Whom do you think should be the 2008 Democratic nominee for President of the United States? This is a discussion, as well as a poll, so please post with your vote.

Obviously, this topic will generate significant debate. Please keep all discussion constructive and above all, civil.

If you take issue with any of the poll options, please say so, and give suggestions for improving the poll. Obviously, I can't tell if any of these people are in fact going to run.

I am not a big politics guy, but i do like John Edwards. He may not have that much experience, but i think the democratic party needs a charismatic canidate. The only other thing i have to say is that i hope it is anyone besides Hillary Clinton. I don't feel like giving my reasoning other than that i don't like her and that is my opinion.

I'm a Clark fan, myself. He's generally a sensible person, and his positions on the issues are relatively close to mine, with a few exceptions.

I don't think Hillary Clinton should be the nominee. Not only do I have major doubts about her ability to win (not because she's a woman, but because she's extremely uncharismatic and has a history of bombardment by the Republicans), I take issue with some her foreign policy stances. If she does get the nomination, though, I will probably support her.

I think Hilary will get the nomination because the Democrats are all about womens rights and "equality" but I pray she doesn't take office especially after our affairs with Iraq. Having to negotiate with a woman doesn't seem like the best plan when dealing with a culture that women are commonly viewed much less liberally. It just doesn't seem like she's the best choice to go with if we plan to continue to coddle Iraq. Regardless I don't think she's going to make a good president but I think she will get the nomination. The only redeeming thing about Hilary is that she'll get Bill back in office where he belongs.

Ah, Hillary. I highly doubt she will be put up as the democratic nominee for one reason alone. She would never get elected. Though I am all for women's rights and if she were nominated, I'd vote for her, I realize she won't get elected. There are way too many sexist people in the country for that to happen. Many democrats wouldn't vote for her because there are many with the belief that women belong at home, raising the kinds. Not all of those people are male, even. There are many women out there who think that this sort of thing should be left for the men. I honestly would love a female president, and would support Hillary as the democratic nominee if people were not so pig-headed and she stood a chance of winning. The main reason a female president would be best, in my opinion, is because females are, as a rule, less agressive than men and more compassionate. These are important qualities to have. Women generally are less egotistical as well. Erm, better not continue this as it isn't really too much on topic, but I had to say it.

So, while I think she would be a very good president, I don't want her to be the nominee because she wouldn't win. We shouldn't throw the election away when we know she wouldn't win. She's got a fine position right now and I think she realizes she's good where she's at.

The way I see it, Hillary Clinton was our president for 8 years already and those 8 years were 8 of the best years this country has had in a long time. So, I stand behind my Senator all the way. Hillary Clinton has charisma, a get the job done, in your face because she's motiated to do so attitude that I feel a president needs. I think one of the nations biggest problems with Georgie Boy in office now is that he's a lazy liar who doesn't seem to have his light on in the attic. Hillary comes of as a very intellectual person who has proven herself, not only as the first lady, but as the senator here in New York that she gets the job done. Nobody can ever say to her that she's innefective as a politician.

If theres any reason that anyone else gets the nomination over her it is because she is a woman. Nobody will ever formally say it but there are far too many macho Scovenist scumbags who feel a woman as a president would be a travesty. Now I for one feel that if a woman proves that she can run our nation, we should respect that and give her an opportunity.

Also, looking at that list there's a serious lack in decent opposition in my opinion. John Edwards is the only other candidate there I could say I would support. And he's a bit flaky. John Kerry had his shot and blew it. Al Gore has gone to the looney bin and Wesley Clark seems to be decent but until more is known about him and his platform I can't say. Also since none of these people have even made mention of wanting to be president, why are they on the list? Where is Rev. Al Sharpton? *laugh*

This is kind of early for this talk anyhow. Not until later this year will this thread actually mean anything. But if Hilary throws her hat in the ring for the presidential nod, I will support her all the way to the polls, where I will try and sway voters for her, since I can't vote. Stupid me.

I like Wesley Clark, and was hoping he'd receive the nomination last time.

Hillary is also a good candidate; she has a pretty extensive political record, and is very good at consensus-making. That ability has been severely lacking in the current administration.

Kucinich was blown off as a candidate in the last election (probably because he isn't too charismatic), but his platform was probably the best out of any of the dems. Too bad people didn't really listen to what he had to say.

I think it would be a mistake to run Hilary. The right wing couple spear her and roast her over a stick. They've got a good attack machine - better than the dems have ever had. They'd crucify her, and it would be John Kerry ALL OVER AGAIN. (And considering once again, this is the Dems office to lose...) Even the staunchest dems I know don't want her to run because they don't think she'll win. (And I say this as someone whose voted mostly democrat in national politics from IL, though I'm more of a political moderate with slight leanings towards socialism.)

But personally? I liked Dennis Kucinich, but like SARSadmin says, boy ain't got no pretty genes, and every time he talks he sounds like he's reading off a cue card. Got a good platform, though - no privitization of social security, pro-instant run-off voting, and abolishing the death penalty - I would get behind him, but he'd be like Gore - smart guy, good platform....But not enough personality to get people to remember him.

I think John Edwards has a chance. Young, fairly pretty, and charismatic; he's got more "Kennedyesque" creed than John Kerry every did (He was the worst candidate to run. WHY DID YOU VOTE FOR HIM, IOWA AND NEW HAMSPIRE?). Especially if he picks someone experienced for veep - Clark, perhaps.

But who I really want to run? Barack Obama. He's a great speaker, charismatic, good looking, and a youthful alternative to the Republican runner, who will probably be older (Frisk/McCain/etc. are all older looking gents). He practically came to the senate with a national platform, so...I think he could have a chance.

I'd vote for him, anyway. :)

I think that's going a tad far. While there are certainly lots of sexists in America, there are many people who, like myself, see Al Gore and Wesley Clark as better candidates.

What exactly do you mean? Since the 2000 election, he's become more vocal, more charismatic, and all around a better candidate. And think of the symbolism his campaign could draw. Who better to pull us out of the horrible Bush years than the man who Bush stole the presidency from in the first place?

This isn't an endorsement of Gore's candidacy at all, though; I'm still soldily behind General Clark.

While I agree that Kucinich had what was the best platform, I didn't include him in the poll, because, barring an event that would drastically change the political climate in America, he doesn't have the slightest chance at the nomination.

He's too young. And by 2008, he'll have served two-thirds of a term in the Senate. I'd wait until 2016 for him to run, maybe 2012 if the Democrats mange to blow this election.

He's definitely got all the hallmarks of the next rising star for the Democrats. Intelligent, charismatic, and a good public speaker. He's also got the minority angle, but I'd probably vote for him even if he were purple with pink polka dots. OK, maybe not, but the guy is very promising and I hope to see more of him in the future. I do agree with Camus that his time probably has not yet arrived, but I hope he continues on because I've been very impressed since I heard about him from my bleeding heart Democrat of a friend.

The first thought when I saw this thread was actually "Yeah, I suppose a lot of gamers in the US are probably Democrats." That's based off of my experiences with gamers here on the West Coast, however, so I was a little curious as to the reaction on a wider basis.

It certainly seems so, as this topic has attracted more Democrats/liberal-leaners than the Republican thread has Republicans.

I would say that either Clark or Hillary would run and be good Dem canadiates.
Calrk of ocurse because he has foreign military experince which would benefit foriegn diplomatic meetings and all that. He also has a sensibility about him that would transfer into his decisions for domestic issues around the country and him being a moderate would be lienient on issues like abortion.

Hillary I think has said before she would'nt run in 2008, but who knows; she might make up her mind. I think what she's got going for her is name reconigiton as seeing how alot of people like and continue to support Bill Clinton to this day (me being one of them, he was a kick-ass president). It's a doulbe-sword however because like you all have said, the republicans will roast her because she's Clinton's wife. Other than that she has a good sense of politics and is really IMO an ideal for a woman president.

Edit: I'm with Sophita as well, Barack Obama is a star in the Dem party. Ever since his speech at the DNC, he shown that he has alot of politics to attarct a wide fanbase for him.

You know who I would like to see win. A candidate that cares about all the people of this country, and doesn't bow to big business, and foriegn pressure. I understand that they are important, but the "middle class" can no longer exsist. We are becoming a nation of rich or poor. I really want a candidate that I vote for NOT because they are the lesser of 2 evils, but because I really want them to win, and agree with where they stand. Voter turn out has gotten worse, and worse because no one really likes the candidate.
