How can I get people in my party? (minor spoilers, maybe)

Okay, I was just down to the Beaver village from Yashuna... with only Lyon and Prince. Is it supposed to be this way? I have some recruited characters but no way to put them in my group. The battles are hard with a small group like this. Maybe I just need to advance to a certain point to get to put people in my group?

Yeah, whenever you recruit someone who runs a shop or service you have to talk to them once to hear their spiel. After that they do whatever it is that they do. Armor/skills/sharpen, whatever.
