I agree with Yvl, Pain was the only one of the three that didn't kill me with the teen girl glee.

The best thing about Kratos is that he doesn't require 299 additional Spartans to take on the Persian Army.

I definetly would have to go with saying it is a mixture of the both. Sometimes I think it relies on one more heavily than the other, but I think it moves back and fourth.

I would have to say that I am in agreement with the article. It seems very plausable to the Suiko world and ties in much more nicely in a less game-ish type of setting and more of a story type of set ...
