Production has been announced, the title is tenatively: "Dragon Quest IX: Guard of the Starry Night." So here comes the really shocking news. It won't be for PS3. It won't even be for Wii. It'll be a Nintendo DS exclusive. The all about it here.

Sony took a big hit here-- especially in Japan where Dragon Quest is easily as popular as Final Fantasy. This really makes me glad I purchased a Wii and a DS rather then a PS3.

That's too bad. I would have liked to try that someday, but I highly doubt I will be getting a DS anytime soon. Good news that they are continuing these games though. The captions in that article though are kinda funny.

The game will apparently involve characters shouting numbers at big greenish guys.

Man they should have made it come out for the Wii. That would have been too fun, if it played like a cross breed between the Zelda game and a traditional RPG.. ooh well I can dream.

I agree, it should have come out on the Wii. Those inconsiderate little bums!!! I really didn't want to buy a DS, but it's getting even more difficult to hold out.

Thanks for the news Gil, first I've heard of it!

The only thing that makes me concerned about this is that it's no longer turn-based. Dragon Quest/Warrior has always been known for it's traditional turn-based gameplay, and I will honestly miss that aspect.

Still, I have no doubt that it'll be good, because Level 5 are making it! :D

Man, this is bad news for me. I have never been a fan of handheld consoles, and I would never consider buying one. It's just too bad that DQ9 would have to be realeased on the DS. Dragon Quest VIII was one of the best games the PS2 has ever had, and it's sad news for me that I'm not getting this installment, just because it's on a platform I will never have.

Meh, I wouldn't worry about it, I'm sure it will be available through less legal channels sooner or later.

Anyway I've never been a huge fan of the Dragon Quest games. Dragon Quest VIII was a good game but there was nothing special about it, the graphics were good, the sound mediocre (though the voices were well done), the gameplay was overly simple (I don't understand why people can say it's a good thing) and the story...well the story was pure Dragon Quest. The characters were the best thing about the game (personality wise) but I think they could have been made more interesting.

So I guess my point is that I don't care all that much about the game. The DS seems to fit what they have in mind for the game but I think they should have made it a spin off title rather than DQIX. Making it an action RPG will be great for multiplayer but it will probably make single player worse.

I already have a DS, so that's not a problem. I am just very interested to see what's going to happen now that they dropped the "VIII" part from the Journey of the Cursed King's PAL release. Most probably they'll just drop the number this time as well, but still.

Well that's a damn shame then. I've never been a fan of handheld devices, so I don't see myself ever picking up a DS. It's surprising that a title from the main Dragon Quest franchise would limit itself to being produced on something like a DS, where usually you'd expect a side-series like the Dragon Quest Monster titles or other smaller versions of the DQ series.

It's too early to tell though; so many things could change by the time this game comes out. I wouldn't be too surprised if this game got a full release on the PS3 and/or the Nintendo Wii at some point in time. I always look to Resident Evil 4 when I consider things like this. That game was supposed to have an exclusive release on the Gamecube, but lo and behold we eventually got it on the PS2 as well.

This news shall surely disappoint a few of the older fans who just don't touch handheld devices...

You know, this may sound crotchety of me, but I'm sort of happy about this just because it's turning away the people who hopped onto the Dragon Quest bandwagon with VIII. I liked Dragon Quest being that quiet nod to old-schoolin' for North American gamers. It going all mainstream and fancified sort of disappointed me. Yes, I am well aware of the series' absolutely ridiculous popularity in Japan.

I own a DS, I enjoy action-RPGs, I am an avid fan of Dragon Quest, and I haven't played a Level 5 game that I've disliked. So, I am pleased with this.

It makes sense, the DS has the largest user base going. Between the Wii, PS3, 360, DS, PSP. DS has the most units sold.

I hope Dragon Quest IX isn't destined for failure. Because I love DQ games, and it'd be a shame to see it flop. (With the exception of VII, I hate that game.)
