Tierkreis = musical theme, Rhapsody = musical theme. There is a very strong chance this will be a followup to Suikoden Tactics. I really hope not though, unless it's a very radical rethinking of the concept. I'd rather have a new gameplay style.

It was called Rhapsodia.

He's probably referring to Stockhausen's musical composition of the same name (Uh, Tierkreis, not Rhapsodia).

Regardless of whether or not this is a new game or something, I still take this as a sign that the series is not dead. I know a lot of people have stated the series as dead by now, but we should at least wait until TGS this year (or even next year).

I just hope that it's a game at all. Spin-off or Suikoden "VI," it doesn't matter to me. I just want something new to play with the title "Suikoden" on it...

This.

In a situation like this, beggars can't be choosers. As for the name, I'm going to guess it's indicating a Rhapsodia styled spinoff (not necessarily sRPG) based possibly on the Howling Voice Guild. Despite the Suikogaiden giving alot of insight into the Guild, there's still plenty they could do with it story-wise, introducing new characters etc. Then again it's just as likely to be a neutral name with little to no genuine significance.

On another note, has Konami ever trademarked a name they never used? Almost every article I've read on this mentions Chrono Break as an example (the best known), but if memory serves that was only primarily shelved because the Chrono developers split with SE and at the time SE were concentrating on Final Fantasy XI (ie, long term profit).

Konami is pretty notorious (at least in Japan) for making many many trademark claims, which don't ever get used.

Didn't Square also trademark "Chrono Break" (or something similar) quite a while back, causing quite a buzz that another Chrono game was in the works?

Do they do this in the States also?

Yes and yes, to both of you. All mentioned in my delicious original news post at the site.

In regards to Konami's trademark hogging: This seems to be only a Japanese issue. In America, Konami seem to register the bare minimum needed to cover their bases. Their American Suikoden copyrights are as follows: Suikoden (original TM), Suikoden (updated TM), Suikoden (latest TM), Suikoden Tactics, Suikoden Tierkreis.

In regards to Chrono Break: Yes, in 2001, and it was a huge deal and everyone got terribly excited until Square-Enix squashed people's hopes. The trademark was dropped in 2003.

I have no idea how Konami does things in the USA. Look at their trademark claims in the US trademark office and see for yourself I guess. I looked though it but I just don't know enough about Konami to know if they actually used most of their trademarks, such as "Treasures of Rapa Nui" and all that jazz (sounds like casino software).

Everyone brings up Chrono Break and says patents are bad signs, but it's not always the case. Just a few months ago, this is how we learned about DQIV - VI DS being released here before announcing them.

I am not fond of all this "it's gonna come!" or "it's not gonna come!" speculation we go through every two months. :P However, the recent actions give us more to go on than usual at least.

I didn't say patents are a bad sign because of the Chrono Break thing, it was just a comparison using the most commonly known example I could think of.

However, just because something is trademarked doesn't mean such a product will materialize in the near future. For all we know, Konami could just be starting development on a title which will eventually take that name and could still be years off.

With that said, given how much I enjoy Suikoden, I sure as hell hope the "Suikoden Tierkreis" trademark is not a bad sign.

I'm very glad to hear this news. At the very least, it gives us the idea that Konami is not completely thrashing the Suikoden series, since they did go through the effort of Trademarking the name. This indeed gives me great hope, though I'm definitely scared of being disappointed.
