Regarding the "Different kind of a Tenkai" part of the topic, I was thinking that it's a bit silly for the army's leader to be doing all the dangerous stuff. How about a Tenkai that isn't a combat character at all, instead staying behind and leading the army? Suikoden III partly had something like this with Thomas, although he wasn't really a leader and fell out of sight in most of the game. However, in that game, the other three main characters were able to recruit stars, although it was realized in a kind of offhand way, most of the time they didn't even think they were recruiting an army of Stars of Destiny. This time, make it obvious that the main character(s) are in command of the Tenkai and recruiting an army for him/her.
There is also another idea. How about a character, not necessarily Tenkai, that knows of the Stars of Destiny and knows of his/her own position in the SoD, but does not want to accept it? It it were a Tenkai, it could be a young scholar that has seen the tragedies surrounding gatherings of the 108 stars, or perhaps doesn't trust the machinations of fate in the world of Suikoden, and therefore does not want to accept a role with the 108 Stars of Destiny. It could be also a minor character in Lukien's style, who is well knowledgeable of the Stars of Destiny, but perhaps for similar reasons wants to avert sharing this destiny.
These ideas could even be combined. A Tenkai that is resistant to the gathering of the SoD, therefore does not want to get involved and does not want to personally recruit people, although reluctantly agrees to leadership of the army and to other people recruiting the SoD... all the while lamenting how the SoD are coming together and feeling powerless before fate. |
