For the updates on the main site, I was trying to show how to encourage people to join the community.
If you put updates about so-and-so discovering a new regiment, or nation X capturing the ports of nation Y, for a new person, it might just be like "meh, I'm not a part of that so I couldn't care less".
Whereas, personal updates can be inviting because people can easily be a part of that and feel as part of the community. It's something that new people can relate to straight away, whereas the Nation System isn't easily relatable without time. _________________

I'd actually like to see 2 different update spots. One involving the war games, and another that deals with various other Community aspects. _________________

I'm not going to be very popular with this... but I'd shut this entire site down and wipe out everything, including our beloved stats. Fresh start on a new system, phpbb3 without anythign with suikoden and their nations and a more generic feeling with it's own history. We have a number of very talented writers... get them to create a backstory with fictional "nations" or "factions". I would re-jigg the system to make the person (or member) have a greater effect on the nation system then they do now with more choices.
I would then make the main site more dynamic and focus more on the community, less on the information. Blogging, comments on articles, editorials, news, etc all with a focus on RPGs. I would focus less on static content, more on dynamic interaction or community building tools. _________________ ______ "We're still flying"

To be honest, that's not such a bad idea. I'm sure a lot of people would not be too happy losing all that they've put into their nations and this site, though. However this does sound like the most long-term sustainable option for the site if Suikoden we to discontinue. To keep the Suikoden memory alive there will always be Suikosource (well, not always!).
Make the site into just a general community, rather than a site directed at one small niche. _________________

I will be here as long as the nation system and the war game continue. As much as i like suikoden, honestly the only reason i continue to stay interested when there isn't a new suikoden out is the war game. I think the nation system and the war game is essential. I believe if Vex was to make that the main focus of the site (if it wasn't already), suikox could survive.
I have been following Ted and his sites since the Blue Moon's forum days and i doubt i will stop. _________________

I agree with Gil-Galad (who agrees with you). A new site with a more original set-up would be a good way to go. SuikoX already veers away from Suikoden as it is.
But I like SuikoX as it is right now. No way I'd just back out. _________________

Not to say that it's a bad idea, but I'd probably be less (or even not at all) interested in such thing. What makes me like this war-game is because of its relationship with Suikoden, and Suikoden is something that I like. If the war-game is changed into something generic instead, well ... then it means losing something that makes me *want* to participate. Starting fresh with the stats can be okay with me, but I'm probably too lazy to try learning about the whole history and gameplay element of the new war-game. Even with the latter Suikoden (IV and V), I'm already a bit too exhausted to try dig up and to fully understand inside out of the history there. Let alone asking me to learn about a whole new story.

Anyways, moving back on topic as to how this site can survive without Suikoden, well the answer goes back to a question of what you (Vextor) want to achieve. If you simply want to run a message board as long as there are members, then you'd have to change the content into something that would be more appealing to a larger audience. May it be by broadening the site into all RPG, or any games, or talk about global warming, whatever really as long as it has a larger audience. _________________

Maybe create a more interactive portion of the site would attract newer members. Have the overall politicing stay the same but also have a part that can instantly gratify users. Maybe not something as complex as Adventure Quest but something that has an alternate draw using the universe that we've already created. We've all invested a lot here to create a community so I'm sure everyone would hate to see it go. |

Fantastic ideas doing a whole revamp. However, I fear that a whole lot of users would be miffed if their efforts would be negated by the whole revamp thing.

2 million dollars huh? Somehow I highly doubt it'd be anything less than 10 million or so. I could maybe pitch in hundred grand two years from now but 10 million is way beyond our budgets (P.S. I know you are joking) _________________ - 108 Soldiers, 1 for EVERY star.

Well I gotta go with the general consensus here. The war game/ Nation system is really all that keeps me here. A few people outside of SME may recognize me but Parallax is one of my good friends so its the SME that I post in and act in. I usually at least look at the other forums but I don't remember the last time I looked at the Suikoden forums.
Suikoden is great and all, I've played all the games. But even since 5 was released I have found that I'm already losing interest in the series without hearing anything about 6. What really impresses me about Suikox is the people. Even within the grounds of the Suikoden discussions everything is fueled by what the members are able to do with the game. Suikoden is a frame work for this group's own creativity whether it be a war game or a small thesis on who Hugo's dad may be.
As long as we have something that can ignite people's passions this community will always thrive. Whether that be RPGs or an original war game universe that could be created and lived in by the members like fuji suggested. I may not have as much invested in this as many other people but I honestly believe that this site will survive, maybe not without a few losses, but it will survive. It may even work better if it is something that everyone has a hand in creating and forming rather than just interpreting. _________________

Very good ideas after I sifted through all the replies that had nothing to do with my question!
The best ideas are ideas that require the least effort from me. My time and capabilities are limited, and will continue to decrease because I have other priorities in my life. So the site has to become easier to maintain while being interesting and soul-absorbing as it is. |

As mentioned before, Suikoden is this site and it's the very soul of the War Game. Really the game brings people together, I can talk about random stuff on random forums and get the same effect.
Even more so most members only really interact within their nation. It's created a unique opportunity to get to know a select few from a large group without PMs or Chats.
I know what would really help the site grow along with the continuation of the War Game.

That would work quite well with adding a story or plot, of sorts, to the war game. If nothing else, it would breathe some much needed fresh air into the system. I've got a few more ideas, but Vex can PM me if he's interested. I plan on using at least some of them for my own project, you see, so I don't want them to be common knowledge at this point. |

Well Vex, if the Suikoden franchise dies then you'll just have to become a one man show and make a freaking sequel.
Seriously, I cannot fantom another way of having a site about a videogame franchise. The only site I can think off that's been working with pretty much cero new games is NMA for the fallout franchise, and even they got news that there was a new Fallout title coming soon (Though they mostly hate it already) _________________ DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! |
