Konami confirmed that they're gonna release a new Pachinko game based on Genso Suikoden.

For those of you who don't know, Pachinko is a very popular slot machine gambling method in Japan, and you see pachinko parlors everywhere, especially in low income areas. Konami has been increasing their stake in gambling-related business across the world, and they have been supplying new pachinko machines to the market for a while.

In this case, they're developing pachinko slot machines with a suikoden game included within. Yes, another Suikoden game that has nothing to do with the main series! Yay! (/sarcasm)

Along with how they recently started some cell phone-based collecting cards with new character art, it seems Konami is hell-bent on doing everything within their power to keep the Suikoden franchise alive without actually continuing the main series.

In the case of pachinko, it can end up leading to capturing new clientelle. The same happened when a "Fist of the North Star" pachinko game was released a few years back-- a bunch of middle-aged to retired age folks suddenly became interested in the series and the entire Fist of the North Star series (which has finished) has been revisited and revitalized, with numerous spin-offs created as a result. Perhaps Suikoden can face the same fate.

However, the odd thing is Konami chose Suikoden IV as the backdrop for their pachinko game. Yes, the most unpopular Suikoden installation of all times! What are they thinking? If I were them, I'd base it on Suikoden 2, but oh well, Konami is known for strange marketing decisions so nothing new there.

Well... IV was the least popular, but also the highest selling right? Businesses, man. Dollar bills. P.S. the series is still dead probably.

I actually think they picked the "least popular" on purpose.

Why "advertise" for an installment that's already popular?

But I would LOVE to see a photo of this. Is this game findable everywhere or just in some chosen, eh, pachinko places?

No one's complaining that they are (ab)using Suikoden II motifs for their card collecting mobile phone "game", so I'm not surprised that they are diversifying their attention to the different installments in the series. Suikoden V is also getting plenty of attention with their on-going manga serialisation.

In retrospect, it is a positive sign that they have put aside Tierkreis and returned to the main series.

I suppose its a good thing. They could easily have chosen to use the machines to promote newer series, although if they turned out to be really unpopular then they would be stuck with unpopular machines.

Also their choice of Suikoden IV could be a good thing. If someone actually does check out the series they can be pleasantly surprised that there even better games of the series out there!

This is great news. Although I'll never play the machine much less see it, it keeps hope alive that somehow we will see another central story game in the U.S. Come on, Konami! Drop two or three more games. I'll even pre-order mine right now for $500 and u can use that to make Suikoden VI!

I find myself feeling dispassionate about this news, which is contrary to what I've felt about Suikoden titles in the past--even Japanese-only ones like the Suikogaidens. I think part of me agrees with archpark; if Suikoden isn't dead, it certainly is very close, at least in my mind.

I've thought about it a little bit, and about the reasons I so love this series. It had to do mostly with its story and its unique gameplay that was entwined with it. It also had to do with the continuity of the world as sequels were released. Without those things I have little interest in Suikoden--standalone Suikoden games, to me, would merely be average. On its own, a game like Tiekreis does not stack up to a lot of the better RPGs.

Basically what Konami has done is create a long, sweeping narrative ala Harry Potter, but than not release the equivalent of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

I live in Sault Ste Marie Ontario which is one of the most isolated major cities of Canada I have only shared Suikoden with a select few who were interested.

The closest thing currently to a Suikoden product being introduced in my town was when I convinced the library to purchase the entire Suikoden 3 Manga volume collection for the community to share in our main library branch; other then that we are able to ask one of two EB games outlets if we want to purchase Suikoden Tierkries (Which is a game I approve of under certain conditions).

As far as these slot machines go then it is capitalism working at it's best, personally it is a lot more preferable then a nationalist socialist party making Suikoden popular to promote themselves.

Thank you

Ryan.
