[Phase 5] Scarlet Moon vs Tinto at Lion's Maw [Concluded]

A band of assassins approached the residence of Tinto President iscalio. Led by ThAngelicSin, Alkazar, and Kornholio, these men were trying to end the war fast by taking out the enemy leader in a daring attempt at his life. They were so far successful in infiltrating Lion's Maw, and only a wide path had to be crossed before they could reach their quarry.

One by one, the assassins crossed the path in an attempt to hide from detection. However, one of the assassins tripped and slammed into a barrel, which ended up rolling down an incline only to smash against a row of spears, which collapsed and made a thunderous noise.

"Who goes there!?" A voice suddenly stopped the assassins.

In the dark, they saw numerous cavalry, already surrounding them.

Viktor and Doso proceeded forward, Viktor pointed his spear at one of the assassins, "surrender or die." However, Kornholio immediately sprung to escape, along with TheAngelicSin and Alkazar. Seeing this as aggression, Tinto cavalrymen attacked the assassins; all of them were killed in the process. However, the three leaders managed to survive the attack, fleeing to the main camp.

Tinto wins this turn!

When one travels across the Lampdragon Mountains, they can finally get a glimpse of the barren earth that makes up the whole of Tinto proper. Surrounded in all sides by mountains, this area rarely every faced foreign aggression. However, that didn't mean Tinto was unprepared; a system of fortresses protected Tinto City from a direct attack. The Lion's Maw is one such location: two fortresses located across each other on both sides of a narrow valley. The concept was simple; the two fortresses will aid each other when attacked. An enemy attacking one fort will expose their rear to the other fortress and vice-versa--unless there is an overwhelming number of enemy troops.

This was exactly what was happening at Tinto this day; Scarlet Moon Empire's force numbering over 150000 was pushing against Lion's Maw, ready to take it by force. Leading this force was Emperor Kornholio himself with his elite crossbowmen, and a massive contingent of imperial spearmen led by Himuro followed--the valley was filled with the glimmer of their awl pikes.

Kornholio ordered his regiment to attack the southern fortress. 60000 crossbowmen launched their bolts against the fortress in an attempt to subdue their enemies hidden inside. However, after they launched their volley, the gates to the fortress burst open, and out came a charging Doso and 32827 of his cavalrymen. Unable to reload before the cavalrymen reached them, the crossbowmen under Kornholio allowed the cavalry to penetrate into their ranks. The crossbowmen were easy prey for the cavalrymen, and one after another fell to the blades of their mounted menace. However, thanks to their vast number, the crossbowmen started firing back, resulting in a tidal-wave of crossbow bolts. Having nothing to protect them against these powerful projectiles, cavalrymen fell by droves, resulting in the complete annihilation of Doso's cavalry. 21885 crossbowmen also lay dead on the incline that led to the fortress.

As Kornholio looked proudly at his crossbowmen for fighting off the cavalry, he heard news that King Jarret's infantry failed their attack against the northern fortress. Realizing that he must act fast, Kornholio ordered Himuro's 80000 spearmen to lead a do-or-die attack against the southern fortress.

On top of the southern fortress, iscalio was gazing down at the Scarlet Moon soldiers, "They are coming" he said as he stroked his beard.

He then looked back towards his men waiting for his orders, "Men of Tinto, this is your day; our day. We must defend this fort. If we lose this fort, the enemy can march right into Tinto City, let alone Crom. This is our last front to protect our family. Warriors born of the barren rocks of Tinto, show me what you are truly made of!"

His elite troops and home guards all cheered with their bows raised high, and the battle started. 80000 spearmen rushed towards the fort, attempting to climb the walls with ladders. Tinto's archers under iscalio, numbering 20367, defended the walls like a thing possessed. Archers continuously rained a hail of arrows down at Himuro's spearmen. Some of Himuro's men managed to climb over the walls, but were quickly put down by archers. The battle raged on for hours, and the archers eventually started to wear out from the strain. However, the thought of losing their homeland kept them fighting.

As he encouraged his troops in the ramparts, Iscalio saw Himuro among the enemies below. Narrowing his eyes as he drew his well-worn bow, the Mountain Fox unleashed a well-aimed arrow. "Thud!" he heard the sound clearly as his arrow landed into the shoulder of Himuro. Himuro gasped, and spearmen around him rushed to help him.

Soon, the spearmen started to retreat, realizing that the resolve of Tinto can not be broken. Seeing that the battle was lost, Kornholio ordered all of his forces to retreat to Lampdragon Pass.

Meanwhile, only a fraction of the original royal guards and home guard remained standing, if even alive. However, they all knew that even if they would have died, they can become one with the land they love and gave their lives to protect.

Tinto Republic wins this turn and successfully defends Lion's Maw!!

It all came down to 637 soldiers? Gripping. Well, it would have been more gripping if the [Concluded] tag hadn't given it away.

Wow, that was a nailbiter. I can't believe it came down to so few soldiers.
