Does anyone know what he is currently doing? Any new games he is working on? I haven't heard or read anything about him in a while.

As far as I know, we haven't heard anything from Murayama since his action game Tsukiyo ni Saraba came out (released in Japan in late 2004/early 2005). It sold poorly.

Of course, I'm hoping that he's secretly been hired by Konami to write and direct Suikoden 6, but that's probably about as likely as an alien invasion from outer space.

Well hopefully Konami swallowed their pride and kissed some major ass, otherwise I don't see that happening!

He does have his own company, which has a site:

http://www.bm.ai/

According to one of his mist recent blog entries (which he updates very rarely), the last game he wrote scenario for was "Tensei Gakuen Gekko-Roku" which is sort of like a occult-themed dating game. After that he worked on writing the scenario for a manga for "Tensei Gakuen." It also said he has a "new project from March," so likely he has something else he's working on right now.

He also says he has a "very large project involving a large company" in the future which he's not sure if he'd accept.

Ooo that last part sounds promising - btw, what happened between he and Konami? where was the breakdown and what was it over?

I heard about the dating game, was curious to know if he had done anything else since. Interesting to hear about the "large project" as well. Thanks to you very much for the link to his studio Vex.

Its not really known for sure, but the general assumption is that they had a falling out while he was making Suikoden III. If I remember correctly, it is believed that Murayama scripted the whole game except for the last few chapters, which were picked up by the remaining team.

It has been awhile though, so my memory is a bit hazy on the subject.

This might explain some of it. As well as giving me a cheap plug.

Indeed - hmm...but WHY did he leave? Were they not paying him enough? Allowing him enough creative license?

Mainly the latter from what I hear. Was Suikoden Murayama's baby or Konami's? Both felt it was their own and so a painful divorce was in order with rich mommy Konami getting sole custody.

Oh my - If that's the case I wonder what he had up his sleeve that conflicted with Konami's interpretation of where the Suikoden series should go. Interesting..

I was about to start a new topic regarding peoples thoughts about creating a petition or something to bring Murayama back as the lead director; what are the feelings out there? Did the series peek during his reign? Or has it improved since his departure? I was gonna make a pole and everything! gah! But I figured the topics were too close so here I am, editing my last post to put in these final thoughts.

I'm pretty sure we had it confirmed by a Konami employee someone ran into at a convention or something that he did write the entire scenario. But I don't really remember, so it's possible that a few little bits were picked up by the team. There's nothing missing or anything, though (like a Sasarai POV, as John points out in his link).

I think it is a common opinion, that after III (or for some, after II), the series dropped off quite a bit. And I would agree for the most part, though I must say V was a step in the right direction. I wonder how IV and V would have turned out if Murayama was still running the show? Would we even have gone to the INF or Falena? There were definitely game elements pointing towards the western continent back then!
