Got more games recently, don't want to act like a showoff but it took me forever just to gather them together so I'll mention it.

Cheap old stuff:

I've got to question this one. Why do you have 7 copies of "The Guy Game" between the 2 different systems? I can understand, from a certain angle, that collecting multiple copies of rare or favorite games is fun, but really. The Guy Game?

Well I do like to just collect games, and over the years I guess I got used to buying whatever game that's worth twice or more the price I'd pay for it.

That particular one was rather embarrassing for me to even just walk up to the counter & pay for, I don't go out looking for that kind of crap, but when I see it sitting there for me to buy at $10 in a store and I know it's worth $30-50, it's just really hard to pass up. I have no plans to sell it right away to get the money (I think I really should with crap like that...) but looking at just the numbers, I do know I don't yet make $20-30+ an hour working at my job, so it's almost like I can't afford to pass up cash like that for doing nothing... and that's like 9 total copies, from 9 different places so I had to do that walk of shame 9 different times...

How do you define the game's value? I mean, if the game store is selling at 10 bucks, it obviously means that they can't get rid of them. Especially at game stores like GameStop and Game Crazy. They have a national inventory and see which games move fast and which don't and when they don't move product, prices go down. So, a game like that, which nobody really A. knows about, B. wants and C. is willing to pay more than 10 bucks for isn't a sound investment in the least.

I just checked ebay on it. A few people have it up, but nobody has a single bid on it. I dunno, just because a game MIGHT be sold at a higher price elsewhere just isn't enough for me to buy it.

I'm a collector of great games, particularly RPGs and I usually only own 1 copy per game because I'm not a reseller, but I can understand if a deal comes around, like finding a Suikoden II or even a FF7. But most of the games I see you scoop up a lot of copies aren't, at least to me, worth the effort. Unless of course you go out and resell them at face value relatively quickly. I mean, right now, how many people are really itching to buy ICO? A couple of years ago, yeah, but not anymore, and as time goes, its not going to gain a cult following like some series do get (Shining Force, Ecco the Dolphin etc all have huge fan bases even now) so its resell value actually goes down.

How often do you SELL games? You know, to make money off your "deals".

As of this day, never. I have sold gaming things I don't need that came to me with minimal efforts on my part and turns a good profit, like a few Wiis a few month back, but it doesn't happen all that often because I don't try very hard to do things like that and I don't like to knowingly making money off of others with needs.

I like collecting games because I find the process fun, and due to how picky I am when it comes to finding a game I'd really settle down to play, I almost find more joy in just getting what I want instead of playing them.

If its ebay you are talking about I do see that a few copies are being sold right now for a rather low price for whatever reason, but if you check the history of the item you will see that is not the norm, while the supply have been very low. I am in no hurry to sell anything that I have, and I'm not expecting on this or any other games to always keep their value, sometimes I'm right and sometimes I'm wrong, I have confidence in my decisions but it's not like I'm sinking in all my money or counting on these things to get me rich, I just find it fun.

Quote:

I'd normally only go after the games that I know is worth my money at a price acceptable to me, when I get something that's crap I'll be the first one to admit it and I got plenty of those, I'd love to explain my reasons for getting each game that I find worthy of collecting but I don't think anyone cares.

I do think that many games I got recently are pretty questionable choices, but those are only the ones I got over the last few month, I have way more stuff filed away that I am much more confident about.

Quote:

I check around, recently I was informed of games like the one we been talking about, Firefighter F.D. 18 & some others to be valuable when a friend of mine handed me some game collecting magazine, even most of the listing in there were wrong, but since there is not an official trade market for this stuff, I'd take good info anywhere I can get it.

I mean, if the game store is selling at 10 bucks, it obviously means that they can't get rid of them.

I thought so too but that's not really the case, demand of so-called "rare" games is hardly justified by the supply. Many times good follow-up games triggers previous titles of the same series to greatly increase in value, just last summer there were well over a dozen copies of Persona 2 in my area, and it was only sold online for about $20. I bought quite a few for about $5 each as they just sat around and nobody wanted them, after P3 came out, the price of P2 shot up to around $50. Suikoden III had the same effect on II back in 03.

Now, for whatever reason (I think Brawl must have something to do with it) Pikmin 2 is sold online for $50-60, there are plenty of supply: about 250 copies on ebay a month, yet it's selling for that much. At the same time, Gamestop recently sold the game for less than $20, now they more than doubled the price for a used copy to $39.99, guess they are not too worried about just getting rid of them anymore... and I'd bet if they are still selling for $60 on ebay in a month that price will get jacked up again.

Those are not rare games, what is a rare game? That stupid soft-core porn trivia game is... and frankly I think it has a better chance to retain or gain value than the likes of Persona 2 & Pikmin 2.

I hope you don't think I'm criticizing you, I'm just trying to understand why you do what you do. I just wouldn't buy more than one copy of a specific game unless I had the notion I was going to sell/gift it at a later date. So, your methods intrigue me, and in some ways baffle me. So, its an understanding process.

Oh no not at all, I been pretty seriously criticized about the way I collect games many times here before, I know my reasons aren't great or even good at times, but I just like to do what I do.

I totally see my method/addiction of game collecting relating to the getting of achievement points when I'm playing games, as those two different actions register the same responses in my head:
1. If I want to get something (a game or achievement in a game) I'd disregard the logic that doing so may not be worth my time, and many times wasting lots of effort just to get them.
2. Nobody I know cares about how much games/achievement points I have, and I have no desire to gain any sort of reaction for having them, but I can't seem to stop wanting more.
3. Even I find gaining more and more games/achievements to be pointless at times, yet I'm always looking to do it.

At the end, I still do enjoy doing both of those things despite knowing I'm not really accomplishing much of anything.

Mine is a real short list these days. My sister and I split our PS1/PS2 collection after we both moved out of mom and dad's. Others that we never played went to friends. Anyway, my meager list of games reads as follows...

Castlevania: Lament of Innocence
Gladius
Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction
Legaia 2: Duel Saga
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon
Okage: Shadow King
Resident Evil - Code: Veronica-X
Spider-Man (the movie)
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith
Suikoden (my lone PS1 title)
Suikoden III
Suikoden IV
Suikoden V
WWE SmackDown vs. Raw

These days I mostly buy out of the used bins, unless there's something I really want right away. Rest assured that Suikoden VI will certainly fall into that category. ;)

This is more than likely old news to many people, but as I was searching for the name of the lady who designed the characters for Suikoden II & III again (Fumi Ishikawa, Fumi Ishikawa... damn I forget her name everytime) I came upon the Suikoden II wikipedia page that I been to many times before and noticed the website VideoGamePriceCharts.com used as the price reference.

I went to checked out the site and it's not too bad, the prices are obviously not updated as often as they should be (no reflections yet of the price drop to SMT:NOCTURNE & DDS vol.1 due to the reprint that happened recently) and all the prices quoted are still mostly on the higher side (don't expect to get as high a price for whatever games you have if you plan to sell it online somewhere), but it sure has more data and seems better than any games pricing publication I've read, plus it's free and offers pretty easy access so its fun to play with.

I was able to learn a few new things from the site, such as: keep my eyes out for Tetris DS & the board games compilation on DS, as well as maybe heading out tomorrow and pick up the $5 copy of Ninja five-o on GBA since it's a rare title. Get Obscure, KOF 00-01, Bloody Roar 4... for the PS2 at around $15 each if I can.
