The first Suikoden game I played was Suikoden 3. I played it without a guide the first time. After learning of the 108 bonus you get, I replayed it and used a guide. I've made a point of using a guide with every Suikoden game so I could ge that bonus. So, I've never got a change to really play the game on my own.

But, with the next Suikoden, it'll be different for me. I want to play through it without a guide first. So, for me this'll probably mean getting my butt kicked a lot (I'm horroble at RPGs, but they're fun so feh). This'll be a personal challenge.

So, what about you guys? Do you use a guide on the first play through or not? Or will you try and go it alone with the next installment?

(sorry if this was reposted)

i usually use a guide just because i like to learn what i can during the first play through. then i go play it again and understand the stuff a lot better.

I try to not use a guide the first time around and try to enjoy it for it's story...and try to get through it with my own wandering around on instinct....

At least....that's my initial intention when I first start out a Suikoden game....but usually around the point of the game I get the headquarters I end up using a recruitment FAQ anyway >___<

I'm the same way. As much as I hate using a guide, I still find myself going to an FAQ site and checking out the latest suikoden's recruitment guide. I feel so incomplete if I don't get the 108 stars. But I've played the suikoden games plenty of times without using the guide. Hehe.

I feel the same, even though I hate using guides for my first playthrough since it takes the challenge away, I will still end up using one, I just feel incomplete if I miss something in the game either the stars, hidden scenes or one-chance unique items so I use a guide to avoid that since I don't have much time to play it again.

Yeah, incomplete. That's the word I was looking for.

For the first play through i wont use a guide at all, but then for the second i will use online FAQ's to make sure that i get everything that i can the second time round.

Personally i think using a guide in the first play through just cheapens the experience of the game.

I check recruitment guides every so often, but I avoid using anything else. I like to see how far I can get on my own. The most fun I've ever had playing Suikoden was my first playthrough of my first game, because I had no idea what to expect. Walkthroughs kind of ruin it for me.

I always try to get as many SoDs as possible without looking at a strategy guide. I got about 100 in Suikoden 2 before having to give up and look online.

better than i did when i first played 2. hell if i didn't have the guide i would of never known about eating fried tacos to get the toasty effect and then talking to tetsu. but at least in 1 i never had to use a guide to get all 108 stars even though it took many years to find em all. i think i finally found the window crystal to get window and crowley like 4 years ago.

The first time through I don't use guides or walkthroughs for Suikoden. I'd rather spend 120 hours traversing back and forth to all the towns whenever there's a plot advancement to see if I can recruit someone else. I've never used a recruiting guide the first time through, and I haven't needed to use one for 4 and 5.

Suikoden is really the only game series these days where I treat myself to playing it straight up the first time through. Other games I don't really have the time to mess around with them, so I'll use a guide if I feel like I'm missing out on too much or if I feel like I'm wasting too much time trying to figure out where I need to go next. Also if I suspect that there are optional bosses, I'll look that up too. Suikoden isn't really much on optional bosses, so I never had to worry about missing out on any of those in the course of the game.

It has/is to be close to impossible to finish the game with 108 stars on your first play-through with no guide whatsoever. I use a guide when I am frustrated with the game and do not have the time to spend pulling my hair out, basically.

When I have the time I like to play a game all the way through first with no guides, and then replay and get all the bonuses/secrets with a guide. However, lately I haven't had the time to do that, so I've been using a guide on the first play through. If I get frustrated on a first play through, I may pull out a guide, or just toss the game aside for a few weeks. Then, when I've calmed down, and I can look at the game level headed, I can take on the challenge again. ^_^

With every single game I try to play it through and explore everything on my own. Its more fun without using the guide and I think you get more out of it because when you read a guide you spoil some of the game for yourself and it just takes some of the enjoyment. However, by choosing to do this and not use a guide I miss out on some items, quests and in this specific game especially some of the charachters that join as your 108 stars of destiny.

However, in the second play through if there is a second play through that is (of course there is with Suikoden games lol) I will normally use a guide to see what I missed during my first play through and will attempt to get everything that the game possibly offers to get.

The only case in which I will use a guide before I finish my first play through for it, is if I get really suck at some point in the game and dont feel like exploring and using my time to try and figure out what has to be done next to contiue you on through the story.

I dind't use a guide, I killed all the generals, I let Pahn die, I missed Crowly and posslby a lot of characters that were hiding.

for suikoden two, I had read some things about it, but finished the game missing posslby 20+ characters, I discoverd the kobold villiage at the end of the game.

Suikoden three was a tad bit easier, I only needed to ask for help recruting the black and tan dog because I dind't know he was behind a pillar, I posslby gained 3 levels looking for him, I dreamd about him before I got him and was suppirsed that the dog looked like how he did and I saw no prior character art of him.

Suikoden four I lread a lot about before I got it, I almost didn't get it because I heard it was horrble, I needed a walkthrough for recruting characters because of the insane way they made the game

Suikoden five, like two I finished missing 20+ characters, I dind't look at spoilers on it or much of anything, It was sad how many characters I lacked.

as for tactices/rapsodia I didn't finish yet, I left off in some kind of warehouse/factory and some girl kept dying..Rita I think.
