I saw the movie the Departed today, and I was extremely impressed. Awesome movie. Great plot, great characters, and great actors. There are some excellent surprises, and I was thouroughly entertained throughout the entire movie.
I highly recommend seeing it if anyone has the chance! |

Martin Scorcese's The Departed is one film that's on my must-see list before it leaves the theaters and heads on over to DVD. I usually see films on this particular list of mine on the first weekend of its release, but I've made the decision to forgo seeing it the first weekend and check it out next week. Other than some cultural and philosophical elements, I don't think I'll be missing out much on the story being spoiled for me by those who have seen it. I say this with confidence since I've already seen the original film (very good Hong Kong thriller, Infernal Affairs) Scorcese remade to make The Departed. Screenwriter William Monahan stuck very close to the plot of the original so I don't expect any large changes that would've changed the overall story of the original film. I do expect to see it before the 20th which will have another film on my must-see list: The Prestige. _________________

Were the second and third Internal Affairs movies any good?
I thought The Departed was an incredible flick. I lost time watching this movie; I was so in tuned with this movie. There wasn't a second of lull time. It was fast paced, well acted, with enough head shots to keep me happy
I am not really a fan of Leonardo Di Caprio at all. I think that at 30 something, he sitll looks like he is 14, and he cannot pull off a tough guy to save his life. Furthermore, he just has an annoying presence. But he was tollerable in this film. I thought Matt Damon did a top-notch job (another actor I am not too fond of), but I think that Crazy Jack stole the show. Alec Baldwin had a really great character to work with as well.
I have to say that The Departed is one of the best films I have seen in recent years. Scorcese is finally back to making great films. _________________ Kooluk's Resident Drunkard.

I have yet to watch this movie, so I probably will over the weekend. It's looking quite good, and my friends are very interested in it, so I might as well see what it's all about. _________________

Maybe I just went into it under the wrong circumstances (three hours of sleep the night before!) but I really didn't see what everyone is praising, aside from the acting. It felt at least an hour longer than it needed to be and the last act came off like South Park's junior detectives episode all over again.
I'll give it another try on DVD assuming I'm in a better state of mind. Most films which garner early talk of Oscar wins have to be seriously off-base in some way to gain my ire (Crash is a good example;) I figure The Departed was simply the wrong movie on the wrong day. Should've seen Trailer Park Boys instead. _________________ • The Caffeine-Fueled Blogonomicon - Your Best Daily Source For Inappropriate Content. |

I can agree that the movie was long, but I think the length really added to the excitement and suspense. There were multiple opportunities for them to find out about each other earlier than when they actually did. The fact that it took so long was what I liked. You began to get the feeling that they almost wouldn't.
I'll definately buy the DVD, but it isn't really a movie I could watch more than a few times, just because I know all the surprises, and it is fairly long. |

I think Mark Wahlberg did the best job acting out of the whole movie,
He did a really good job as a rogue cop role.
Wow can you believe that their thinking of making a sequal of the movie. (What is there to make a sequal of, thats what I'm thinking...) _________________ IN AMERICA! |

Martin Scorcese won't do a sequel. Without him the studio won't do a sequel. I wouldn't expect a sequel, really.
Infernal Affairs is one of my favorite Hong Kong movies, and I really do think that The Departed is a very good remake of it. As Tull said, the screenplay was changed very, very little from the original Chinese screenplay. The only major difference was the upped body count at the end of the movie.
While it was a good movie, it was hardly Scorcese's best-- and in my opinion Babel deserved the best picture award over The Departed. It seems to me that they really just wanted to give Scorcese the award because of the fact that it has some how managed to slip between his fingers more times than I can count on my hand. meh.

Just out of curiosity: I hear talk like that of Leo all the time-- and I've really begun to wonder where it all started. I mean-- I look at his acting career, and I see so many movies that have just absolutely stellar performances from him. Titanic, Gangs of New York, Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, and Blood Diamond and The Departed added to that impressive list this year. He's really done a terrific job in many movies, so I really am curious as to where his bad rep came from. *scratches head* _________________

I think his role in Titanic makes some people wary of him. |

I didn't mind DiCaprio in Titanic. I didn't go to see it for him but to see the boat sink and sink it did. I think people see it almost like a sport to bash him and that movie though I guaran-damn-tee that all who do has seen the movie at least once. A movie doesn't pull in close to 2 billion dollars in box office without having a boat load of people seeing it. _________________
