Halo, Zelda, KH etc. Those are the "annoyingly big" fanbases which I am referring to. In RPGs, though, Suikoden is either average or above average in sales. I don't actually have numbers though.

Much like the others, as long as it just became popular on its current merits, then why would I care how many people were gushing about it? Among the Suikoden community we already have fiercely loyal fans of certain games. You have the "Suikoden II is the greatest Suikoden ever!" camp, and then the "Suikoden III is the bestest!" and so on.

The only thing that would make me not become a fan of it is if they drastically altered the gameplay mechanics and story to the point where it doesn't fit in just to attract new fans. And it would have to be something major. I hate voice acting in my video games, I hope every time that it will go away although I know better. Still, I don't feel that it takes away from my enjoyment of the game. I can usually manage to find a balance between turning the sound down enough to where the music is still audible but the voices have lost their edge. So something simple like that won't make me less of a fan. Now, if Suikoden VI turned out to be an action RPG, I wouldn't even bother buying it. I know that that sort of thing wouldn't really work with the format, but that's what I mean by a drastic change.

Heck, if people suddenly came about and thought that Suikoden was the greatest game ever, I can only view that as positive. More fans equals more money which would put to rest the persistent rumors that the Suikoden franchise is finished.

if it's that kind of popularity you are talking about, than that's a level about 95% of the games on the market can't reach. I guess if one was to completely over look the process for a game getting to that point (which a series like suikoden will obviously never reach unless major changes are made in every aspect related to how the game is being made and sold) to assume somehow that is the case, then how much someone likes a game is really going to be up to the final product.

For a series like god of war which many thought was not that good to instantly become somekind of greatness after only one game, is not only because people in our area likes action fighting games; of course there's a deep production & promotions budget, you also have the critics that just kisses the ass of a game like that, and stupid gamestop/game sales people that praise it endlessly because of something minor they heard or saw somewhere... after all that hype, if a game is close to as good as people expected, then that game becomes legendary to alot of people fast. But for a game or series to get to that kind of status somewhere, it really have to be attractive to the majority of the players in the area, which suikoden or any other traditional rpg for that matter will never be outside of japan.

As long as Suikoden continues to be made as it normally would, I have no problem. There wouldn't really be any problems for Suikoden communities, just more work for admins and moderators, and I'd gladly put in extra effort for a bigger fan base.

To answer this question:

It doesnt matter whether or not Suikoden does become popular, what matters is the content of the game.

I love the exclusivness of the Suikoden series and I feel like I have something special that other people would like but dont get. However my love for the series would want it to be more popular. As ealrier posters have said that the larger budgets would mean a serious increase in graphics and qaulity of game.

Besides then I could say I liked Suikoden before it was cool. lol :D

Why would you just start disliking the series because it got popular that is one of the stupidest reasons I've ever heard of to hate something,If it got more popular there would a lot more advertisements and the releases would probably be alot more momentous.

My interest in Suikoden will never change even though it becomes popular like the Final Fantasy Series who has made movies, lots of merchandise and stuffs. As long as the quality of games' content doesn't regress to a continues extent and it keeps its uniqueness that I like when I first saw the series.

Beck I agree with you completely all that matters is the hard work that went into the game, and also the game itself I wouldn't care if it was the most popular game in the world, or if it was made out of someones garage as long as the quality stays the same.

I don't see any reason why I wouldn't continue to be a Suikoden fan were it to suddenly become popular. It's not as though I derive pleasure from being among a relatively small coterie of Suikoden fans. That would be just silly, and more than a bit elitist. On the contrary, I would love to see Suikoden become more popular, and for this excellent video game series to really get the attention that I feel it deserves.

The reasons I have for liking Suikoden have nothing at all to do with the game's popularity or lack thereof. I am a fan of the Suikoden series because I like the world it is set in. The nations and characters that populate it interest me. I think that the Stars of Destiny groups are a unique and intriguing plot device. I've thought that the major and random battle systems in all the Suikoden games have been reasonably well done (some, obviously, better than others), and for these reasons I find playing Suikoden fun. And finally, my interest in Suikoden is sustained by my being involved with this site's forums.

Would any of this go away if Suikoden became popular? There's the chance that Suikoden would gain this hypothetical popularity by sacrificing some of its distinctive charm, but were that to happen, I wouldn't be disappointed in Suikoden because of its newfound popularity; I would be disappointed in it because of the decline in quality that accompanied that rise in popularity. The popularity in itself wouldn't be a bad thing at all.

I've never understood the tendency of some people to write off anything that expands its fan base as being a "sell out" or somehow pandering to the inferior tastes of the masses. I think that games (and movies, books, etc.) that are popular can be good too; there's even the change that they are popular because they're good! A good example, I think, is the Final Fantasy series mentioned in the topic post. I've never been a fan of the series itself, really. I thought that FFVII and FFVIII were both highly overrated, although many hailed them as the best games of all time. However, I did thoroughly enjoy playing Final Fantasy X. Just because it came from a popular series that I thought was overhyped as a whole, didn't stop me from thinking that it was a very entertaining game.

So I can't see any reason to think a popularity boost for the series would be anything resembling a bad thing. It would of course depend on how that popularity was achieved, but there's nothing wrong with popularity per se. In fact, if the Suikoden series were to become more popular, this site would benefit a good deal from the new members that would join up.

essentially it won't. the things that make suikoden so awesome are the things that also prevent it from becoming popular, the huge array of characters, the interesting storylines, and aside form jeane there are nearly no big tittied ladies to be found floundering all over the screen like softcore porn. how are they going to become popular with a formula for making quality role playing games?

I'd be really happy if Suikoden got popular... I mean, have the time I talk about the game nobody knows what I'm talking about.

...wait a sec, did I say "half the time?" I should have said... "about every freaking damn time."

Yep, I would, but if Konami started altering the series just as a result of this (e.g. people want it to be more like a Square/Enix game) then I'd be pretty angry. Thankfully I doubt this would be the reason for any change, so, sure, why not?

I'm going to have to agree with the majority here and say that I wouldn't mind a growth in popularity at all as long as the games keep to their roots. I don't think anything could sway me away from the serrious unless there were some major changes in things like gameplay, stories, ect.

One of the things that I enjoy the most about the Suikoden series is the 108 Stars of Destiny. It just adds another level to the great, war-based stories. Although I do enjoy other RPGs..I think the idea of 6 or 7 people "saving the world" gets a little old.

As for the fanbase..I think of it like this: Theres stupid people in the world..your going to run into them sometimes, no matter what. True, a growth in popularity might lead to more contact with said peoples, but it would also draw in more intelligent people who could truely appreciate the serries.

But all in all..I truely don't believe someone elses opinions about the serrious should ever effect how YOU feel about it. They're single player games..When you play them, you don't have to care about what anyone else thinks. (Halo, FF XI, ect.)
