I have been a huge fan of Creative Assembly's Total War franchise. I was with them conquering all of Japan during the Shogun: Total War era to conquering Europe, North Africa and the Mediterrenean with Medieval: Total War I-II right up to building my ancient empire during Rome: Total War. Each series in the franchise just upped the ante for the next entry to the franchise. It is now official that the next entry in the total War franchise is to be called Empire: Total War.
Still in development, Empire: Total War will be set around the imperial era of the 18th and 19th centuries when European nations began building a worldwide empire across the globe. It will include such important event as the Seven Years War, The Napoleonic Wars, The American Revolution right up to Barbary Coast Wars. For the first time it will include North America as a region to be fought over by the differing factions in the game.
It will have all the usual trapping of past Total War games like diplomacy, resource management, and empire-building. I'm assuming archer and crossbow based units will be replaced by ranks upon ranks of rifle units who may also act as swordmen and spearmen due to bayonet charges. Cavalry units and charges will still be in the game. More types of gunpowder artillery units will be made available.
there will be several new additions to the battle system. One addition will be the ability to garrison men inside building and not just have them milling about in plazas and courtyards inside the fortress waiting for the enemy to breach the walls. Players can also designate one specific general as their army commander who would attract all units not needed to protect regions to him. I'm guessing this means the task of constantly building units then moving them from one region to another until they join up with the right commander will be a thing of the past.
The biggest addition to the battle system will be the addition of an expanded, real-time naval battle using large ships-of-the-line and escort ships full of naval crewmen and marines. Players wil be able to control up the the maximum amount of 20 ships. Each ship will act like a regiment unit on land-based armies with each ship having a certain amount of crewmen and marines to represent the size of the unit.
There's no set date as to the release of this game, but I hope it makes an appearance sometime next year or, at the very least early 09 at the latest. I also hope this new addition to the series means a Total War based on the battles of early modern warfare (US Civil War, Crimean War, etc...) right up to the granddadies of them all, World War I and II, will become a reality. _________________

I'm really surprised that there's not many developers studios of RTS games are using the Total War engine to really make their RTS games go splodey. I mean the Dawn of War games using the Total War engine. That's like manna from heaven combined with crack. I would sacrifice thousands of skulls to the Blood God for such a game. _________________

I don't know about WWI and WWII though... In some respects it has been done many times over. That and one of the great things about Total War for me at least was the older feel to the games; the ancient battles being recreated.... I just don't know if the newer ones would be as fun. That said, I'd buy it first day, play it and probably still love it.
Anyway, great news for all TW fans. I really like the idea of garrissoning units inside buildings. It will make sieges and attacking a lot harder. _________________ ______ "We're still flying"

To tell you the truth Im not as interested in that period historically but Im a huge, huge, huge fan of the Total War series and Im gonna buy this one regardless. Shogun: Total War remains my favourite even today, so I hope they do a remake of that one eventually or maybe a follow up on that period like they did with Medieval: Total War II.
Its gonna be awesome by the sounds of it. _________________

Here are some screenshots of the Naval Battles:
Heh. I'll definitely need to upgrade my PC sometime.
I'm quite looking forward to this. Like most here, I've been playing the Total War games for years, and it's great to see it's going into this era in history. _________________
