I'm a member at the GameFAQs boards, and the people there keep whining about V's graphics. First of all, I reminded them about all the lighting and shadow effects. But they really complain about the zoomed out look. Now, I'm 99% sure Konami did the camera-style for V to resemble the look of I and II's 2D graphics. But did they actually announce this anywhere? Or is it just something I assumed on my own (and if it is, does it make sense)? Thanks for clearing this up.

I don't know why they would bother whining about the graphics in Suikoden V anyway, they seem pretty alright to me. I guess some people are probably more concerned with that kind of cosmetic appearance than I am, and the zoomed out view is certainly not as good as the cutscene graphics, of course...but yeah, it definitely immitates the look of Suikoden I and Suikoden II. I don't know whether it has been officially stated anywhere, though.

It certainly seems that Konami was taking the game back to its roots in a number of areas, though. The battle system, camera angle, world map, and elements of the storyline are all more like Suikoden I and II than they are anything like III or IV. Obviously, Suikoden Tactics sits in its own category.

The graphics is this game is nothing short of amazing. It's such a huge improvement over Suikoden 4. And plus, the town and dungeons and everything feel like Suikoden 1 and 2 again, but muchhhh better. The character designs are spectacular, probably the best yet in any Suikoden. From the beginning, I was intrigued by the characters. Overall, the graphics in Suikoden aren't disappointing imho. It's beautiful and well-designed.

Suikoden V may not have top of the line graphics, but it's got something very few other games have: an amazing story, more than thirty hours of gameplay (even when you're pushing to get through the game fast), and actual character development. When you focus too much on the visual appearance, other things will, undoubtedly, fall behind (which is what I fear Suikoden IV may have succumbed to) and it's nice to see that Suikoden V didn't fall prey to focusing on graphics instead of the things that matter the most.

That's a good point, too, Alkazar. Focusing on graphics rarely turns out well, you end up with visual symphonies which last for about ten hours of actual gameplay, and not much attention is paid to the storyline. It seems like many games have fallen prey to that since the age of sprite-based graphics ended, and you may well be right about Suikoden IV. Suikoden IV was also the first Suikoden to try voice acting, which may have contributed to the lack of attention paid to other aspects of the game as well.

Suikoden V, on the other hand, is actually a significant improvement to my mind graphically over Suikoden III and IV, and at the same time, a tremendous improvement in the area of storyline and character development. I still haven't finished the game, although I'm not sure how many hours I've really clocked (I'm guilty of leaving my PS2 on whenever it's more convenient not to find a save point).

In all reality, Suikoden has never been known for amazing graphics. Not saying that it had bad graphics, I like the Suikoden V graphics quite a bit actually.
Final Fantasy is known for it's cutscenes though, which are higher definition than the Suikoden ones.
That said however, I don't think that just because the suikoden graphics aren't the highest possible degree of realism, that it makes them any less credible.

I'd take a great story over graphics any day.. plus sometimes it isn't how realistic you can make something look, it's the impact you get from it. Suikoden V rehashes small things that just give off a suikoden feel. I think that in itself will please fans more than insane graphics.
The graphics are an up compared to previous games, the world and characters seem alive, I really don't see why there's any need to complain. I'd rather see Konami spend money on a team of writers who can give us characters and a story we like, rather than a super team of graphical specialists that just make things look pretty.

Does anyone know if Konami actually stated somewhere that the graphics/camera angle are/is supposed to resemble Suikoden I and II?

My biggest problem with Suikoden V's graphics would be the sparse look of the world. Everything seems too spread out, especially in towns. It just looks too generic.

That being said, I found the characters to be very good looking. I thought the cut scenes were excellent, and I especially loved all the facial expressions.

Of course, I've never played a Suikoden game for the graphics, so in the end I find it to be a moot point. At least, in my opinon.

Suikoden is one of those games that never had stunning graphics, instead amazing script and story were those who made this game magical.

So comments like 'bad graphics' mean nothing for Suikoden fans. The thing that bothers me is that konami acctually tried their best to inproove sequences of events thata are like 'important', that's good... but bad thing is that sequences acctually sucked big time...

I was just telling my friend yesterday. ' It would be better if they left out these scens.. cause usually when ur playing Suikoden you don't look at characters on screen, you acctually look at dialogs and reading text .. doing that you somehow predict emotions and movments of characters in your head ... by that ur giving freedome to imagination, and self interpretation does the rest.

The thing in Suikoden 4 and 5 is that cut scenes limited our imagination by showing scens with voice overs that are done so un-smoothly and boring.

IMO they really sholdg get back on 2D ... that's the Suikoden that we know and love ... these experimants after S2 are usually done bad...

( I miss old suikoden... :( )

oh my god the zoomed in outlook isn't good...

Sorry but imho someone who complains about suiko5's graphics is stupid...
That would be the last thing that is important in an rpg...

That can only come from people who play only the Final Fantasy games and think that all rpgs have to look like FF... They don't understand the limitations of games that are coded for consoles..and when i hear someone complaining or comparing FFX or FFXII to Suikoden V...It would be dumb to compare them..you can't easily say square-enix did a better job than konami and so on.. I think that konami was aware of what the ps2 can do and what is possible and what is not possible..The console isn't out for 2 weeks.. there was enough time for konami and other companies to analyze the ps2 and it's power...

Suikoden 5's graphic is more than average and people that keep whining about this are people that don't have any idea of what a good game/rpg is...

especially for suikoden...when suikoden 1 came out everyone scremed: bah..what's that? an snes game? I didn't care about it..i loved the graphics and i miss them. the same thing as suikoden 2 came out...
Than there was suiko 3..everyone said: bah crappy..looks like n64 graphics... than 4.. some said oohh cool the silent hill 4 engine..but it looks to pale and empty... now suiko5...

what is about story, characters, fun in a game? Sure when a game has really bad-ass graphics that will make it unable to play it then it sucks.. but a suikoden? I like the look of suikoden v, i like it more than suiko 3 and 4 graphic.. It looks like a suikoden to me, i get the feeling of playing a suikoden again.. the only mistake konami made was to not include a function to change the camera-ankle

sorry...but i'm really pissed of by people with their mentality of saying a good game can only be good when it has hyper-ultra-impossible-never-seen-before graphics...

I miss that kind of graphics too. That was my first point. You said it yourself Leon. Square really does graphics job better than anybody else, Konami sux on that department esspecially with Suikoden series. and thats why I want to see Suikoden in 2D. Maan, I LOVED that engine :(
It seems to me that Suikoden is dying slowly cause they are trying their best to inproove visuals but they suck constantly. Gameplay and story are suffering cause of that :(

I've beated SV and i hate to say, but i think it's the worst Suikoden yet (and I was so excided seeing those rewiews).

I just couldn't tie myself emotionaly with characters ... 'important' events sucked big time. I would rather prefer if they just left out those events, and made them like the game it self. (like in SII when nanami dies etc.).

SPOILER:
Bad ending, (when ***n dies) was so lame ... I fealt sadness for her like I feel it when I kill monster in encounter battle.

I think for the cut scene graphic i love Suikoden 5 , but for the in game graphic i apparently choose Suikoden 3 .... Why ? Because Suikoden 3 is good detail ( not the character but environment ) and the color greater than 5 !
