|
|
Since the game came out, one of the first things I noticed was the art and how the costumes were designed. As a played the game, I noticed something else; Some character portraits had different "styles" used. You could tell with the face and the shading methods. Well, that's what thought, but I wasn't too sure.
Until I bought the Artbook (Offial Guide: Character of 108-Starts). Then, I was sure. Suikoden V's character department had up to four different artist; Kaori Fujita, Mihisato, Riya Hozmi, and one I couldn't identify their name.
I wonder which is cheaper: Having one artist drawing all the 108 stars of destiny plus other characters or hiring 4 four artist and dividing their work dishing out the green depending on how much the artist actually did?
I made a list with each artist paired up with the characters they designed.

I don't know what you mean by that but the person who did all the characters of the Island nation and rafleet crews is Sabuzero Kizaki.
he/she along with Mikisato, Kaori Fujita, and Riya Hozmi/Hodumi still all do one colored page each for almost all the anthology comics and the crest/rune series books(that's how their names are spelled in the books).
Personally I find Sabuzero Kizaki's style to be a bit off from the other artists as his/her characters appears pretty obviously different from the others once the viewer is aware of the different artists. He/she has a much simpler approach in drawing characters than the others and focus a lot less on the details, all of the characters looks not as computer generated as the others, even the outlines are rougher, I don't know if it's kept that way as part of the style or something else, they all still look very good but it's just different.
I feel there are very little difference between the works of Kaori Fujita and Mikisato except Fujita loves to put a great deal of detail around the eyes of the characters(lots of heavy eye lashes) plus include alot of highlights and shinning glares bouncing off of bodies, hair and clothing of all characters. I love those things for the most part but in comparison Mikisato's characters seems to show better expressions without looking like there's constantly a crazy amount of light shinning on them. Riya Hozmi/Hodumi's style seems to be less detailed but there's much more details when it comes to the characters' face and hair than Sabuzero Kizaki, so it's a nice middle ground that's not all that different form the other two.
I been looking into this art issue for a while as well after getting the same book last year that had each characters' design/drawing credits, I don't know if this is obvious information or not but it seems the lead artist: Kaori Fujita have been working with the suikoden series and konami for quite a while and is some what of an expert on drawing/designing extensive clothing.
By looking through the suikoden card stories books it seems Fujita was given total artistic control over all the arts for the narcissist characters=lot and lots of fancy cloth. Other characters drawn by the artist all have super amazing cloth, though for some reason his/her works was computer edited alot less in the later card releases, which greatly reduced the highlights and the overall sharpness of the arts, though that's not a bad thing at all as it made everything look smoother. _________________ SAVE A.D. - S.O.B.s

Just sit back and wait for "Michael Harrington" to appear on the list for suikoden 7 or 8 - once I finish my "game art and design" degree :D _________________

That's really interesting to be honest, I would have thought the person who designed Sialeeds and everyone else would be rather a male more than anything else considering most of the females were quite full-figured.
So it's really quite interesting to see a female was incharge of designing all these full-figured women. I think I probably like Kaori the most though, since her characters appeal to me the most out of the whole group. _________________

I didn't know because I only had a 2 Suikoden V Ang. books; like 3 and 5 I think. So, I guess I didn't have enough information. ^^ Thanks, though! I add the name to the list.

I agree with you. The art looks very different from from the artist. Like you said; it's simple. And, as far as the lineart goes, it looks like it's done tradionally then scanned and altered that way. I can kinda tell because some of the lines look jagged, but not badly. I make this same mistake with drawing; I'm too lazy to do lineart digitally, it takes to freaking long. I guess is what Kizaki was thinking XD _________________ "...." - Any silent Hero

I wasn't too surprised. You can tell Sialeeds along with others in her group was drawn by a girl. How can I tell? I dunno, I guess it was the amout of detail on the clothes, the shading (soft, but shining across the skin), and those bright colors! But, then, you're probably wondering; can a artist gender be determined by style? I think so. _________________ "...." - Any silent Hero

Well, even though I don't like Hazuki at all I found her in the Sabuzero Kizaki collumn. o_O Anyway, I didn't even notice there were different art styles. I always pay more attention to the game sprites more than the art. _________________

If you look at those books Sabuzero Kizaki's colored works on the front are even more simple and relaxed, if anything he/she actually sharpened up his/her work dramatically for the in game arts, where as there's not that big of a drop off in the works of the other artists.

yes Sabuzero Kizaki designed/drew her, you can tell because the character's hair is in more of a whole form rather than well separated in to many streaks, the facial features are not as detailed as the other artists' characters, plus Kizaki's characters in general have less excessive clothing that leads to heavy folds or wrinkles (and obviously he/she was credited in print too). _________________ SAVE A.D. - S.O.B.s

So...where does King, the "character designer" come into this? I assume then, that he did some of the in-game portraits, which differ from the standard full-body character artwork? No, that can't be right, because I can tell that the person that did Raja, Logg, Kisara, etc. also did their in-game portraits, even the "extra" ones that show various emotions.
So what did King do exactly? Did he draw the characters in black-and-white (pencil/pen/whatever), and then these artists did the coloring/painting? _________________

hate to sound disrespectful to whoever that is but who the hell is king? He obviously didn't draw or color anything because as we been talking about, those four artists have their own unique styles when it comes to drawing their characters which is why there are visible differences between the arts. So if this "king" person had anything to do at all with character designs it must be as some sort of advisor or supervisor for an overall style and nothing more. _________________ SAVE A.D. - S.O.B.s

I'm fairly certain King takes credit for the design of the Sun Rune. which compared to other True Runes does looks different. At least I think he made a comment about that in the blog but my memory isn't what it should be. _________________ Prejudice is a great timesaver.
