Only had four classes this semester, but two of them were probably very poor choices on my part.

HIST 109: Modern (East) Asia - A
I'll start out with the good class. This was a survey class covering China, Japan, and Korea from roughly the 1800s up through today. The professor specializes in China so we spent most time on China, but unlike other professors, it was not 90% China and 10% everyone else. I'd say over half the class was on China specifically, but it wasn't a lot. Maybe 60%. There was another history professor who spent 15 of the 16 weeks on China, 1 week on Japan, and 15 minutes on Korea every now and then. Very interesting lectures and discussion classes. There was a variety of media. We had a weekly optional Japanese, Chinese, or Korean film available. We used movies, music, and art as historical sources and we made history complicated. Was Mao Zedong really a bad guy? What really happened at Nanjing? What is "Japanese" or "Chinese" or even "eastern" and "western?" If nothing else, I learned not to take everything I read or see as the Truth. Plus, the professor was hot.

MLJ 315: Intro to Japanese Literature - B
This course was not that bad. The professor was sick the first day so we had no class and then after the second day, she resigned. Her class set up was way too complicated and I would have been writing essays every week with two huge papers due during the semester. After she resigned, the head of the History and Philosophy department here stepped in as a favor to her and took over the class. He's a Japan historian, not a literature professor, and being head of the department, he is extremely busy. So he cut out all of the extra crap that was in the class. We had two papers, a final paper (which he made a history paper), and we had to lead at least one class discussion. It basically was a seminar class. I learned a lot more about Japanese history and philosophy than I feel I did about literature in general, but it was fun most of the time. He is a great professor and very smart. He is a very hard grader though. If the original professor had stayed, I would have probably had an A.

PHYS 441: Solid State Physics - B
I should have never taken this course. The professor was atrocious. First of all, her English was horrid, at best. I do not know where she learned English grammar, but she should get a refund. She had a thick Russian accent too, which combined with her attempts at English made it hard to figure out what she was saying. Her lectures were ripped straight from the book, but she even managed to screw that up. She didn't understand English either. She answered what she thought our questions were, but she was rarely correct in what she thought we were asking. After a test or quiz, she would make you stay while she looked it over and she would tell you what you should check and what she thought was correct. Every time she checked mine, she told me to re-check the ones I got right and that the ones I got wrong were correct. I quit paying attention after the first exam and just practiced my Japanese on the lecture handouts she gave us. I have no idea why I didn't get an A though. All of the homework was taken from our text book and there were full solutions in the back, not only answers. I copied them after I gave up on the class. Also, I scored a high B on the midterm and we got to use the book and notes on the final (three of the four questions were word-for-word from examples in her lectures). Crazy woman. >_>

MATH 333: Linear Algebra - B
I know why I got a B in here. I cannot prove anything. I care not for proving things. I am a practical math kind of guy. I do not care that 0 = 0 at the end of the day. I want to know how to use these theories. I want to know applications. I want to work with actual numbers at some point. But not this professor. He is a straight up theoretical mathematician. It's all about proofs and theories. Numbers are scary. Applications should be avoided at all costs. I gave up on this class too pretty much. So much of it was just proving theories that I didn't really learn how to do anything except prove theories...and I'm not all that good at that. You know what? If you have a phd in math, I'll believe you and the author of the textbook if you say that 0 = 0. (You may think I'm joking, but we actually proved that in the class) Anyway, I got good enough grades on the homework, but the exams were at least half full of proofs so I did not always do that well on them.

Judging by the fact that I'm horribly lazy, this is amazing:

Adv. Algebra - A (98)
Physics - A (98)
Economics - A (98)
History of Philippine Literature - A (97)
Human Anatomy & Physiology - B (91)
English Literature - B (88)

The numbers are what the grades would be if it was numerical, I don't know why they have that. :P

I didn't learn anything new from the first two subjects, so I'll skip that. Economics was taught by the same guy who taught my Philippine History (different from the one above) class 3 years ago, so I know him. Phil. Lit. thing is taught by the same guy who taught me last year, it's no surprise really.

I'm very surprised with the Anatomy grade. I screwed up my choice and accidentally checked that instead of Accounting (yeah, holy crap >_>), so now I have no choice but to take it. The funny thing is I'm not taking anything related to medicine. The subject is extremely brutal and is less on theory, more on application, stuff like:

*You are shot by a bullet which enters the left side of your body, and lodges into your heart. With regards to the lung and heart, state the order of coverings (parietal/visceral pleura and stuff) that it would pass through.

*A doctors finds that her female patient has granulation cells in her vaginal canal. What happens?

Oh and don't ask me the answer, I don't know either. :P Moving on, I think I got that high because of the final exam. I was only one of 4 people to scrape at least 80%, yeah, it was that brutal. And I did the project thing really well, you're supposed to pick some disease and make a flyer about it that informs people what it really is. I did Cat Scratch Fever with the reasoning that it's extremely common, and apparently I got the idea right. Weird, I know. O_o

And I'm not going to even question the English grade. Deserved it, since I only studied a third of the literary piece. How am I supposed to know that "Study Oedipus" means studying the whole damn thing and not just Oedipus the King? Also forgot to study about the life of Paul Lawrence Dunham, or some guy along that name. XD

My grades at the end of last year were pretty pleasing.

AP English Composition - A (96)
Physics - B+ (91)
AP United States History - B+ (92)
Wind Ensemble - A (100)
Latin 3 - A (95)
Precalculus - A (96)

Also, because of the fact that I was taking two college courses, they modify my GPA to include a bonus 0.5 in the total before division, so my total GPA for last year was a 4.0, which I was pretty shocked by.

I also had a free period, pretty much, in which I got an automatic A in, so I didn't include that. >_>

Sage will know my Physics score, considering he (tried) to help me understand the material many times.

I remember those times. Aww, wave functions...anyway.

Last spring's grades for me were as follows.

Japanese Popular Culture - A
Pretty easy class. It was very informal and the professor quite laid back. We had to do online postings, which as long as they were done we got full credit, and we had to talk in class. Then we had a final paper and a doujinshi project. Of course, she wouldn't let us do an erotic one; it had to be about the class. We covered a wide range of topics from manga/anime (and otaku) to Japanese music to theater, movies and novels to sports, fashion, and the internet. However, sex was a common theme. We looked at gender-bending in Takarazuka (an all female revue), looked at (quite literally) yaoi & child porn manga in addition to the regular pornographic manga, went to 4chan during class, and sex somehow came up in just about every other topic. Still fun though.

Science and Technology in World History - A
History (and Philosophy) of Science is a more common name. Not a "In 1938, Einstein invented electricity" kind of stuff. We looked at technological developments and the history, sociology, and philosophy around them. Sometimes, we just looked at reactions to science, as opposed to science itself. We looked a lot at medicine from Greece, Rome, China, and Persia, then at alcohol, fairies, mad cow, SARS, Wonder Woman, crimes, Chernobyl, and the Tokyo gas attacks, to name a few things.

Creatures: Art & Biology - A-
Like the above course, but on steroids since it was an upper division course. It was an entirely online course with optional in-person meetings and was taught by the same prof as the above course. We followed the same outline as above, but focused on art and the life sciences. Medicine was a big topic here, though mostly about dissection. It was a much more varied class. Other topics included wonder, museums, reactionary art, artificial life & intelligence, photography, and artificial environments.

Philosophies of Asia - A-
This was basically Indian Philosophy, because that is what the professor knew. I had no problem with that, as I kind of like philosophy. We looked at a lot of Hindu factions, Jainism, Carvaka, and ended up with Buddhism. The professor would sometimes quote parts in Sanskrit. I like languages, so that was really entertaining. Plus, the professor was just fun in general, if a little hard to understand at times.

My overall undergraduate GPA was 3.5 after five years of math, physics, Japanese, and an assortment of other classes.

I just finished up nine months worth of co-op: three at Apple and six at IBM, so the only grade I've gotten recently is S. Back to classes now and it's just weird going back. :|

I'm taking:

University Physics I (Finally!)
iPhone Development Seminar
Computer Architecture
