There are several universities in British Columbia, the ones I can recall off the op of my head are:
UBC - University of British Columbia
UNBC - University of Northern British Columbia
UVic - University of Victoria
SFU - Simon Fraser University
Now, what adds to the confusion is the college I went to for a web design course is called "Kwantlen University College"
The dictionary definitions of "College" and "University" are:
College
n.
a. An institution of higher learning that grants the bachelor's degree in liberal arts or science or both.
b. An undergraduate division or school of a university offering courses and granting degrees in a particular field.
c. A school, sometimes but not always a university, offering special instruction in professional or technical subjects.
d. The building or buildings occupied by such a school or institution.
e. An institution in France for secondary education that is not supported by the state.
University
n.
a. An institution for higher learning with teaching and research facilities constituting a graduate school and professional schools that award master's degrees and doctorates and an undergraduate division that awards bachelor's degrees.
b. The buildings and grounds of such an institution.
They both appear to mean the same thing, except it appears that a university could be considered the "high school" to a college's "elementary school." I've been to UBC several times, not as a student, of course, but it is huge in comparison to the other institutions I've been to, like a small municipality. It's the only university in the Lower Mainland which I know of that has a dormitory.
I know I won't ever attend a full-time University, though I do plan on taking another course in web design within the next year or two, which will hopefully lead to a better job upon completion. _________________

In Britain a college is part of a larger university.
Oxford and Cambridge have multiple colleges each, and every student belongs to a college aswell as the university. It's like lots of separate schools under the umbrella of the larger universtiy, if that makes any sense.
If anyone's read Harry Potter, they have Houses in their school, it's the same thing. |

Do they arrange Houses for secondary school in Great Britain? Here, in my middle & high school, they do that arrangement with Five Colour Houses: Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple.
By the way, determination and motivation should be the two of necessary attitudes students in college/university should have in order to be successful in school. That is to say, if you love school and will do anything for good marks, then you will get what you expect at school.
So good luck to your post-secondary education. |

^^; Such thoughts about the differences between two words commonly used among the freshly opened.
I don't know, here in college I'm DEFINITELY set apart from the majority of people here. Let's forget interests for a moment - just in general the subject I'm taking. I just say the name and people twitch at me. Always, same thing!
Person: Hey, what major are you taking?
Jenn: Physics
Person: *Eye spasm*
:? Anyone get similar reactions in college? Most of these twitchy people tell me they're either premed, business or psychology majors. ;P There's a variety. _________________

Yes we are arranged in houses in my secondary school, but I thought it best not to bring that up incase people got confused. Where I live the houses take names from the surrounding localities: Clandeboye, Castlereagh, Scrabo and Strandford.
Each house has its own colour aswell, which are respectively yellow, black, green and blue.
The only difference between these and university colleges is that you would be put into a house at random and basically they are all the same, whereas you would choose your own college at university, but each college would have its own advantages and disadvantages, ie one college could be excellent at the arts but crap at the sciences. |

Thanks for all the definitions. I think "college"(in the US) would roughly correspond to what we in Norway confusingly call "High Schools". A High School in Norway is a sort of smaller regional insititution which offers university-level education in select subjects. They`re usually located far from the large cities with the proper universities. The British definition of college sounds like what we call a "fakultet" here. That is, a part of a university specializing in a certain subject.

Nice to see a fellow HP reader! It`s one of my favourite book series. :)
Anyway, we have nothing resembling a house system in schools here...[/quote] _________________

I have managed to survive Freshman year of college...
my advice to you
DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE CLASSES AND THE WORKLOAD
tons of freshmen do that and I personally saw so many people dropping out of college like pebbles thrown into the sea... _________________

Oooh yeah, this is my first week of freshman year and I ALMOST underestimated my classes and workloads... ;P In fact the only reason I'm getting my priorities straightened now is because I talked to the academic assistant here and she was talking about how much work she has to do 'cause she's taking so many credits (20) now. So I mentioned I'm taking 18 and we had a little chat about that.... Arrgh....
Then she told me to stop going to my professor's calc class and to audit somewhere because my professor isn't good at teaching... And from what I've seen it's damned TRUE. x_x _________________

Gwendal, something tells me that "fakultet" means the same as "faculty" which is the word we use for a departmant overseeing one group of subject, for example the arts, engineering, business etc.
It's slightly different again from a college, but now it's just getting confusing.... |

Yes, that`s totally correct! But I thought "faculty" was the term for the people staffing a school or university... _________________
