It actually makes no difference what the length of your password is especially if the hackers are doing a key logger of your computer. If your computer is compromised, it makes no difference how complicated your password is. It is very easy to get into someone's computer and get any information you want-- hence how they even got addresses and phone numbers.

Oh, hmmm. Do you have any suggestions? Not even in regards to them, but in regards to any hacking. As unimportant as myspace is, I'd hate to be involved with the frying of 30 computers, like that poor kid.

Brush up on security software and adware/spyware, make sure programs are up to date etc. There is probably a million sites that have advice on being secure online that explain it better then anyone here could do.

I know I'm not going to change your mind, I just wanted to point out all of the problems I saw in your statement. :)

:? Alright then...

Firewall is definitely the biggest way to stop a lot of these problems, but also just take your normal cautions of avoiding suspicious emails and stay away from porn sites. Your operating system should also be up-to-date with security flaws. Hackers look for security flaws. So updating and keeping your operating system up to par with that will further help. Hackers get in though pop-ups or small java script files that will download into your temp file and store itself.

Ah, okay. I hope everyone else takes note of that. I've made some mistakes while not paying attention, and paid for it computer wise. So, common sense is the key. Common sense defeats lulz. It's like the ice to it's fire.....if you're in FF8.

Oooh, I hit the 1000 post mark, and under a month. Not even a ban could stop this train. I love you guys.

(PM me with your praises, I'm a huge supporter of staying on topic :*laugh*: :*laugh*: )

The best advice I can give is "Don't be stupid."

Honestly you're not going to get anything bad if you don't click on something. True hackers would already have been in your system if they wanted to be, chances are, they wouldn't bother. One way to prevent this is getting a firewall, most hackers can't get through even one of them, much less two. I run four.

As to get around a keylogger, simply open a word document. Type a ton of randomized letters and numbers. Cut and paste those letters in the order forming your password or "secret" information. Favorite all of the sites you usually go to. Even if they did get one of your passwords, they wouldn't know where to use it.

I don't get it. Is there really a hacker group called Anonymous doing such things, or was it a viral video joke?

Neither, if you really want to know what anonymous is just go to 4chan, pick whatever imageboard you like and you should be able to figure it out in a few seconds.

-_-

Is really my only response for this. Even if this was serious, I wouldn't be able to take it serious as soon as the narrator said "Epic Lulz" it really just makes me shake my head.

Now onto the question TP had. I took at look at 4chan and couldn't find anything? What's -really- up with this? I'm assuming it's another one of those things, that got blown waay out of proportion. *coughs-aquateenhungerforceinbostonincident-coughs*

I've heard commentary about this from a few other sources that filled in the gaps, namely why no one has ever heard about this group prior to this report.

From what I heard, it isn't really a genuine group (as would be quite impossible to do on a message board where it's impossible to know who's posting), rather just a small number of people who find it funny with very minimal to no organization.

What really happened about the story in general was the person who came forward as their "expert" was really just a person who was pissed off that these people wouldn't harass someone that wouldn't go out with them. So he went to them and played it up. Given how dependent the media is on the word of experts, they found some people who had been harassed from anonymous people and the expert linked it together, along with the bomb threats so on and so forth.

So, with all this information in mind, it's part playing it up, part being misled by the "expert", and part that no real outside information was available to verify what he was saying. The long and the short of it, he duped them and they bought it, hook, line and sinker.

I wouldn't compare it to the Boston Aqua Teen thing, that was more of a mix between outright sensationalism and incredibly pathetic paranoia. This was more of they got duped and looked like idiots in the end.
