YAY!!!!!!!! Kohlschreiber!!!!! <3 <3 I could only watch the first part of the second set, then I had to go to an appointment but came back in time at 7-6 for Kohlschreiber in the fifth set, so I could watch live when he won the match some minutes ago! I was hoping sooo much that he could defeat Roddick, too bad that I couldn't watch the whole match but maybe they show it again in TV this evening. What a result! :D

Aurelien, I am not that insane over Andy Roddick. Yes, he is my favourite tennis player and I do like him but $1000 for his signature. Hell no! I'm not even that big of a fan of tennis, although I do enjoy watching it occasionally.

On the other hand, I am so sad Roddick lost. Oh, and ViktorFan dislikes Roger Federer, and I must say I agree.. (in terms of his looks anyway).

Oh wow, big win for the young German player. Must have been a hell of a match, I'm sure they'll be playing it on TV here later tonight, I'll definitely have to watch. Roddick is always in his best form on hard court, so this Kohlschreiber must have played pretty fantastically, but I'm not really familiar with him too much.

I would say that Federer can look quite good. Not as good looking as Andy, but hardly the worst looking on the tour. That and his skills are pretty much unmatched in all of tennis history.

Shame Federer never got to play Sampras at Pete's peak years. I think that's really the only way to see who is the best of the two, Gil-bort. :)

I am also not surprised Roddick is knocked out of a major once again. He gives American men's tennis a bad name. For someone who was suppose to carry the torch left by Sampras he sure hasn't done a great job of it.

You forget, Tull, that Federer beat Sampras on Sampras's best surface at Wimbledon in 2001. You also forget that Sampras retired during his peak years, unlike Agassi! Sampras retired when he was at his best, so to say that Federer's 2001 victory over Sampras in 2001 isn't solid evidence of superiority I'm not sure what is. XD Sampras acknowledges just how good Federer is. They're going to have a charity match at Madison Square Garden later this year, actually, too. It should be fun to watch. Sampras is only in his 30s now, so I'm expecting him to put up a good fight despite not having played pros in 5 years.

Roddick is getting older. He was terrific about 5 years ago, but he has difficulty keeping up with young new players-- evidenced by Germany's up-and-coming star Kohlschreiber. I like Andy Roddick, and he's been fantastic. It's time to start investing our attention in the young American players, like John Isner, Donald Young, and Sam Querrey. Lots of new talent in American mens tennis to look out for.

edit: By thew way, VF-- next match is Nadal vs. Kohlschreiber-- who are you rooting for?

I thought Kohlschreiber's next opponent is Nieminen? :? But maybe I'm wrong. If the next match is really Nadal vs Kohlschreiber I support Nadal, no doubt.

Oh my! I incorrectly read the draw. If both Nadal and Kohlschreiber win their next opponents, then they'll have to play. Should be fun to watch-- but after that monster of a match he played against Roddick it will be hard for Kohlschreiber to win, I think.

edit: After a grueling 4 hours I'm nearing the conclusion of the recording of the Roddick match they are showing on TV here and I have to say that it is perhaps one of the best matches (by numbers) I've ever seen. Wonderfully played by both of them-- and terrificly close the entire match.

edit2: WOW! Blake was down 4-1 in the 4th set, and already down 2 sets, so I turned the match off. I turn it back on an hour later and I see that Blake managed to come back from two breaks down to win that 4th set in a tie break! Grosjean is a terrific player, so it's a good match to watch. It's interesting to see Grosjean play, just because he's been just so consistently good for the past 7 years. Even though he never broke in to the top 5. There seem to be a lot of fantastic French players in the draw this year.

edit3: Blake did it! I don't know how, but he did it. He played superior tennis by far throughout the entire 5th set, though. He's very athletic. 5 set match, and he showed very little signs of fatigue. It'll be interesting to see how a long match like this will affect him in the round of 16, though.

I'll have to disagree with this. While Andy Roddick is not the greatest tennis player at the moment, he is still a great one none the less. The main two things that work against him are:
1. If the opponent can keep up to his big serve game, the opponent then CAN beat him.
2. Players who play against Roddick know about point #1, so they have extra self-belief that they can beat Roddick if they can prevent themselves being bullied by his power game. Hence, resulting in the opposition "upping" their level of play making it far from easy for Roddick to play against.

This is shown in the match against Kohlschreiber. The German guy played a great tennis as opposed to Roddick playing crap. It was a tight match in which both players gave their all that in the end, Kohlschreiber was the one who won.

Well it is definitely not a solid evidence simply because it was simply a "one off" match. Anyone can lose to anyone when they've only played once. Playing against each other once doesn't conclude anything at all when it comes to the big picture. And don't forget that Federer and Sampras played three exhibition matches in Asia last year where Federer won 2-1. While the overall score favored Federer, it showed that Sampras, even after being retired for years, was still capable of defeating Federer which brought the point of "If Sampras could still took 1 match against Federer now 5 years after Sampras retired, doesn't that mean that he's better?" which is of course arguable too.

In the end, Federer and Sampras come from different era. It is impossible to say which one is better because they never really compete against one another.

Then we also have to take into consideration of the competition from other players. With Federer, it is mostly Nadal on clay court, and then we have players like Roddick, Hewitt, Safin, Djokovic, etc. For Sampras, there were the likes of Becker, Edberg, Kafelnikov, Agassi, Ivanisevic, Rafter, Kuerten, Korda, Courier, Muster, Stitch, Rios etc. I'd say it's arguable, but I think Sampras' competition is more difficult because there were more hihg-quality players and specialists as his competitor while Federer's competitors are mainly up-and-down players rather than consistently up there with him to really challenge him up. Only Nadal seems to be sticking with Federer. The rest still changes all the time.

Of course this doesn't translate directly to Sampras being better than Federer or vice versa, but I do think that Sampras had it tougher than Federer, and to be able to achieve what Sampras managed to achieve seemed to show how great he was while being surrounded by many other great players in his era.

---

Anyways, back to Australian Open 2008, it seems Hewitt v Baghdatis match would finish way over midnight. It's already 8.41 PM now and Federer vs Tipsarevic match still hasn't finished after the rain delay. It's currently at 6-7 7-6 5-7 6-1 5-5 with Federer winning 2nd and 4th set while the Serb winning 1st and 3rd set. After this match, there is still Venus Williams v Sania Mirza first before the Hewitt v Baghdatis.

Maria Kirilenko beat Anna Chakvetadze
Marin Cilic beat Fernando Gonzalez (I saw Cilic beat Melzer on Court 18 on Day 4 when I was there)
Agniezka Radwanska beat Svetlana Kuznetsova
Novak Djokovic beat Sam Querrey

Aurelien; I hope you were watching the end of that Federer match that was just on. I meant to watch the first set or so and then go to bed-- but I ended up staying up for the entire 4 and a half (!!!!!!!) hour match! It was one of the greatest 5-set matches I have seen in ages. Easily the best since I witnessed the epic five set clash between Agassi and James Blake in 2005 US Open. Those Serbian players are all starting to come into their own. Tipsevaric (spelling?) played tremendously-- and Roger played nervously-- and nearly lost the whole thing! Definitely exciting, I'm not sure I'll be able to sleep after getting so worked up in that final set. Amazing.

Yeah, I just finished watching the end of the match. I'm not sure if you got to see it on TV there or not, but the on-court interview with Jim Courier was an interesting one. Federer said that they both played well, and that in the end, sometimes he wishes that they can just have a draw in tennis. That is how highly he appreciated Tipsarevic's play on that match.

EDIT: Posting this picture that I thought to be adorable.

Nah, I went to bed (or I intended to go to bed) right after the match was over because at that point it was past 5 in the morning.

I saw Lleyton's match went to 5 sets as well! That means yesterday saw 4 5-set matches! Roddick's match (technically was the night before, but went well into the next day, I believe), Blake's match, Federer's match and Hewitt's match! It's shocking because up until this round, most of the male players have just dominated their opponents, and now suddenly they're stuggling.

Cute picture, too. The Serbian players are all pretty awesome.

Dagnabbit to heck! Federer almost lost when he should've lost. Matches like the one he just barely eeked out a win usually ends up inspiring the winner to bunker down and just do everything and anything to win. Unless there's a major emotional letdown with his next match I don't see the Swiss losing.

Well, you also have to take into account that this was a 4 and a half hour long match! So the physical effects of this massive 5-setter will be evident. However his opponent in the round of 16 also played a huge 5-setter! So they're both in the same condition. (I believe he's play Lleyton in the round of 16, right?) Still, I wouldn't count anything out with Federer vs. Hewitt-- however I don't believe the Swede Swiss has ever lost to him.

Still, after a long difficult match like that, anything can happen.

edit: Anyone who has ESPN 2 in America can watch a replay of the Federer match now, if they want. May be your only chance to see Federer in danger for a while. Or maybe not!

edit: Federer is not Swedish, silly me! Silly typo.

That would have been awesome if Janko Tipsarevic won vs Federer!

Here are some pics of Tipsarevic. Enjoy! :D

He's a pretty darn cute guy. I have to say, I really have a soft sport for glasses, though-- so those just killed me. :D Serbian players are just so lovable. ^^
