He does say "heresy" and I did wonder about that when I heard it, but just talking semantics, heresy doesn’t necessarily refer to the views differing from religious beliefs, but can just mean commonly accepted beliefs. Last I heard they were removing all traces of religion from the movie, but if they don’t, that’s great!

Y'know, I never even thought about that connection. It's quite possible considering what Asriel does at the end of the book. SPOILER Killing Roger by tearing away his Dæmon END SPOILER.

In my experience, heresy always refers to going against the church (someone who does is labeled a heretic). So, hopefully this is a good sign. We'll have to see when it comes out how much religion they left in there. Really, in the first book there isn't too much and much of it is subtle, so maybe they will let it stay in there.

There's a slightly new trailer at Apple (probably elsewhere but I'm too lazy to look) but it doesn't really contain many new scenes; Asriel and Coultier under the Northern Lights looks dazzling however.

I just realised that Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig are in The Invasion together as Eva Green is also in Casion Royale.

...but...Orlando Bloom isn't in the Golden Compass. I was talking about actors and actresess who were other movies together, not just naming random films the actors were in.

The trailer (yeah I watched it again, so what?!) looks beautiful! I want to go!

To the north pole? I guess having fur helps some.

Um, right, movies...I don't know if I'll like this one. Blatantly showing minor changes from the book in the trailers makes me wonder what they're trying to cover up or just threw away in the actual movie. I may enjoy it for what it is and I may have to, if it strays from the book. Can't be sitting there comparing the two the entire time.

Well, this newest trailer set to be the final one before the film's release in a couple weeks really shows off the epic nature of the books. And it has more armored polar bears! I mean come on. Armored Polar Bears!

I also like the fact that Christopher Lee is in it (something I just found out from watching the trailer) and once again playing one of the evil authoritarian wanting to rule the world.

Latest trailer for The Golden Compass

I dunno how I feel about them calling it The Golden Compass instead of an alethiometer. Also is it just me or does it look like they've eliminated the Church as an enemy and just replaced it with the vague Magisterium? Afraid of alienating Christian audiences maybe?

I really think they won't eliminate the religious implications of the trilogy. But I can understand why they will keep it from being the major theme. Pullman seems to be ok with the ambiguity plus the next two books get even heavier on the anti-Christian dogma. I think anyone who has read the book will see the allegory even if it has been dampened a bit. I mean if there was a negative on Narnia it was the real sledgehammering of its Christian allegories to the point I thought Mel Gibson will show up to torture Aslan.

That's actually what they did. Though Pullman has said more than once that the Church in HDM could be represented by any controlling body.

Quote:
Director Chris Weitz has himself adapted Philip Pullman’s work, citing the film and its sequels to be influenced by Barry Lyndon (1975) and Star Wars (1977). He also mentioned that the film would make no direct mention of religion or God, two of the key themes of the books - a decision attacked by fans of the trilogy. According to Weitz, New Line Cinema feared that "perceived anti-religiosity" would make the film financially unviable in the USA. However, Weitz reassured fans by saying that religion would appear in euphemistic terms.

Lee playing someone in the Magisterium? Very nice.

Does anyone else think Iorek sounded like Ian McKellen?

Okaaaaaay, so I just checked the IMdB and it IS Ian McKellen. I thought it was someone completely different.

I'm so very excited about seeing this movie! Please don't let me down!

I think McKellen plays one polar bear while Ian McShane plays another. Either way seeing that trailer and seeing the bear in armor sitting on his throne was just too cool. Best hide all the Coke and Diet Cokes when they're around.

Yeah, Ian McShane plays Ragnar (Iofur) who'd be the "bad ass" on the throne. Of course, we all know Iorek is hardcore to the max. The alethiometer also says so and therefore it must be true. I just didn't know that Ian McKellen was playing the opposition.

The damn thing about the Coke adverts is that they WILL be among the trailers for the movie as it'll be around Christmas time.

I guess they don't just show those Coke-thieving polar bear commercials in the US. I like how the trailer shows that this won't be a Rings or even a Narnia knock-off. Plus, just seeing the trailer I want that monkey dead.

You know, I expected the monkey to be less fiersome. In the book, the monkey is certainly a creature to be terrified of but I never thought it would come across as so in the films. I definately can see Ozymandias (that's what he was called in the play, or the radio production, or something - I can't remember now, I might have made it up!) being very menacing.

I'll say it again, Nicole Kidman as Marisa Coulter is perfect. She looks as though she can float.
