Wow, this is great news. I hope they can add more depth in the free roaming with a little less tedium in battles. _________________

How similar was Persona 3 to the other Persona games? I'm curious how similar this new Persona game will be to Persona 3. Will they somewhat similar in mechanics, or are each of the games pretty different in mechanics, and only sharing certain themes which tie them together? _________________

It wasn't very similar, in my opinion. In 2, you could buy (or find) cards that allowed you to grant spells to any and every persona. In 3, you kind of have to throw caution to the wind and wing a persona's spells through fusion. There were also several dungeons throughout the first two Persona games that were much "deeper" than those during the full moons in Persona 3. In this respect, it followed a much more traditional RPG formula. Still, the ability to choose which shadows you wanted to fight in Persona 3 was pretty awesome, even if you couldn't control the other characters in your party. Speaking of which, you can control five characters in the first two titles compared to four in Persona 3.
I guess what I am trying to say is that Persona 3 was completely revamped from the first two games and, even though 2 is one of my favorite RPG's, 3 was definitely amazing.
P.S. The music is better in the first two games. lol _________________

Differences between P3 and P1, P2: IS, and P2: EP:
No dark hour, so personae could be used at all times.
Character's stats were averaged between their own and the persona they had equipped.
You didn't need to shoot yourself in the head to summon personae.
You fought and could talk with demons.
You could use 5 characters.
You couldn't change weapon types. (Though in P1 each character had a gun and melee weapon.)
Personae could be used for non combat purposes. (example Toro/Chunky)
You were able to control all your characters.
Every character could equip multiple personae.
Personae were bestowed by Philemon and Igor was only his servant that helped summon them. He would also give you advice and help during the game.
Everyone could access the Velvet Room, and even before they became persona users people could hear the faint sounds of the room emanating from various places.
There was an extremely greedy fairy who helped restore your health while in dungeons named Trish. (She is in P3 if you check the TV though, she talks about various characters from the previous games on certain days.)
The Velvet Room was occupied by Igor, Belladonna, and a nameless piano player. (The Demon Artist was added to IS and EP.) No Elizabeth.
A certain villain was in all of them, though his appearance is brief in P1 and his name was changed in the American release.
*EDIT* We also lost all the cool chain stores in P3, I weep for you persona newbies that have never heard Satomi Tadashi item store song or enjoyed a burger at Peace Diner. :P
*EDIT2* All Personae could rank up 8 times and be returned to Igor for an item.
The fusion spell system sucks in P3, IS and EP gave you greater variety and better spells in general. P1 didn't have one though.
The persona summoning system was different in all versions of the game. IS and EP had the least annoying system, but in P3 you had way more control over what moves your Persona could learn.
I'll probably come back and edit this when I can recall some of the other differences. _________________

I forgot about that. You can also interact with all of these characters and they occasionally drop little tidbits of information.
Riding on the coattails of Loran, there is also a rumor system in Persona 2 that can affect the outcome of your gaming experience (better items, weapons, crazy enemies, etc.). Damn, Persona 2 kicks ass. _________________

Rumours include a TV show called "Mayonakano-terebi"(Midnight TV) that act as access to the dungeon, or the glasses are used to enter the dungeon instead of summoning. _________________

changes from P3:
1. No moon cycle. This is a very big change for SMT, because the moon cycles have been important in pretty much every one, right?
This, however, is GREAT for Persona 4 for a few reasons. This means that since things are entirely based on weather, things won't be as predictable as P3's moon system.
2. There's no Shadow Time. In one part they show the crew in a dungeon "after school", in one part they're there at "daytime" which was during summer break since it was during July 29. What does this mean for the formula? Will it be possible to skip school in P4?
3. There's more than one dungeon and they're all unique to each other. Here's hoping there's meat to them. I'm talkin, puzzles and TRAPS SMTN style. My buddy noticed an underground lab, a strip club, and a castle mansion.
4. Characters can now help each other up if they are knocked down.
5. You can now control more than just the main character. In one part of the trailer, I showed you in control of the red head dude. Either that was the red lights shining on the main's hair, or you can control them. _________________ She knows stuff. |

Thanks for the video. Good stuff!
I think the most interesting change, IMO, is if you actually are able to control other characters. That was one of the more interesting and sometimes frustrating things about P3, so I'm not sure how I really feel about it.
I posted this comment on another site, but I find it interesting and somewhat good that while there are definitely things that seem familiar and similar, that they've changed some things up.
Again...good stuff. _________________ I can run faster scared than you can mad. |
