couldn’t come up with a decent name?). In a mission, they both find an abandoned village in the south. If you compare maps, that’s about the same location Drogen was in (Duhn-duhn-duhn).
Bow is framed by a mysterious thief: A girl with Bat-like wings and dark blue hair. Ryu sets off on a journey to capture her and clean up Bow’s name.
Ryu meets Rinpoo Chuan (Katt) of Woren and Rand Banks from the Armadillo. They fight a demon disguised as a human.
Ryu and Katt rescue a black-winged Fae (Nina) and her sister Princess Mina. They fight ANOTHER demon disguised as a human.
They find out that Nina has the mark of the “Black Wing” which is said to be the doom of the Fae. That’s why she was cast out of the castle as a child. The legend of the Black Wing is completely bogus by the way.
They meet the street magician Sten Legacy and around here find out about the existence of a prominent priest of St.Eva: Father Ray.
In a failed attempt to score with the Fire Shaman Sanamo, Ryu awakens the sleeping Power of The Dragon (Not as good as the lay, but it’s something)
Oh yeah, they start building a town too.
The whole mess with Nimufu, Jean and the frog clan happens. Ryu gets new powers. They fight a demon disguised as a Frog.
They (finally) catch the Phantom Thief Patty and clear up Bow’s name.
They guy who accused Bow of stealing, Trout, turns out to be a demon. Slash, shot, bang.
The gang finally realizes that there seem to be way too many demons around. At the same time, a giant demon is sighted near Gate. Bow and Ryu pee their pants.
They meet Deis, who is still quite irrelevant and follows Ryu because she thinks he’s cute and doesn’t have anything better to do.
The team goes off to find a grassman (Do not mistake for Grassrunner) that can tell them what the heck’s going on. Said grassman is the androgynous, get this shit, Aspara-Gus (Spar). C’mon guys, Asparagus?
Several quests occur. The most relevant being the High Fort one, in which they find out Sten is actually an old army general who’s in love with his princess.
A demon disguised as a Highlander tried to emulate Obelisk’s power in Highfort. He fails.
During the quest they also find the demon that caused everyone to forget about Ryu in Gate and they hear of the legend of the 8 Warriors.
The mess in Farmtown with Rand’s mother occurs. Something stinks in the church.
The most relevant quest in the game occurs: The Great Bird Quest. Nina is apparently the great-great-daughter of Nina and Ryu from BoF1. Nina1’s marriage was what caused the downfall of the Great Bird. Also, some BoF2 Ryu/Nina fluff.
Ryu2 doesn’t seem to be a blood relative from Ryu1.
They go to the Great church of Evrai. They escape from the Great Church of Evrai.
The “Resistance" plot happens. The Tiga fight made me use most of my best healing items before I realized you can’t win. Fucking cat.
Patty The Phantom Thief seems to be really crappy at her job.
More resistance stuff, St.Eva is clearly EvOl. Ryu/Katt fluff.
The small army attacks Evrai. They fail miserably.
Ray is a Black Dragon OMG! Rumor is that he’s Zog’s descendant (Since they are both blonde from the same clan).
Ryu’s Ultimate Innate “Kaiser” (G.Dragon) power awakens.
Ryu rescues his father (You didn’t kill him, did you?).
Ryu fires up the dormant Obelisk under his town. It’s almost completely useless now though.
Gate segment happens. The big dragon was Ryu’s mother, Valerie, and Patty is actually Yua. Also, High Priest/Demon Habakuru dies.
Ryu and Co. enter Infinity and arrive at Dologany. The Dragons were not extinct!
St.Evans is actually Deathevans, a demon left behind by Myria in order to destroy the Brood. It got out of control and decided to destroy all life-forms.
Ryu gains the Ultimate power of the Brood: Infinity (Anfini) AGAIN, FIFTH POST.
Ryu faces his childhood terror: Barubary (Unless you were a pussy and made them all fight together). Ryu wins and is muy macho.
The party faces Deathevans. Ryu is the only one who survives.
Half-dead Ryu summons Infinity and revives his companions. They destroy Deathevans.
Two possible endings, both equally irrelevant to the continuity as you never hear another word from any BoF2 character. Ever.

Lots of years after BoF2, the Brood seem to have gotten out of their cave-city and tried to destroy the world. However, God vanquished them and they are no more than fossils now.

New facts:
The world seems smaller.
Almost all the population is human.
The Fae are the only large clan remaining, and they have lost their powers completely (Not even wings now).
Dragon fossils are used as an energy source.

Here we go:
During a mining expedition, a pair of poor sods crack open what they thought to be a fossil. It was actually a quite alive dragon egg. Dragon gets out and starts to set people on fire for the heck of it. He is stopped by a mysterious voice and is captured by the miners.
While he was being sent to… somewhere, the baby dragon escapes and transforms into a human-looking kid. Said kid (Ryu) is found by the Woren Thief Rei. Doesn’t that just beat all?
Teepo is introduced. Rei seems to be hiding some special skill.
Mc Neil quest happens.
Rei’s house is attacked by the Mr. Ed wannabes Balio And Sunder. Rei and Teepo supposedly die. Ryu escapes.
The horses catch up to him and try to kill him. Ryu turns into a dragon but is too weak to fight. The horses decide to sell him in Wyndia as a “dangerous creature”
Pretty funny scene in Wyndia castle which reminds me of that singing frog from Warner. You know, the one that went Hello-my-baby-Hello-my-Darling… okay I’ll go on….
Little princess Nina tries to free Ryu. Dumb princess Nina is captured by Balio and Sunder.
Ryu turns into a dragon and a fight ensues. I don’t remember the outcome but you end up on the run either way.
You try to escape and meet the Grassrunner scientist Momo. Ryu gains more Dragon Powers. Nina does her damsel-in-distress routine like a thousand times.
”Enhanced crops” part 1. Peco the onion joins the party.
You get captured again.
The Tournament plot ensues. Ryu beats everyone (Including the scammer Emitai) until you fight the strange gladiator Garr. Garr pwns Ryu.
Garr decides to free Ryu and Co in exchange for letting him join the party. They agree (Duh, he’s HUGE!).
Balio And Sunder turn out to have demonic powers. You kill them.
Ryu and Co agree to go with Garr to Angel tower.
Pit Stop at Wyndia to get a passport. Nina’s parents are too big for their britches.
Looooooots of stuff happen including the faeries, training a bookworm and plenty of child porn romance. They finally drag their asses to Angel Tower.
Garr and other three guardians were the ones who eliminated the Brood under the order of their Goddess. However, since the Brood never attempted to fight back, Garr has his doubts on who’s the real evil. He tries to fight Ryu to somewhat reach some kind of epiphany.
Ryu loses, but sort-of awakens the Kaiser Dragon and escapes. He goes to sleep for several years inside the mine where he was born.
Garr finds him and decides to travel to where his Goddess lives to find the truth. Ryu gets dressed (He’s a big boy now).
First Ryu without a ponytail. Is that haircut physically possible?
Ryu fights an angered Brood spirit. He is also blessed by the soul of a kind Brood Woman (His mommy I guess).
Ryu hears about a rampant Weretiger. Ryu fights said Weretiger.
Ryu meets grown-up Nina. She has veeeery small and useless wings.
Ryu and Co finally discover the truth about the Weretiger: it’s Rei in his berserker form. They all defeat another demon and wonder why there are people with powers like that. Ah, Rei rejoins and kicks much butt.
Momo and Peco rejoin. “Enhanced Crops” Part 2. Some foreshadowing involving the God Tree Yggdrassil (How the heck do you pronounce that anyway?).
Nina’s parents are still morons. The party discovers the wondrous teleporters.
More traveling crap. You are in charge of the faerie village now, by the way.
Back at Angel Tower, it seems like Garr can’t reach his Goddess so we are going to try to free Deis, who was sealed for opposing the Goddess.
To free Deis, we need a second Guardian called Geist.
Geist, like Garr, doubted the Goddess. However, he deserted completely from the Guardians and was damned. He forces Ryu to fight him in order to free Deis.
Ryu wins, Geist dies (Happily).
Deis is free, still irresponsible and shamelessly naked. Ryu gets a good sight.
Deis is finally slightly relevant. She tells Ryu to cross the ocean and becomes a pretty kickass master (Although she doesn’t join. Bummer).
Failed ocean-crossing quests. Rei and Momo start bitching at each other.
The party hijacks a ghost and highly-computerized submarine.
They finally get to the other side and find a town of lifeless drone-like humans. Ryu fishes and gets the Royal Sword and Armor. They proceed to the ruins.
They fix the teleporter… and are sent back home. Oh, crap.
They finally managed to make it work and arrive in Dragnier, the forgotten Brood village (No, they are not extinct here either).
Okay, they might be extinct after all because they all gave away their powers and are now as common humans. They are also very bitter.
The party faces the Wise Man of The Dragon and the game’s most unfair fight.
Ryu gets the Kaiser power.
Desert of Death. Hot. Dork gave me the wrong directions. Rei and Momo bitch a little more.
Nina has a heat stroke. Ryu certainly has guts (And a Gamfaqs guide since I went trough the desert TWELVE TIMES).
Oasis stuff, Ryu gets the Ultimate Brood Power: Infinity (Ultimate Kaiser).
Caer Xhan. Myria station. I was expecting to see FATE and Lynx pop up around here.
Teepo is alive. Teepo is a Brood. Teepo is brainwashed and your enemy. Teepo is no longer alive.
Garr’s goddess is actually Myria. It seems like she finally got her wish of seeing the Brood dead and then used the old Dragon Technology to manipulate the world with her as the constant babysitter. All this to protect life from what she considered a menace and the slow degeneration of the world. So she’s not ALL evil, just rash.
Ryu and Co decide that the world should be left alone to take it’s course. And after crossing that damn desert, I’ll be damned if some blonde angel chick tells me otherwise.
Peco is actually the God Tree Yggdrassil (Okay, that’s one I didn’t see coming).
Myria transforms. Damn she’s ugly.
Ryu fights and uses his shiny Ultimate Kaiser/Infinity form. Myria is defeated.
Deis is actually Myria’s sister and tells her that it’s time for her to stop meddling with the world.
Ryu and Co awake in the middle of the desert getting ready to reconstruct the world. Peco plants himself in the sand as to signal the beginning of the planet resurrection. Kewl.

Whew! There. All pretty interesting, huh? As anyone can see, not the most original concepts and ideas here, but everything seems to fit nicely in together. I think it's cool to note that when you play Breath of Fire 1 and 2, you have NO idea what's going on. Hardly anything is explained to you, you just go off on a nice adventure and meet a bunch of people and get involved in things that are important. Breath of Fire 3 really brought up the rear and attempt to rectify all of this (and succeeded, I think). Either way, you have to play the games in order to appreciate the storyline, methinks. So much happens and I loooove it. (Next challenge- attempt to dissect Silent Hill!)

edit: oh and disregard the yeehaws >> I didn't realize that he swore so much

No prob. As I said before, it helps to have a summary if you do intend to someday play BoF1 and 2, because you don't know what's going on. The explanations are few and far between (and very weak).

Yeah, I'm a big BoF fan (4 rawked, btw), and I didn't know that Nina2 is actually Ryu/Nina1's ancestor, but it kinda makes sense now...thinning of the bloodline and all that jazz. I never actually beat either BoF1 or 2, because I couldn't use the last powers when I was supposed to... (and in 2, i got totally frozen and couldn't break free T.T)

I own the whole series, but 3 and 4 are the only ones that I've actually 'beaten', as in Dragon Quarter (biggest. misleading. title. ever.) it's wierd, and you have to 'lose' and 'reuse' your character multiple times in order to beat it...story's kinda wierd too, but it still looks amazing...if you enjoy semi-cell shading, that is.

BoF III is definately my favorite because of the Dragon Gene system. It gives you so much versitility, and the skill system went well with it. My main party was Ryu (Berserk Kaiser, cause he's a BEAST! O.O), Rei, and Nina (with the Influence command, naturally :3) I'd just transform Ryu and Rei, and let Nina sit back and throw out an influence every once in a while to keep Ryu and Rei from stomping each other into oblivion. >:3

Ah BoF, it was the first RPG I remember ever playing. It is what got me hooked on RPGs. I love them.

I think that you forgot to include the backstory of Myria towards the begining of the timeline thing. I think that was revealed in the first BoF at least some what. However I can't really remember what it was since it has been a while since I played it. I think she had something to do with the Dragon Clans fighting among themselves or something like that.

Quote:

Ryu meets the thief Karn (The only Human party member in the entire saga up to 4)

I don't know if he is really human. He is the only non-anthro character besides Ryu. However he is able to fuse into really cool things like the duck dragon Puka(who is obscenely powerful). So if Ryu isn't human because he transforms into dragons, I would think Karn isn't human because he fuses(yeah I'm being nitty picky here). Also I don't think any humans join you at any point in the series(I can't remember for sure with 4 though).

Quote:

Ryu (Guessing from what you see in BoF2) marries Nina.

If I remember what I read a while ago correctly, there is a manga that shows their marriage and also their son(who I forgot the name of).

Quote:

Breath of Fire 3 really brought up the rear and attempt to rectify all of this (and succeeded, I think).

Really? It seemed to me that the storyline in three was the weakest in the story department. I understood everything that happened in one and two, but in three i seemed to only barely follow it.

Also I think that both four and five can fit into the the timeline of the other BoFs(I know you ahven't played them). Four explains how the first dragons arrive in the world(although it doesn't explain how the dragon clans arrive). While five could(it is the least likely in my mind to fit in) take place after the entire world has erroded after four. If you were to put all of them together you can get a fairly nice story except for there is a rather large hole in the timeline between four and one. This leads me to believe there was supposed to be another one taking place in that time slot that was never made(four has a lot of loose ends).

Yeah you're right, I was reading everything over and thought that I had missed that.

The Goddess of Desire Myria (Tyr) decided to play a morbid reality show as a apart of her plan to eliminate the Brood (Who she thought to be the “great devils of destruction” based on what triggred the destruction of the Techno-Age).

She promised power and immortality to whomever could collect the (How many where they?) Keys of The Goddess. Obviously, nobody even dared to go against the Brood on a militaristic conflict, so the battle was pretty much between the Black Dragons and the Light Dragons, although the latter showed no interest in fighting (Especially since there was only a small bunch of the left against the whole Black Dragon army).

The Black Dragons commence an unchallenged conquest of the whole world.

Still, just in case, the Black dragon emperor Zog commanded an attack on Drogen (The Light dragon village) to capture the only remotely dangerous member of the faction: The Dragon Maiden Sara, which they did without much problem leaving Sara’s little brother Ryu quite enraged. Ryu, seeing the impotence of his faction, decides to journey to the enemy city to rescue Sara. Nobody believes much in him, but they give him his blessings anyway.

There. How silly of me ;P

But Karn doesn't change, he fuses...like he wasn't born half dragon or something. You're could be totally right, but this wasn't touched on at all, so I would assume that it's just an ancient power coarsing through his blood. But who knows?

Really that's weird...haha. Different perspectives I guess.

4 and 5 were not the same world. They were completely new and different environments. 4 is set in a similar world, but the Brood don't exist.

Well you can really make an argument either way. It depends on where you draw the line between being human and being something else. The entire empire that he was from had the special power(I think) to fuse. However he was the last of his kind, so it doesn't really matter. Although I do believe he lived all the way until BoF2(although that might have been a fan service thing).

I really got the impression that 4 was supposed to be in the same world(keep in mind I haven't played either in a while). It seemed to me that it was connected directly because it had Dies in it and explained who she was in a sense. It just always seemed naturally to me that the two were connected.

As for 5 I didn't think they were connected until I was reading your summary because I forgot that the world was degenerating, and five takes place in a world where the people were forced to retreat underground for similar reasons. However I there might have been something in one of those two games to discount that(three and five were my least favorites so I remember them the least).

Wait, didn't 4 have Rei and Teepo in it ? They were located in a secret shop, weren't they? But for 5, i'm pretty sure the world was different. Anyway, thanks for clearing up the story as i have only played halfway through 1 and 3.

Rei and Teepo must have been recycled characters (as you indicated in a "secret" shop) only there for nostalgia. Karn and Bo were in BoF2, but not officially, since it's impossible for them to live hundreds or thousands of years. They were in the little shack on the island with the huge slimes and gongheads (or whatever they were)

Also there's no way it would have been the same world, since I'm assuming, the geography and history is completely different...

Well we really don't know much about Karn's race except that there are four old guys that are a part of it, but yeah now I'm just just trying to validate a point I know is wrong. So yeah you are right they were just there for fan service(or something).

Quote:

Also there's no way it would have been the same world, since I'm assuming, the geography and history is completely different...

About all we know about the history of the world of five is that the world went barren, so they had to go underground. Then the geography is solely underground tunnels that were made for the purpose of hiding underground from impending doom. So we can't use either history or geography to disqualify it(at least as far as I can remember).

For 4, if it were to fit into the world of the first three games would be before the history from one that we know of. I suppose that could be used to disqualify it, but I maintain that Dies creates the connection. However that is sort of weak. Also I don't remember how the geography compares to the other games. So it is sort of up in the air.

Well I have all five games haven't finish II yet and I haven't started V, but the best of the lot I have to say its III, as for story connections I really don't care when it comes to Breath Of Fire, but they are a bit overlooked, when IV got a European release I was happy, but I was surprised when the end credits were still in Japanese, I mean the translated the whole game they didn't have the time to do the credits, how cheap, they figured that nobody reads the credits anyway why should we bother.

But the whole Nina and Ryu is getting old, come one five games and still those 2 I want change, and the Dragon system of III, but I'm still looking in any probable sequels I'm not exactly a fan but III was more than an interesting RPG, and how about Momo appearing as an instructor (the right word evades me) in IV how is that explained story wise?

Yeah that sums up the entire three games pretty well as I have also played and beaten all three games at least twice each. Sadly I dont have any of them anymore because my brother had the bright idea to sell them off and not give me any of the money. This, after I bought them in the first place, so you can imagine I wasnt very happy with that.

To be frank I do currently own both Breath of Fire 4 and 5. Number four is actually in my opinion better then Breath of Fire 3 because it tried something a bit different. Im not going into the story right now because that would take too long and I dont remember it off hand anyway. I can say it was a good game and anyone who likes the series and can find the game (ha good luck)should pick it up.

There are few games that I own or other wise that I can truly say I despise but Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter is the bane of my existence. There are few games that have annoyed me to the point where I refuse to play them. The only reason I even still have this game is for collection purposes. The gameplay mechanics are shoddy, the dragon concept is stupid, and the story at best would rate a 4/10. this on top of the fact that the characters to the point of where I am dont have much personality does not endear me to continue. I would not recommend this to anyone who isnt out of their minds. Then again some people might like that so strike that last comment.

But I gather that there's absolutely no evidence in those games to hint that they are the same world. I'm not sure, though. Anyway, I'll post the BoF4 explanation and then maybe we can all pick through it and see what adds up to continuity, and what doesn't.

"Now, with the exclusion of V which I have yet to play, BoFIV is by the far the most continuity-f'ing game of the series. I’ll only give you the summary and I’ll explain what this all means later. Also, I apologize if the Fou-Lu sequences are timed off, it’s been a while since I played. Their timing isn’t very relevant since the only points in which they interact are the Astral/Aura and Tyrant/Kaiser awakenings.

The game is set in another world with in similar qualities as the BoF1 world, except that the Brood don’t exist. Here’s a basic rundown:

The clans are all rather numerous and there are no prominent racial disputes.
The humans are still the most numerous, but not by all that much.
The present clans are: Manillo, Fae, Woren, Grassrunner, Frog, Kitsune (New clan) and human.
The Fae have wings, but no Great Bird power. (Like in BoF2).
The world lives under the protection of the god-like dragons Endless.
The world is politically split in two. On one side you have the Fou Empire and on the other you have the Alliance (With most of the clans and “friendly” cities). They have taken turns to make war to each other for centuries; nobody even remembers why they fight anymore.
The Empire developed a magical weapon called the Carronade or Hex-Cannon. It uses the suffering of human sacrifices to lay waste upon huge areas.
The world is physically split by an ocean of mud (!?). There is a real water ocean on the north, though.

Heeere we go:
Princess Elina of Wyndia went missing in the border town of Synesta. Her younger sister Princess Nina and the Woren Chief Cray go on an unofficial (And unauthorized) mission to rescue her.
I suddenly realize that every game intro revolves around someone’s sister/adoptive brother gone missing.
Nina and Cray try to cross the desert in a Sandflier, but are attacked by an Endless (I refuse to acknowledge those things as dragons.) They need spare parts so Cray stays with the ship and Nina goes to the nearby town (Shouldn’t that be the other way around?)
In the way, Nina stumbles across a giant crater and sees a Dragon (That’s more like a dragonfly if you ask me). The beast disappears.
Nina meets a completely oblivious, apparently amnesiac and buck-naked Ryu. Ryu loots borrows some clothes from a merchant. Nina tries to help Ryu by taking him to the city, and gives him the King’s Sword (The Alliance symbol) so he’s not completely useless.
From this point onwards, Ryu is Nina’s bitch.
Ryu and Nina travel trough a canyon and Ryu does a fantastic head-dive into the rocky ground. Oucho. They decide to spend the night.
All the way on the other continent (Hesperia) the tomb of the age-old Endless Emperor Fou-Lu opens. Fou-Lu awakens from his slumber and I must say that he is a total Sephiroth ripoff with an annoying speech. Fou-Lu heads over to Imperial Capitol Chedo to reclaim his throne, sorta.
Seems Fou has a welcome committee of the non friendly type. His own servants, while very polite and respectful, have the order to kill him. Fou-Lu is actually a dragon with MAD SKILLZ and starts to slaughter his enemies like bugs.
Yohm the executioner (I might be mistaken with the name) summons a monster to kill Fou. Fou-Lu awakens the dragonfly-looking Astral Dragon Form. Needless to say that he wins.
The old executioner sets up a trap to weaken Fou-Lu by using fire (Since he is Water-aligned. Fifth post). Succeeds, but Fou manages to escape, though highly wounded.
Ryu and Nina wake up. Ryu can now turn into the Aura dragon. Nina doesn’t even notice for some odd reason.
They arrive to the town of Sarai and look for Sandflier parts. Ryu still has no memory. Lots of stuff until they end up in a bar.
Empire soldiers enter the bar saying that they are looking for a dragon. The spot the princess and try to… kidnap her? Doesn’t matter really, they fail.
Enraged for being beaten by a little girl, the enemy general (Rasso) insults Ryu. Ryu gets pissed and breaks the King Sword on his armor. It apparently hurt like hell and Ryu and Nina are forced to escape.
While fleeing, they arrive to a Hexed town. Trying to cross they meet Ershin, who remains quiet a mystery trough the first half of the game.
They cross the Hexed town and rejoin Cray. Ryu has a prophetic dream that tells them where Elina “might” be. Ershin says that it was thanks to the “Eye of The Dragon”.
The party heads to Synesta. They meet the Mud Endless and a woman who sings a song about the Endless. I don’t remember it correctly, but it was just foreshadowing.
It is now pretty clear that Ryu is a Dragon.
Around now, Fou-Lu recovers from his wounds thanks to a hermit lumberjack and tries to fly over to Chedo (He can do that now since more of his power is awakening). Fou is shot down by a monster summoned by Yohm.
Looots of traveling crap. They get to Synesta and find out Elina was taken to the Empire and that a resident merchant might be able to give them a ride over there.
They meet the Manillo merchant Marlok and his bodyguard Kahn. Ryu also beats Kahn for the first time.
Weird mingame crap. Confusing scene in which Nina may or may not have been raped by Marlok. They finally use an Empire teleporter (A magical one, not technological) to go over to the other continent. They also fight Rasso and cause a malfunction on the teleporter.
The party tries to infiltrate an Empire city and are captured by a Kitsune magician named Yuna. They are sent back to the Alliance capital city Ludia as prisoners.
The Alliance isn’t happy about several things like infiltration, violation of treaties and the “disappearance” of the King Sword. Cray is put in jail and trailed for execution.
Ryu and Co get a Grassrunner Ronin called Scias stuck on them for “protection”.
The party searches for Cray’s mom to ask her how to help his son. Faeries appear. A Desert of Death-esque scene ensues. I still don’t get what’s the deal with the gliding snail, since you can cross the plains on foot later on.
Cray’s mommy tells them to find the King’s Sword, but unfortunately Ryu already smashed it. The only option is forging a new one. They head over to a volcano.
Lots of questing stuff, you make a sword out of faerie shit. Back to Ludia.
It seems the Empire had the same idea as you, only faster. They gave the Alliance their fake sword in exchange for a big mass of territory. Ludia is not happy, Cray is royally fucked.
You break into the castle at night and rescue Cray. Scias doesn’t seem to mind arguing that his job was just to “Keep an eye on you”. The party escapes and heads north towards Wyndia.
Ryu gets conned into being the Faerie Mayor again.
You arrive on Wyndia. The king is relieved to see his daughter and tells you to go to a tower and talk with their guardian spirit, a Wind Endless with a Chinese name (Something-ryong).
Somewhere around here, Fou-Lu awakens in a farming village in Hesperia. A farmer with a different but equally exasperating speech disability called Mami has been taking care of him. She disguises Fou as her cousin Ryong.
Pseudo-Romance stuff ensues. Fou kicks monster butt, the people of the village get suspicious of his power.
Ryu does more questing and they arrive at the tower aerie. Scias betrays the Ludians in favor of your party and you take off flying on what could pass for an oversized kite.
The Wind Endless doesn’t really do much but foreshadowing, and he tells Ryu to go to the summoning place, a village called Chek. He also blows you over there (Not like that you perv).
Everyone in Chek is a child thanks to the magic of their summoning, their leader, the Abbess identifies Ryu as one half of the Yorae Dragon (Translation anyone?), the most powerful of the Endless. The other half being the ancient emperor Fou-Lu. He also explains that the Endless have a habit to draw people near like a vacuum and that those who get intertwined in the Endless’ fate also share it.
The Abbess also detects the aura of the Endless inside of Ershin. *You* go inside of Ershin and find the sealed Goddess. Yup, it’s Deis again. It seems that she was summoned to this world, but somebody screwed up and she doesn’t have a body. She’s not very happy either.
I’m not sure if they explain this to you, but “Ershin” means “Master”. So Ershin wasn’t talking about himself in this person, he was referring to Deis.
A medium offers her body to Deis. She is eager to oblige and Ershin becomes a useless scrap of metal.
Deis explains that before Ryu and Fou meet, they must get Ryu to be as powerful as the Emperor, so that he does not get absorbed by him.
The Party head to the summoning place to talk with the Endless. They do. Along the way, they are followed by the empty Ershin. It seems that some of Deis energy is still on him, allowing him to move. Deis orders him back to the village.
The imperial guards have found Fou-Lu. Mami sacrifices herself so he can escape. I still don’t get why he doesn’t morph and chew them, but oh well. Fou heads south.
The Endless tell Ryu that he must find their true form to gain their (Fairly useless) power. Ryu gets his first summoning skill.
Rasso attacks Chek and tries to kill the Abbess. Ershin uses his last energy to protect him.
Ryu comes back and finds the Abbess still alive inside of Ershin. You head to the north village to protect the refugees.
Along the way, you are captured by an empire general, a Kitsune called Ursula.
You are late and Rasso killed just about everyone. He summons another mechanical warrior for you to fight. The robot has a magic shield which makes him invincible.
Once Ryu is defeated, he awakens the Bahamut Xero Kaiser form and performs his best scene ever, going fucking berserk and incinerating both the robot AND general Rasso. Ryu gains ten coolness points.
Nina latches on to Ryu to stop his killing spree. He drops unconscious. From this point onwards, Ryu can transform into a berserk Kaiser and Fou-Lu can use his Tyrant.
Fou-Lu proceeds towards Chedo, but Yohm fires the Carronade on top of him using Mami as the sacrifice. Fou is gravely damaged and loses all his remaining faith in humanity.
Back in the village, Deis takes pity on the poor scrap of iron and goes back into Ershin’s core. Ershin re-joins, this time with magical powers (So Deis, kinda joins too).
Deis and the Abbess realize that for Ryu to control Kaiser, he must gain the power of all the Endless. They also con the captured Ursula into smuggling them into the Empire.
You start your journey back into Hesperia, this time you take the long road, as you smashed the teleporter.
You get a Sandflier. Best mini-game ever.
Lots, and I mean LOTS of traveling subplot stuff happens. None of it relevant. Ursula kinda starts to like the party. Ryu peeks on Nina and Ursusla while bathing and almost gets shot (This scene was censored in the American version).
You FINALLY arrive to southern Hesperia and Ryu should have gained all the Summons, allowing him to control Kaiser. It doesn’t ownz as much as the previous Kaisers, though.
Half-dead but royally pissed off Fou-Lu arrives to Chedo. It’s show time.
It seems like Fou-Lu left the care of the empire in the hands of a rich noble while he slept, with the promise of taking it back once he awoke. The current emperor didn’t feel like giving away his empire, so he ordered Fou killed. Dork.
Yuna gives the emperor the Dragonslayer sword, which supposedly can kill the Endless with one blow.
Fou’s completely awoken Tyrant form slaughters all resistance. Another of his guardian dogs goes off to lay waste on the city under his command.
The emperor tries to kill Fou-Lu but fails miserably. Fou snaps and decapitates him.
I should peel the skin off from whoever thought it was a good idea to censor that last scene, because it was fucking awesome.
Ryu and Co beat one of Fou’s guardian dogs and cross trough his tomb.
Going back and forth, the party finds Elina, Yuna, the Dragonslayer and kills Elina (That scene was so sad, especially since the fox escaped).
They arrive to Chedo. The city was completely devastated and Ursula’s adoptive father killed. Ryu defeats the other Guardian Dog and proceeds to the castle.
The final showdown occurs between the pseudo-brothers. Its seems like Fou has lost all faith in humankind and decided to annihilate them all
Two possible endings.
1# Ryu joins Fou-Lu and gets the Infinity form which you get to use against your own party (Wheee!), You kill them and Fou-Lu goes off to destroy the world.
2# Ryu fights Fou-Lu, Tyrant and an overly powered Astral and (After one of the hardest and longest boss battles I ever had) defeats him. Ryu absorbs Fou and transforms into the humanoid Infinity with blonde hair. Ryu banishes all the Endless back to their worlds including his own essence, remaining as a mere human. He also TALKS!
Fou-Lu rests in peace, Ryu goes back to his friends, Deis sticks around, Yuna is still alive and Nina probably keeps the ex-dragon chained to her leg for the rest of his life. The End. "

And this is what my friend posted afterwards in conclusion:

"“Endless”

Let me get this clear: Endless are NOT Gods and they are NOT dragons. As far as the game implies, any really powerful creature can be summoned to be an Endless, immortality is not even a requisite. Endless is a very… endless category.

Also, “God”, “Endless” and “Dragon” are used as synonyms. This is NOT correct. The only two certified Brood in the game are Ryu and Fou-Lu, I have my doubts about the summoned dragons, but Deis and Elina have NOTHING to do with the Brood.

“The Destined Child”

It’s pretty clear, for the first three games at least, the Destined Child is a god-sent Brood who has an enormous amount of power, higher than anybody else in the clan.

It would seem that they are not blood relatives of each other, but just appear at Ladon’s command upon the earth, with the same appearance and name each time (The Dragon God isn’t very original, methinks).

Each one of these children have the combined powers of all the Brood factions (Fire, Water, Thunder, Darkness, etc), an ultimate innate form (Kaiser) and the ultimate Brood Power (Infinity).

However, this concept is a bit compromised in BoF4. As I said before, the “Endless” are not really gods, just very powerful creatures with an extended longevity (It is stated that the Endless DO grow old, that’s why Fou-Lu had to put himself in stasis until Ryu appeared).

My take is that the Yorae Dragon is nothing more than the Destined Child, being Ryu and Fou-Lu it’s two halves. I’m basing this on the following facts

Together, they have all the elemental attributes (Ryu’s fire, Fou-Lu’s Water and the attributes they both share)
Separated, they can only go as high as their innate forms (Kaiser/Tyrant)
Ryu doesn’t have enough power to control Kaiser by himself, which makes him inferior to his predecessors (They were all fine with the Kaiser form).
You put the two together and you get the Infinity Dragon.

So in BoF4, you don’t control one of the Destined Children, just half of it.

“The Power of The Dragon”

There are (Or at least were before the first war) several different kinds of factions inside the Brood, separated by their elemental proprieties. That’s how you have Thunder Dragons, Fire Dragons, Water Dragons, Black Dragons, Light Dragons, etc.

As I stated, The Destined Child (Who I will refer to as simply Ryu because it’s easier) can use the powers of all the dragon factions regardless of his own bloodline (Ryu1 and Ryu2 are the only ones that clarify what faction they belong to). They have, however, two special forms:

Ultimate Innate “Kaiser”
Named as:
BoF1: Rudra
BoF2: G.Dragon
BoF3: Kaiser
BoF4: Kaiser/Tyrant

Kaiser is Ryu’s ultimate innate default form. By innate, I mean that it’s only HIS power (In opposition to Infinity, which is the power of the whole clan) and by default, I mean that it’s his “real” form as a Brood (All the other ones are powers granted by Ladon to the Destined Child). You could even go as far to say that Ryu is a one-man (or four-man) faction of the clan, as he is the only one of the Kaiser species.

Ultimate Brood “Infinity”
Named as:
BoF1: Agni
BoF2: Anfini
BoF3: Berserker Kaiser/Ultimate Kaiser
BoF4: Infinity

Infinity is the combined power of the Brood which is even greater than most of the gods (Hence it being summoned as an Endless). Ryu is the only one capable of using this power.

You could say that Ryu fights by himself when he uses Kaiser, but he gets handicap from his whole clan when he uses Infinity.

“Two Worlds”

As far as I can see, the world is the same from BoF1 to 3. Here are my fundaments:
The progressive disappearance of the clans, beginning in BoF1 to the human-majority of BoF3.
The Fae’s slow but constant degeneration beginning with Ryu1 banging Nina1.
Myria’s grudge against the Brood. Why would she move to another world if the race she hates is right there?
Dragon Empire/Techno Age ruins.
Deis says in BoF4 that she wants to return to her world. WORLD. Singular word.
The mural in Dragnier showing the 8 Warriors from the legend. How would they know about that if they were on another planet?
Ladon “appears” in the first three games, but not in the fourth (Which IS on another world)
It is clearly stated that Myria changed the world’s shape to protect it from being swallowed by the Desert of Death.
There are several other reasons, but I think that I made my point.

BoF4 however, is clearly set in another world, although I covered that on the previous post.

“Dragons”

This is just a list of the relevant Brood that appear in the four games, nothing special. I’m sorry but I forgot Ray’s last name (He had one, like all the BoF2 cast).

BoF1:
Ryu –Light Dragon-
Sara –Light Dragon-
Zog –Black Dragon-
Jade –Black Dragon-

BoF2:
Ryu Bateson –Light Dragon-
Yua/Patty Bateson –Light Dragon-
Valerie Bateson –Light Dragon-
Ray –Black Dragon-

BoF3
Ryu –Faction Unknown-
Teepo –Looks like a Black Dragon. Dunno-

BoF4:
Ryu –Faction Unknown. Fire-Aligned half-
Fou-Lu –Faction Unknown. Water-Aligned half-

I’m not sure about the summoned dragons from BoF4. They *do* give Ryu powers and stuff, but they don’t look like any other Dragon in the game, so they might just be random Endless from various races.

“Lookalikes”

I have little to no explanation for this. Ryu has an excuse for being in each game, but Nina is a different story. Nina2 is Nina1’s granddaughter, and Wyndia obviously is the same realm on the first three games, but I have no idea what excuse Nina3 has. Not even mention Wyndia and Nina4, which aren’t even on the same world. "

Sorry for the long post, guys!

Grrr I wish I could remember one event from 4 better. It occurs in the ending and it could make or break my theory about 4 being the same world. The scene is about this one doctor guy saying something along the lines that he can still summon the endless. Depending on the method for summoning endless/dragons my theory is either made or broken. To basically sum up my theory, after the events of 4 that guy summons a lot more dragons(like Ryu/Fou-Lu not the large endless). They either serve him or kill(doesn't matter in the long run). These dragons eventually form the dragon clans. Then the age where the brood rule comes about. Sometime during this time period Dies gets a new body and Myria is brought over also. Then we all know what happens after that. It seems to be a bit more of a stretch then it used to be to me. I am probably forgetting several details that relate to my theory unfortunatly. I need to replay all of them sometime.

Oh and I just remembered something. Wasn't it revealed in three that Dies and Myria were sisters or something? I might just be remembering things wrong, but I am pretty sure there was something like that.

Quote:

But I gather that there's absolutely no evidence in those games to hint that they are the same world. I'm not sure, though.

Well there is nothing that exclusively says that it is indeed the same world. However it is possible for them to be the same world. It really doesn't matter one bit because that game really wasn't that good. So I actually prefer not to think of it as the same world simply to keep the world pure.

Quote:

Each one of these children have the combined powers of all the Brood factions (Fire, Water, Thunder, Darkness, etc), an ultimate innate form (Kaiser) and the ultimate Brood Power (Infinity).

To expand this to five as well, the "chosen" in five only gets to control the power of a single dragon. Then there is only one other dragon in the game. Ryu is a fire(I think) dragon, and I have no idea what the other dragon is.

Quote:

BoF3
Ryu —Faction Unknown-

When you first control Ryu is three doesn't he start out as a flame pup or something like that? So can't it be said that he naturally is a flame dragon. Of course flame dragons should be extinct at this point. Oh well it doesn't really matter.

If Myria is brought over, then they must not be in the same world ;P

I'm not sure about that either. Maybe since he eventually gained all of the genes, then that doesn't mean that he's inherently one...?
