Just beat Suikoden 1 for the 18th like time and I noticed the following:
In the big battles, Crowley, Luc and Lotte are teamed as " Childeren of the runes". So we all know about that bastard Luc, but I wondered if at least Crowley posesses a true rune? I don't think Lotte is a true rune wielder, but Crowley's attack speech is " May the 100 runes within me.." so what's his secret?

Maybe a stupid thread, but hell I like to hear your thoughts.

Crowley is said to be one of the strongest magicians in the world, and that he's even found the way to reincarnate himself. Along with his pupil Mazus. History records the wastelands between Toran and Dunan being created from a duel the two had.

I can answer this now though. Crowley does not have a true rune. It's against his morals or code or whatever. He's trying obtain the power equal to that of a true rune without actually having one. He has at least one hundred different runes on his body which is why his quote says that.

Well not really. The Head and Hands is considered gameplay, not the actual only place runes can be attached.

Lotte likely doesn't have a True Rune. Though, her age is unknown and it is said that she is far older than she appears to be. This could mean that she's ageless like a True Rune bearer, or she may just keep her age a secret and try to stay young looking. So while it is not a fact that she doesn't have a True Rune, there is no evidence aside from her aging and secrecy that she has one.

And like said, Crowely just has 100 runes on his body. He seems to be one of those people that is so gifted with magic that he doesn't age anymore. Like Lotte, I guess?

I get the impression he just ages slowly, but can still die.

That.....I don't want to know.....

Maybe there are other factors that made him age slowly. Not necessarily a true rune...
I wonder if it's same with Jeane? Although she can hide her true form. :(

Ahhh.....the mysteries.....:/

Crowley does not age slowly or if he does it is never even hinted at. What, he doesn't already look like he's possibly pushing 100 as a hunched over gray haired old man? Crowley is long lived but it shows.

As for Lotte, I have heard nothing about her being older than she appears. It is mentioned on this site that her power betrays her age but... well, nothing more is ever hinted at. I certainly wouldn't take it as fact that Lotte is much older than she appears although it is certainly plausible.

And it may be that at that time Luc wasn't planned to be the True Wind bearer and the developers simply put all the best mages together in one team...

Case in points: It is called "Children of the Runes", not "Children of the TRUE Runes".

Crowley seems like a fitting choice due to his 100 runes, and Lotte was probably put there because she iis a mage.

THere are a few other groups with members who did not quite fit the title: Archers' Georges and Marco, Cooks' Rock, Musicians' Window, etc.

Actually, Luc was the True Wind Rune bearer in Suikoden 1. Just not in the American version's translation. In the scene where he summons the golem to attack you at the Magician's Island, he says "True Wind Rune..." in the Japanese version but "Wind Rune..." in the American version.

Translation mishap.

Hmm...it would have taken away a lot of fun if I'd known that before playing SIII...
Poor Japanese version players.

Or maybe it wasn't a big deal back than for the translators.

Hrm, I've never actually heard it translated like that. Where are you getting that translation Ackie?

This is what the Japanese players told us in the old days.

Other translation problems: In the Suikoden 1 manual, they claim that Crowely invented a way to combine the power of three runes together (as a game mechanic). This is not only an outright lie (you cannot combine three runes in battle) but it wasn't in the Japanese manual at all. They also claim that Kuromimi's nickname is Black Ears, but this is never mentioned in-game (Kuromimi means Black Ears in Japanese or Chinese or something, I was told, but I cannot confirm). They also claim that Mose's nickname is Pops or something like that, but that was also never mentioned in the Japanese manual, but it's right there in the American manual.

Suikoden 1 has lots of translation issues. Godspeed Rune, Holy Rune, Star Dragon Sword, Prodigy, Firewind/Windfire Cannon, etc.
