wow... Ive seen a lot of mentions of this game in other threads, but I havent actually seen a thread for it... well its up to me to save the day
now Disgaea to me is like a drug... I use it to get kicks, laugh at something stupid, and make me feel better when Im depressed... but like a drug, it became addicting... now I cant stop playing it... oh no!
for those of you that dont know, its a SRPG that is very simaler to the game that shalt not be mentioned tactics, but in my opinion, Disgaea is a lot better
although the story for Disgaea is horribly cheesy and somewhat linear, it still is enough to make you laugh... especially if you dont take it seriously
the gameplay is what makes it addicting... It has the levels and stats of a stereotypical SRPG, but when it comes to levels, Disgaea gos WAY over what most RPGs in general have... you can get up to level 9999!! holy crap berries!
there are only two problems with this game that I can find... one of them is the addicting gameplay... it sucks in your life! Ive never played a game longer than 70 hours before Disgaea... and now Im at 130 hours... and Im not where I want to be yet... whered my life go?
the other thing is the warriors and the thiefs catch phrase... it becomes very annoying, very fast... when will the torment of hearing "Ill finish this!" and "you're mine!" and "whos the man!" ever end?
the thing that got me to want to play this game in the first place, has got to be the coolest thing about the game...
Exploding Demonic Penguins... yes, you read right...
not only that, but they say "DOOD!!" all the time... it's awesome
I love this game, and it's possibly my favorite SRPG now...
what do other people besides me think of this?

Disgaea has really set the standard for recent Nippon Ichi games, and Phantom Brave borrowed some concepts from Disgaea. Unlike Phantom Brave, Disgaea doesn't cram a billion features and expect you to make it work. Its gameplay is simple enough to start with, yet when you get into things like the sealed worlds and the Item world, that's where the depth comes in.

I've clocked about 200+ hours myself, and they've been worth it. The item world actually has results that you can see and experience with your weapons and armor, and nabbing specialists to move from useless weapons to godly weapons is a GREAT asset. My preferred specialists are the Armsmaster and the Statiscian. Leveling up Legend weapons to 100 is a real treat b/c they give you the most population spaces for your specialists, and the sword I have for Laharl has made him a virtual fighting god.

It's not just the item world that gives you challenges. I enjoyed the sealed worlds and how tough they are, especially when you fight to recruit two certain ladies from Rhapsody and La Pucelle Tactics, which were made before Disgaea. After them, defeating the Lord of Terror, Baal, is a real feat, which I've done. Stealing his armor and weapon is a must-do before killing him. Unfortunately, my guys aren't strong enough to fight Prinny Baal yet... as if level 4000 is something to scream about.

I bought this game, and it didn't work on my PS2 so I returned it thinking it was the game's fault...only to find out I had that laser-reading disc problem. So I fixed that but couldn't find Disgaea again to buy. So I bought Phantom Brave instead, but I really do want to try to pick up Disgaea again someday.

I also really like Disgaea, it's so hilarious. There's already a thread about NIS games (Including Disgaea) here: http://www.suikox.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=957&postdays=0&postorder=as c&start=0

Well, I'm not an addict to this game but I used to play it a lot in the past, I reached the half but I didn't finish it to this time because I erased my Disgaea save data (stupid move), I regret doing that because I really want to see the ending and I really don't want to play through the first half again, not because it is boring or something, because I worked very hard the first time and don't have the well to do the same again.

I enjoyed the dark and silly humor in Disgaea, the somewhat hard strategic battles, and the many different moves the main characters have, but one thing I didn't like is the whole create/make your own fighting characters to win, the main characters in my opinion should've been more than enough.

I also didn't like the concept of leveling your character/items/weapons like crazy, leveling to beat the final boss is fine, extra bosses that needs more than 99 LV to be beaten don't concern me, I play this game to enjoy my time with the story, I don't need to be bothered if the extra bosses don't add a thing to the story, doing that just for beating something hard won't satisfy me.

Nonetheless, Disgaea is my second favorite Nippon Itchi's games, second to La Pucelle, third is Phantom Brave, still have to try Phantom Kingdom when it gets released (didn't play Rhapsody but I liked what I hared).

I think I talked a lot, to sum things up, Disgaea is good but not great, and you ought to check the link Keriaku provided in his post, you might find the other games as interesting as Disgaea.

I loved the game for the same reasons as everyone else, but I didn't finish the game for one simple reason. There are too many characters in my party to level up, and it takes too long to gain levels. I'm at the last area of the game's plot, but the enemies are too hard. Only Laharl is high enough in level to stand a chance, and it will take several hours of trying to level up healers and mages and all of the plot characters and I simply don't have the mental fortitude for it anymore. And whats worse is when I finally get access to a newer and better class, like a better mage. I have to choose between getting the newer character at level 1 and starting over with that character type or instead keeping my inferior character who is much higher in level and won't take hours upon hours to beef up.

I just wish everyone on the field got experience points (even a little) from every monster killed.

I own Disgaea, La Pucelle, and Phantom Brave, but I just can't bring myself to play them. When I found out that you could in theory, level up your characters to lvl 1000 then bring them back to 1 with a good portion of their stats and all, I just gave up. I'm one of those kinds of players who like to try and max out everything and get everything in the game, just to say that I did it. The whole reseting levels thing just seems so daunting to me, and theres tons of different ways to do anything that I just gave up entirely. It would take me to the end of my life trying to accomplish everything that I could in that game, much less all 3 (soon to be 4) games. @_@;

Maybe if I can get over the impulse that makes me want to finish each game 100% each time, then I'll start playing them. XD Until then...they're kinda collecting dust...and it makes me sad, cause they're great games, but I just don't have the motivation to play them now. (T.T)

Yes! That part is hilarious. I'm currently on chapter 7... Been lolligaging since then since I finally got enough Mana to transmigrate Laharl to Genius. :D

There are way too many things to do in this game besides the storyline. FUN!

anyone know why the price of this game is going back up after a decline after it was reprinted? It was worth about $45 used and $60 brand new before atlus reprinted it last summer when both price dropped by about $10-15 bucks, but for some reason now it's back up to about what it was before the reprint. Can't you just find this game anywhere? about 1/2 of the gamestops I go to have used copies and I can easily find new copies at many stores. I'm happy about the price since I got 2 used copies and 1 brand new but I don't see how it came back up.

PRINNY, DOOD.

PRINNY, DOOD.

PRINNY, DOOOOOOD.

Yes, I too adore Disgaea. Which is a shame, because I don't own it, and can't afford it ;_; (perhaps for my birthday... hmm.... yeees..)

But I emptied half my life into when I borrowed it from a friend of mine (failed a law project cuz I spent all my time playing it, hahah). I was getting pretty overwhelmed by it eventually, though, and I had to stop progressing the storyline so that I could chill, level up my weapons and items, and talk to that council thing.. which was also awesome. There is just so much in this game that warrants constant playing, which makes New Game+ a very clever implementation. Aaargh, I really want to play this game again. Even if only to see the awesome, awesome Prinnys again.

Prinny, dood!

Disgaea definately had some great lines in it.... the power ranger spoof was hilarious, so was the overly dramatic space guy and gal. It poked fun at the common character cliches. The story itself was hilarious, it didn't take itself too seriously... so you shouldn't take the story serious yourself. nin nin nin.... dood :)

As for gameplay, well it dared you to powergame your way through. The main story luckily enough can be beat without any of that stuff so don't avoid the game because it of it's powergaming features. Gameplay is deep though, and in the end, that's what's great about it.

That one cracked me up because it was totally unexpected!
