I started playing Eve Online the other day, and I got hooked.
For those who don't know, Eve Online is a MMORPG with a space theme run by some company in Iceland.
There's only one server that is accessed by users all over the world (except China), and the client is fairly light on the PC.
What I like about it is you don't have to fight and can focus on being a merchant or other type of non-combat role.
Anybody else around here play this game?
I'm a Caldari (one of the four player factions). |

That sounds very interesting. I've never heard of it before. Is there a premise to it or do you just kinda do whatever? _________________ The immortal chickens shall rule the world!! |

Just like any other MMORPG there's no real "purpose," but there's perpetually some sort of war going on between the four main factions, including player-run corporations and other types of groups. It seems like you can also choose to stay out of all the conflict and mind your own business as a researcher, merchant, archaeologist, etc.
Oh yes, and unlike most MMORPG's you don't walk around as your character at all. Throughout the game you're moving your ship around (although you can make a portrait for your own character) instead. Combat is fairly simple because you don't have to really control anything yourself-- the targeting computer does all the actual fighting. You just set the parameters. |

Interesting. I might check that out then. My school's internet probably could support it. Does it cost money? Like a monthly fee or something to use the online part? I've never really done online gaming before. _________________ The immortal chickens shall rule the world!! |

Here's a video of what the game is about:

Eve Online has a 14 day free trial thingie, but otherwise they charge money to play.
I paid about $100 for a full year subscription after the trial period expired. |

Indeed, it does look interesting, and I have actually looked in to it before, however online games have always been too much of a consistent monetary investment for me, especially right now when I have a such a small source of income, and such a large drain on it. _________________

Oh, I used to play this a while back, it kept me playing for about a year and a half. One problem is it takes about a year before you're skilled up enough to use the interesting stuff in the game. That's more relevant to PvP fighting, you can mine and trade relatively quicker than that, you can also NPC quite easily - though even that's dangerous. Nowhere is particularly safe in Eve.
If you're trading you might consider pushing Gallente Industrial to V rather than Caldari - they have better industrial ships and their freighter is more common. Unless it's changed since I last played.
You should pick up the program EveMon Vextor, it lets you make up skill plans for what you want to fly/use and things. It also monitors your character without the need to log in and do it. It's pretty handy. _________________
