Don't forget Kyaro! Or if you aren't, then don't forget Sajah! Or if you are remembering both of these, then perhaps L'Renouille will actually have it's housing sector available to the public this time.

Actually forgot Sajah cause it seemed like a total hole of a place, oops on my part for that.

Completely understandable, it looked like it was added as an after thought for the Clive side quest anyway. It had 2 or 3 buildings and a lamb...

In addition to all that I said in the post below, I also need to take into consideration the very real possibility that the series is dead. Thus, after developing all the scripts necessary to simulate Dunan, I'm hoping to "steal" the whole "merging of worlds" concerpt from Tierkreis, and allow the addition of poritions of worlds from completely different games (or perhaps not even games). For example, if enough people want it, a piece from the world of FF7 might be added or something (yeah, bad example). Is this a bad idea? I'd like to make sure there's some way for the community to continue attracting new members while old members can continue to be entertained with new stuff.

Vextor wrote:
Based on taking a closer look at our database, it seems like we have all the old stuff still in there without any real changaes made to the architecture. Thus, it'd probably be best to just plug phpbb2 into the current location. It may even be better to simply upload the most recent suikox modification of phpbb2 and start working from there, which would be strange.

Based on thinking things through, here's my current vision on the new game:

1) Focused on the Dunan region including Highland: Characters will be born in one of the towns automatically, but are generally free to roam around. I'll get rid of the whole "nationality" feature. Moving from one city / town to another will take RL time. This doesn't mean other parts of the world won't exist, but I haven't really thought of how the rest of the world wiull figure into the game yet.

2) Less battle and focused on "immersion": Instead of killing each other, the aim is to give people how it feels like to live in the Suikoden world. Each person can have their own goals, such as becoming a rich merchant, a famous adademic, or being a spiky-haired dual sword-wielding travelling swordsman with a angtsy past that we all want to be. Location will have a huge influence because you won't have much luck pursuing your academic dream if you're in Toto all your life, nor will you have buch luck being a trader if you don't move around.

3) User-initiated cooperation: Instead of having a system where you're tossed into a group who you have to work with even if you hate them, you can form your own clique as you please. If you're a trader, you might want to hire a body guard before traveling afar lest you get jumped by some bandit or monster. You might form your own leather worker's guild in Muse, or perhaps you'll be boring and uncreative by forming a mercenary group.

4) Skill system: I'm borrowing the idea from Eve Online, where you get to train you skill based on elapsed time. For exampls, the skill "Diplomacy" might take only 30 minutes to take to proficiency level 1, but will take 4 hours for level 2, etc. To be an expert diplomat you might have to stop trying to be a powerful swordsman. This also means yoyu may need to make friends to accomplish some sort of goal.

5) Periodic GM-initiated events: The GM (me) will periodically cause some sort of event (mostly calamities) to make life interesting for the players.

Here's sort of how things can play out:

I'm a character based on Kyaro, and have my "Foraging" skill trained to level 3. I decide to move my character to the Rood Forest and forage stuff I can sell. Moving from Kyaro to Rood takes 2 hours RL time, so I submit that command and do other stuff for two hours. After getting to Rood I command my character to start foraging and go to sleep. With Foraging level 3, my character is already at maximum carrying capacity with a collection of 423 holly berries, 118 medical herbs, 26 nightshades, and 3 logs (or something). You take this back to Kyaro (another two hours) and put it on the market there. Another character who's looking for logs to make spears from will buy the logs, and you end up making money.

I have special ideas for Greenhill (academy) and Muse (center of politics), but I haven't really thought of it in detail, so any ideas are welcome.

The quoted part sounds kind of complicated, but definitely interesting.

Considering that we have to face a possible (or even likely) end of the series, the Tierkreis idea may be necessary and perhaps very good eventually, but I am not keen on the concept of adding stuff from other series, actually.

Anything to keep the love alive is a good idea in my mind. Also I for one get in a mood to replay old rpg's a couple times a year and it's not just suikoden it is FF7 and FF4 and FFT and Frontier Saga etc. So having some optional places or things from other world might be cool and would certainly likely be an additional draw.

I think it's a good idea. Its simple economics really; without the addition of new games, Suikoden's fanbase will continue the slow deterioration that has already begun.

Personally I'd love to see some Fire Emblem stuff thrown in there...speaking of which, how would you plan to incorporate these different worlds? Would you be incorporating gameplay elements from these worlds, or simply using the settings and characters? Also, what about various races that may be unique to these other worlds?

I wouldn't be against throwing in new content from other games, or movies.. Expanding the fan base available to the site may not be a bad idea--especially since it's already dwindling as it is.

The quoted stuff sounds really cool! It does sound complex--but I hope it's not too much to work on in your spare time. So long as it's fun. :)

I haven't thought about how to integrate different worlds, but there probably would be certain settings that are completely incompatible.

Fire Emblem sounds like a world that can be integrated with little or no problem, but other settings such as Star Wars would be fairly hard because it'll introduce ideas and mechanics that are incompatible (or require a lot of work to make them compatible).

I'm also thinking whether people should be able to have multiple characters, instead of their "character" being tied to their account.

Having multiple characters would certainly be a way of keeping things fresh for each player--however I do end up fearing that there may end up being too many different characters. Characters that people decide to create and then stop using, or create a new one, and then forget about their old ones. I guess my fear is that things may get cluttered with potentially un or underused characters. There are ways to remedy that, though, I suppose--setting limits with numbers of active characters allowed, for example, maybe.

In terms of Suikoden, I would simply cheat and blame stuff on the Sindar. (maybe even Cinder, he doesn't seem to mind taking blame... so long as he can have his revenge) since you can bullshit (within reason) exotic technologies as the Sindar aren't around to contradict what is made up.

Without getting into specifics in an open forum, I have devised a way to incorporate Suikoden with another (albeit specific) world, albeit keeping them unique entities instead of mashing them together. It seems perfectly plausible to me, since if there can be a rune cannon which turns its victims into fish sticks, then this type of co-existence is perfectly acceptable.

I think that's entirely fair. Who knows. Maybe you can end up wrangling over some other RPGers who will then play the original Suikoen games and further give popularity to the series.

I certainly like the idea. I am just worried it will cause you to become overloaded again and eventually have to shut it down. I think whatever you have in mind needs to be minimally "Vex" run. Not because what you do isn't great, but more because of how time consuming and stressful it can become.
