That's right. Early in the game I never used fire for fear of burning my own team to cinders but near the end of the game everyone just decided to evade the damage from fire. I know there is a certain skill which caters for that but I don't recall learning it.

In my opinion,

1) Lighting - Make great damage to single enemy, especially to bosses!

2) Water - Very helpful when the companions are half-dead.

3) Wind - Good in both attack and defense.

4) Fire - Good attack for multiple enemies, but not much help since the normal attacks are enough to kill the enemies.

5) Earth - Not much say, just a useless rune.
