I know this is a similar situation to the battle with Captain Rowd in Kyaro Town in Suikoden II, but what exactly is the extra dialogue you get? Is it anything interesting or does the story just continue in the exact same way? I'd try but I feel it'd be too much effort for what it is worth.

I did it once, but I forget the exact dialogue. I do remember that your party members are still tired and all that, and Childerich still goes to attack you. It's almost as if nothing happened. At least from what I remember.

When the battle is over they're both lying on the ground, then as you walk away, they get back to their feet as say they can't be defeated by the likes of you. Then the story continues on as planned. Kyle comes in and you guys escape.

More importantly though, is the prize you get for defeating them. Which I believe is the extra rare fortune rune piece.

Makes me wonder why you get the option of winning - the same applying to Rowd in Kyaro Town. I never do any intense levelling up at the begining of games anyway, not that it seemed I needed to.

Erm...is that a battle you normally lose? I won it everytime I've played through without much trouble at all :| We're talking about the seige of Sun Palace at the start of the game when you run into Dolph and Insanerich, then you're saved by Kyle and Zegai?

As I remember it, you stand about panting and such then Dolph does his creepy "stand up after loosing" motion and Childerich just laughs. They move to attack again and wham-bam-thank-you-Kyle.

Nothing really spectacular.

I don't know, I just kind of played in my relaxed way at that point and assumed dying was the only option at the time. :?

It's actually quite an easy battle if spend some time leveling up around Lunas and Raftfleet. Especially if you're on a new game+, just use that three man formation and they go down quite quickly.

The Rowd battle in Suikoden II however, is incredibly hard. You need to spends hours upon hours leveling up Mukumuku and Riou.

Ironically I have won the Rowd battle, but I thought if there was the same reward for both (which was next to nothing) I wouldn't bother.

I haven't found that battle all that difficult if you have enough healing items and smarts. After Sialeeds behavior later in the game, whenever I start a new game I immediately remove all of her items and equipment and put her in the entourage and never use her if I can help it. A little patience is all that is needed with just fighting with the prince and Lyon (Sialeeds of course dies right away since she hasn't leveled).

There are rewards to the battle and until recently, I didn't even know you could lose it.

I too just went ahead and won the battle, I knew the option of losing and continuing the story was available, but never opted to take the easy way out. So what exactly happens if you lose the battle?

I figure it's not disimilar from winning the battle. I assume you stagger back panting (like when you win) and Dolph and Killderich advance towards you when the cut scene kicks in and you're saved.

Much like Ujitsuna, I played in a relaxed way (and I've only gone through it once, because I have too many games to finish) and had absolutely no idea you could win the battle.

I just assumed "Ah well, gotta lose. Let's die" and then let the story move on. I guess I'll try it out on New Game+ when I have time, although I don't think that'll be for a long time.

Ironically, I have won the Rowd battle before.. although I have played through that game a dozen times or so.

I've only played Suikoden V twice, and the first playthrough was just to breeze through the game normally without any walkthrough and whatnot other than asking a few questions about recruitment to some people. The second playthrough was the new game+

When it comes to the fight against Childerich and Dolph, I lost my first fight as I don't quite know what to expect. I also thought that it's one of those must-lose battles. The second time with the new game+ giving me good formations and armors, it's a no brainer and I win easily.

I figured this to be a rowd style battle, I did not try to win it as I was unsure if I would need my runes against a proper boss who could actually kill me, or just get in a rut with enemies. Thankfully Suikoden 5 is not that difficult at all.
