I think everyone has seen and heard movies that are generally seen as quite bad and real awful by critics and a large percentage of the population. But sometimes it's these awfully bad movies which sometimes pushes just the right amount of buttons on a person that they end up liking it despite what critics and most people would say about it. These are movies we'd rather not admit to liking

I mean there's a reason why Ed Wood became such a cult director during his time and even after he has passed away. His movies were so godawful that it transcended the realm of awful to pure kitsch. The movies I speak of are awfully bad movies that entertain us not as originally intended by its filmmakers. Dramatic movies which instead becomes a laugh out loud riot by accident. Romance movies so sugary sweet its sickening but we watch anyone.

Action movies which makes no sense whatsoever but with so much action and explosions going on that one is mesmerized by it all. Comedies which have nothing genuinely funny about it but has enough nudity and gross bathroom humor that we'll forgive its unfunniness. Then there's the horror movies which fail to scare or disturb but entertains just because of how awful it is.

So, what are some of the movie guilty pleasures for some of you here?

I like watching cheesy horror movies with my friends. We usually end up renting one that we know will be bad (Zombie Honeymoon, for one) and just have a laugh and a joke. It's enjoyable because of the amotsphere so I'll usually end up enjoying movies which the populace think are crap.

Like Wrong Turn. There's nothing Oscar Winning there, but it was grand. Red Eye is also a good movie without being insanely clever.

I think that's why I can watch Die Hard 4 without a problem. The plot and situations are more than a little daft but the enjoyment factor is TO THE MAX! I can't say I'm a big fan of crappy comedies like the American Pie sequels or the cheesy copy-cats like The Reef. I just get bored of them.

I'm a huge fan of horror films that are so bad they are good. Santa's Slay, Frankenfish, Chupacabra Terror... you name it, I love them all.

I really love House of the Dead by Uwe Boll. It has so much blatant non-sensical dialogue and absurd scenes, I am amazed it was even made.

I also enjoy the movie Loev Actually, even though it is super sugar coated. With multilpe love story lines all turning out picture perfect, including a president directing foriegn policy to get a girl, a writer not speaking the language of his love, two porn stars falling in love and a little kid learning to play music to get his cruxh, you can't help but go "Ahhh....".

Love Actually was perfect as it basically encaptulated all the cheesy "chick flic" cliches into one sizeable movie. It didn't need to focus on character development (as there really isn't all that much in the average rom-com) so it focused on the laughs and the "Ahh" factor that Timbo mentioned.

Now that Timbo mentioned a rom-com, I figure I should mention I'm a bit partial to Sweet Home Alabama. What can I say, Reese's accent does it for me every time.

Like Timbo most of my guilty pleasures when it comes to movies have been of the horror and scifi variety. Though horror movies tend to pull off the guilty pleasure thing much better than scifi. But for true guilty pleasure on my part it has to be romantic comedies and just plain old hanky romance movies. I think I've watched and desensitized myself enough with gore, violence, sex and sex in my movies to admit that I really enjoyed watching A Walk to Remember. Mandy Moore was just too damn wholesome and cute in that movie. Then they had to top it off by giving her a life-threatening condition. I was a goner. Stick a fork in me for I am done.

I kinda liked the book more than the movie when it comes to 'A Walk to Remember' but that's beside the point.

For my movie guilty pleasures... Action Films. There's just something about the cheesy dialogue and practically immortal hero and the numerous nameless henchmen who perish along the way. The gritty one-liners which tend to reflect the movie title (sometimes even be the movie title itself) are all part of the seemingly undying appeal of these cliché action flicks. Plus, it's pretty cool to see a lot of random vehicles getting blown to smithereens from time to time.

I've never read any of the Nicholas Sparks books and I'm sort of glad I haven't. That's something that may just be too much of a guilty pleasure. I may just have to turn in my NO MA'AM chapter leadership card if I did. As for action movies I can totally understand what you mean. I think this is why despite having little or no use for a coherent narrative I have a special liking for Michael Bay's action movies. He sure knows how to blow stuff up.

I think another set of guilty pleasure type movies for me have to be the Skinemax titles. I mean for a teenager who just got premium cable and where porn was the holy grail still unattainable during the early days of high school then that left the very late-night cheesy, soft-core "romance thrillers" shown on Cinemax. I still watch them here and there and remember just how fun they were to watch when I was a young lad.

I'm going to admit of something of an affinity for the stupid teen comedies. I loved all of the American Pie movies (even the crappy but breast-filled 'sequels') and still watch them to this day if I can catch them on. I liked them because they made me laugh when I realize that those guys are a lot like many of the boys I went to high school with and even myself to an extent. I remember when the objective of getting laid was the most important thing in my life very fondly; don't get me wrong, its still up there, but its not as important as my friends, family, schoolwork or doing what's best for me.

I also like Not Another Teen Movie because I think it did the best job making fun of those types of movies, and I also somewhat enjoy the source material (She's All That). Even if its less stupid, 10 Things I Hate about You is also pretty good for a high-school Shakespeare remake though its pure bubblegum. That said, I thought Epic Movie and Date Movie were horribly done parodies. For a movie to be funny, the jokes need a touch of subtlety from time to time.

The Notebook is classic date-movie fodder. No doubt fellas, at least once in your lives when a girl asks you to come over and watch a movie, you'll get this one, but its not all horrible. Likewise, you'll all probably at some point in time meet a girl who cites this as her favorite movie. Rachel McAdams is gorgeous and the story doesn't deviate too far from the book (which is actually fairly decent). I'm just a big sap for that kind of love lost and reunited stuff. I generally don't like romantic comedies, but don't mind a good romantic story (The Princess Bride, Titanic, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), etc,.

I'm a huge fan of Dude, Where's my Car? because of my bent towards stoner-comedies (even if its relatively drug-free). It's stupid, pointless fun and it knows it, and I also like the hilarious homoerotic relationship between Seann William Scott and Ashton Kutcher. Being a (former) stoner with one token best friend I always smoked with, I did see traces of our relationship in that movie.

I also dig How High?. The movie was pretty by the numbers, but Redman and Method Man also share a nice dynamic, and come on...with those two, you know you're gonna be getting some great hip hop (with a cameo by Cypress Hill).

Tullaryx mentions the Michael Bay action flicks, funny that today Bad Boys was on and I watched it. I actually feel that its a very good movie because it lacks the stilted, awkward dialogue that plagues most of his movies (even the sequel) but I gripe at the length. You could easily shave 20 minutes off the running time by showing less slow-motion scenes.

Ah, Skinemax, you were always there for me around the time I was discovering myself. I'll never forget that even though if I (in my mid 20's now) am going for a porn fix I tend to like a little bit of the less tasteful stuff, you just don't have the time anymore to appreciate all the subtleties of it.

Guilty Pleasures, yes or no?

Varsity Blues
Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Really that's probably about it. I'm not a fan of most rom-coms, movies about dancing, stupid star vehicles or dumb action movies. A few 'dumb' comedies that I should have stopped liking years ago (American Pie, How High, Dude Where's My Car?), a movie I find legitimately funny but no one else seems to (Not Another Teen Movie) and The Notebook, plus two up for review. Is there more? Probably, maybe I'll remember something else.

For Guilty Pleasures, I would think that nothing beats Street Fighter: The Movie featuring Van Damme and the late, great Raul Julia. Could be just me, of course. It's as bad as they come, bad camerawork, dialogue, acting, the works. 'Course, that's what you get when you pick a fruity Belgian guy to play an American hero like Guile. To this day, I find myself laughing whenever Van Damme makes his "I'm going to get on my boat" speech or when I see Zangief's "QUICK, CHANGE THE CHANNEL!" bit.

Other than that, I enjoy watching those supposedly bad teen movies, like Not Another Teen Movie and Van Wilder. Ah, Tara Reid before her botched boob jobs and tummy tucks or whatever.

Anything by Adam Sandler is a guilty pleasure as well. He isn't really funny, just that all that slapstick in his flicks (notably Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore) is kinda rare in movies nowadays. That, or I don't watch too many movies nowadays. He can't really act for crap, but the ideas behind his movies are rather interesting, IMO.

I just finished watching a direct-to-dvd movie which just made my "guilty pleasure" list. The movie is a different take on the whole Snakes On A Plane theme. This being October and the month of Halloween there's more and more horror movies making its releases on dvd. Flight of the Living Dead: Outbreak On A Plane has zombies loose on a plane in mid-flight instead of snakes. The movie is not scary by any means, but it sure is a fun hour and a half.

The movie doesn't take itself seriously and for that I am glad since this is the kind of movie that would just be ruined if it did. The movie doesn't even need for the audience to suspend their disbelief. Part of the fun of the movie is laughing at the inconsistencies of fighting zombies with firearms and firebombs while inside a pressurized plane cabin. All in all, I thought Flight of the Living Dead was a much better and enjoyable movie than Snakes On A Plane.

Want a film superior to Snakes on a Plane?

Don't want to go with Tullaryx's clearly stolen theme of zombies on a plane?

Want a movie that was overlooked for a much needed Oscar?

Don't want to watch a movie with a budget?

Snakes on a Train is for you! I was assured that the title was created completely independently of that other movie involving snakes and transportation.

My biggest guilty pleasure would be Super Troopers. It's a total college flick, and has a lot of pothead humor that can only be so funny so many times in a row, but there's something else there that I can't quite put a finger on. I guess it would be the back-and-forth humor between the characters, and the fact that most of the characters aren't too cliched or over-the-top, but rather, just somewhat more absurd versions of average people. And I like it when there is a fair amount of subtle humor along with some slapstick, rather than just topless chicks and dog semen hitting you in the face every two minutes.
