I'm interested in knowing whatever parts people used most on their computer. I myself usually buy new parts whenever I had the money (usually every three months).
Here is my current specifications :
1. Processor : for the processor, I used AMD Athlon XP Barton 2800+ mainly because it's cheaper than P4 and Athlon didn't give too much damn for the socket change (Like now, if you bought P4 Prescott, you need to change your motherboard, which means more money). I actually wanted to buy AMD 64 but it's still expensive, both the processor and the motherboard. Maybe next year.
2. Motherboard : For motherboard, I used Abit AN-7 with nForce2 ultra chip. This motherboard is IMO the fastest for Athlon platform. And it has complete feature too, SATA port, FSB-400, Dual-channel memory, and a nice BIOS, not to mention that it is cheaper than ASUS. This is actually my old board because last month I bought a DFI LanParty NF-II Ultra but after a while I didn't use it because the Abit give me a slightly better performance, and it's really a good board to overclocked. The DFI is not a bad board at all BTW, the feature is wonderful and it has a nice appearance.
3. VGA card : I still used a middle-end AGP 8x graphic card, GeXcube ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Extreme. The gecube brand prove themselves as the best in 9600 pro class since in the extreme edition, you can overclock the performance nearly to Radeon 9800. For comparison, 9800 as a high-end graphic card costs at least 400 bucks, while the 9600Pro priced around 140 bucks, so it's a good bet. Radeon x-800 really hooked me now, as well as the PCI express graphic cards, but I just don't have the money. An ASUS Radeon X-800 Xt costs....850 bucks! Anyway I really prefer using ATI than nVidia, mostly based on the performance and the price.
4. Memory : I used Dual 256mb TwinMos PC3200 memory because my motherboard supports dual channel, and it gives slightly better performance (I mean it, just slightly). I was conserving my money as well as doing some part time job to buy another memory card so it can reach 1 GB so my computer could be really fast. I don't reccomend my brand though. Visipro gives much better performance, with more price.
5. HardDisk : I used a Serial ATA harddisk, Seagate Barracuda 80 Gb. It's enough for gaming and I have no plan in the near future to expand it. But if you wanted to buy a new harddisk, I reccomend Samsung Spinpoint 120 GB since it got some very good marks in Chip, PC Media, and Tom's Hardware. I have never tested it my own, but the Chip team is a lot more professional than me. And not to mention that the Samsung is not too expensive.
6. CD/DVD drive : there are three in my racks, a Sony CD-rom, a Samsung CD-Rw, and a MSI dvd rom. A lot huh? :D that's because I upgraded it time to time. You can buy it much cheaper if you bought a DVD-combo though, it has those three functions
7. Soundcard : I used the integrated one in my motherboard, it's enough for me and the performance is quite good.
8. Casing : I've never think much about a casing, just as long as the power supply is good. I used a Simbadda SC-809 with 6 fan and 400 watt power supply. And it costs only around 30 dollars.
9. Speaker, mouse, keyboar, monitor : Frankly speaking, I've never upgrade them. The speaker is an old 2.1 Altec Lansing, which performance is still good. The Monitor is 15 inches Samsung Syncmaster, an optical BenQ mini mouse, and a standard Acer keyboard.
10. Printer : An Epson stylus color 480, it's just enough for me.
That's about it, how about you? _________________

Ha, I just have to make a post for those of us who don't care about computers enough to upgrade unless it's necessary. I have an AMD 800 processor and a system to match it. Used to be pretty sweet five years ago. Now some of the hardware is failing and I'm having a few system freezes. I had to replace my hard drive too, but even then I went used and got a lousy 40 gig one!
And I'm proud because I can spend my money on other things, like arcade cabinets which don't depreciate in value as much. Which is not to say I don't understand why you guys have your fancy computers. I used to be like you and I respect your magnificent "hardware". Even so, I feel then need to boast my wimpy computer. |

Er, guys? No offense, but wouldn't having this information posted on the internet make it a lot easier for someone to hack into your computers with some of the information posted? _________________

No no, not really. Hacker attack your system first, so as long as your system is protected you don't have to worry that much. (and don't visit some dangerous site such as the pornographic one) _________________
