Well, the fact he wanted to take the better part of an extremely large and well populated continent just to stop his own angst does tend to give me that impression.

He followed what he believed, but there were other roads available that didn't lead to killing thousands if not millions of people, just to stop his own angst. He thought HE knew better than everyone else and HE was going to show everyone the proper way. He was blind to everything but his own problems.
