Before the year wraps up I want to get a feel for what new music everyone has been listening to, just to see what I've missed, and what I should pick up and hear before the year is out.

So the idea here is to talk about what new music you've been listening to this year, and why you like it.

As for me, there are a couple albums that stand out.

My favorite new album of this year is probably going to have to be Jens Lekman's Night Falls Over Kortedala. It's nothing ground breaking, just darn good music for the entire album. It's fairly traditional pop, sung with a kind of warm baritone voice, with a Swedish accent that is noticeable occasionally. It's an extremely down to earth CD that's a must have for pop this year.

Beirut's Flying Club Cup is another album I would call must have-- but its appeal is much more limited than Jens Lekman's, I feel. It sports a really uniquely beautiful sound, incorporating a wide range of different brass instruments, and accordion, with strings arranged by Owen Pallett (of Final Fantasy), and a singer with a strangely exotic kind of voice. If you're looking for something unique this year, definitely pick this up.

I'd be kicking myself if I left out the Arcade Fire's new album Neon Bible. While it isn't quite the masterpiece that Funeral was, it is a major contender for 'best album' of the year, for me. I really don't have much to say about this album except that it's a must have for indie rock fans.

Other albums I thought were interesting were the Battles CD Mirrored, and the new Coheed and Cambria CD No World for Tomorrow. The latter, while seems kind of meh at first, actually turns out to be a pretty fun CD to listen to as a whole-- so don't let it pass you by after only hearing a song or two of it.

So what has everyone else been listening to, so far this year?

Woah, I totally forgot that The Shins' Wincing the Night Away was a 2007 release! I swear I had it back in 2006. Huh. Either way, that is an absolutely fantastic album, one of their best, if not their best, which is certainly saying something.

I also really need to get that Colleen CD. Badly.

Heh, the only new albums I got this year where In Rainbows and Neon Bible. I sort of suck.

Both very much enjoyed though.

I'm lame. D:

I didn't really get a lot of albums this year that I was absolutely thrilled with. Here are the ones I did enjoy. :3

Anberlin - Cities
Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High
Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long

And I honestly can't think of anything else that comes to mind that I bought this year. :/

Okay. Double posting and whatnot, but it's been some time. I think I've found my favourite album for this year.

Scouting for Girls' self-titled album is totally rocking my socks, and I can't get enough of it. :3

Dream Theater's Systematic Chaos is by far the best I've heard in a while. Same with Nightwish's new album, though it didnt last quite as long.

The Kaiser Chief's album whose name escapes me at the moment has been getting a lot of playtime in casa de Boogeyman.

Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace by the Foo Fighters is also an amazing album by one of my favorite bands. They may be a bit more mainstream than a lot of the stuff mentioned before in this thread but that doesn't stop Dave Grohl from being my hero.

Chase This Light from Jimmy Eat World is yet another solid outing from them.

Sawdust from the Killers may not be groundbreaking or even necessarily new since it is just a bunch of B-Sides and unreleased tracks but God help me I love it. Also the new song they did record for it Tranquilize is amazing and features Lou Reed of Velvet Underground fame.

I'm sure I'll think of some others later.
