Whether one likes Quentin Tarantino (Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Vol 1/2) and Robert Rodirguez (El Mariachia, Desperado, Sin City) as filmmakers or not there's no denying that they have quite the boatload of talent when it comes to their profession. Another thing I have to respect about these two BFF directors are their love for making movies and watching them. They've professed their love not just for the cult, indie art-house films, but also for the down and dirty grindhouse movies that were cranked out by the dozens a month during the late 1970's all the way through the mid-1980's. Grindhouse was a term used for cheap movie theaters where the types movies shown were exploitation movies that concentrated on sensationalist display of sex, gore, and violence instead of going the artistic merit path.

Tarantino did his Kill Bill, Volumes 1 and 2 as a artistic homage to the grindhouse movies he saw as a kid and teenager. Rodriguez's From Dusk til Dawn was another homage to that particular genre. This time around they've collaborated together to create an anthology horror movie which really follows the strict guidelines of what makes a grindhouse exploitation film. Even the look of their film will have that grainy, slightly used look down to the frame skipping and missing frame look. They've even directed fake "trailers" to show in-between their halves of the anthology.

Rodriguez's half will be called Planet Terror and after a brief couple minute intermission where they show the fake trailers (Tarantino will be directing a fake one called They Call Him Machete with Eli Roth and Edgar Wright also doing each) Tarantino's other half will show and it's called Death Proof. The first half is a zombie movie while the second one a slasher movie where the killer uses a 1969/70 Dodge Charger to kill his victims.

Here's the first full teaser trailer for Grindhouse. It even shows brief clips of Tarantino's They Call Him Machete fake trailer. In addition to Zack Snyder's 300, this is the one movie I can't wait to see when it comes out this April 6, 2007.

I'll be more excited come time to go see it, but until then I find it doesnt stay with me during the day, I only ever think about it when someone mentions it. I'll like it, but I just hope Tarantino keeps his excentric mouth at bay.

This little article about the film sure has made me smile in anticipation.

GRINDHOUSE FINDS THE LINE, PISSES RIGHT OVER IT

When Wes Craven made the original The Last House on the Left, he and his editor went down the hall from where they were cutting the movie and removed the R-rating from another film and spliced it into theirs. That’s the kind of exploitation gumption that made the grindhouse films of the 70s so wonderful – and that Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez may have to imitate to ever get their new film, Grindhouse, a palatable rating.

New York Post’s Page Six is reporting that the current cut of the movie, including the fake trailers in between Rodriguez’ and Tarantino’s halves, can never, ever get an R-rating. Some of the stuff they say makes the film outside of the MPAA’s comfort zone:

"Grindhouse" is actually two short movies - one directed by Tarantino, the other by Rodriguez - with an intermission between them. During the break, a series of fake trailers will be shown for such fictitious titles as "Werewolf Women of the SS," directed by Rob Zombie.

"In one scene, a cute, topless girl is roughly tied down on a table by evil female Nazi experimenters who begin draining her blood and, as she screams in agony, they brand her like livestock with a coal-hot steel swastika," our source said. "And every girl in the Nazi concentration camp is topless."

Another trailer, directed by Eli Roth, of "Hostel" fame, is called "Thanksgiving," in which a town's celebration of Turkey Day is interrupted by a mad slasher.

"There's a part where Jordan Ladd [daughter of Cheryl Ladd of 'Charlie's Angels'] is in a car with her boyfriend and giving him [oral sex] when she lovingly reaches to stroke his hair and discovers his neck is just a bloody stump - some maniac had just cut off his head while she was in the act."

Later, a frisky cheerleader climbs onto a trampoline and begins stripping naked as she jumps up and down until she does a split and her skirt blows up without panties underneath. "You get the full 'Britney Spears-getting-out-of-the-limo view,' " our source says. Another jolting scene shows a grossly obese man chewing on a baby.

What’s interesting from the report is that it’s obvious that the person has seen only these two trailers – there’s no mention of extreme content in the main films, or in Edgar Wright’s trailer (which is actually probably less over the top than the ones by Roth and Zombie anyway). I actually think that most of that stuff will get by the MPAA, although I do think a full split beaver shot would be more than the ratings board could handle. But the MPAA has been talking about new ratings systems, or at least new ways of using the current ratings, and Grindhouse could be a good first effort for a new ‘Hard R’ category.

Tarantino is fine right up until he opens his mouth. The guy just needs to shut up. I really don't think I'll go watch this collaboration. It's not because of who's directing it, my personal feelings on what directors say or act doesn't influence what I'll watch. I just wasn't really interested by the trailers. They elicited a big yawn from me when I watched them in the theater. I probably just don't like the grindhouse genre of movies.

Here's a couple of entries that were submitted to the SXSW Grindhouse trailer contest. The winner will ha ve their fake trailer included in the DVD release of the movie.

Hobo With a Shotgun trailer

Jesus Rises trailer (I'm thinking these folks gonna go to hell)

Iron Gestapo trailer

Isle of the Flesheaters trailer

Hippy Bastards from Hell trailer

Oh man, these are hilarious. There's tons more on YouTube.

I've actually been trying to avoid watching trailers for this, as to not get too excited. I know that I won't be able to catch it in the theaters, so I'm going to to have to wait for the DVD. :( But, this really does look like a lot of fun. What's better than a girl with a gun for a leg?

To complement the hilarity of the fake trailers for Grindhouse, I thought I'd give the PG version of 300 trailer. It's not as well made as those, but I still find it pretty amusing. tada

This one can say that they have very little talent, especially the first one. Desperado is the only movie in your list there that I can stand to watch and it ain't that great.

I don't want to see this movie and I wish they'd quit advertising it. Sorry to be a downer (well not really) but I just cannot fathom what people see in these twos' movies.

Anyway, have fun, those of you who really want to see this.

i think there is a lot to be said in deciding the difference in liking someone's movies and saying they're produced poorly. I don't care much for tarantino's work, but it's impossiblt to deny that the man comes from a very educated world of cinema, and knows a lot about not only the history of movies, but what makes people really appreciate them. I think he's a very talent and very smart guy, but his overly opinionated bullshit and cockamamy dialogue generally lose me on his films. it terms of cinematic achievement they both have stretched the limits and really proven themselves to be excellent directors and movie makers. i just wish people would stop writing off their movies as horrible crap because of the subject matter.
