Honestly, I don't see why there's all sorts of trash talk concerning Suikoden IV. Given, a good number of people here seem to be able to back up their opinions, but ever since my friend Suru mentioned it some time ago, I've never been able to manage an understanding of why someone would dislike Suikoden IV.
I originally thought it was the whole boating thing that turned a lot of people off because, barring the boating, the game would have been tons shorter, but it really grew on me, as it gave me a good reason to level and pass time when I had nothing better to do. I started to think that it was because of the poor characterization, but, really, once you leave Middleport, things start picking up. I thought it was because of the lack of difficulty, but I've always been of the mind that battles don't always have to be hard in order to be enjoyable [thank you, Grandia, for teaching me THAT lesson], and Suikoden IV has quite a few enjoyable battles. I actually laughed at the battle with the Mother Crab near the beginning, watching that sad little cat get chased around.
Is it because of the fact that it just doesn't fit well in the Suikoden universe? I mean, gameplay-wise, it was removed from Suikoden III, and it didn't completely throw back to the previous two titles. Was it also because of the fact that it took place in a remote land not even close to the central continent, away from all the action, long before any of it ever happened?
I don't know.
Honestly, I blame Snowe. I hated him.
