Fortifications and Structures

Those who choose not to go on the road to survive through a zombie outbreak or epidemic will most likely plan and prepare to fortify a structure to bunker down and wait out the crisis. There's many different types to consider when choosing which structure to turn into a makeshift fortress. There's also factors like location of these structures. Are they in a major metropolitan area with a large population? Are they in the outlying suburban sprawl which encircles and dot the areas between major cities? Are they in the rural and farmland region of the country where structures are separated by considerable distances but with utilities and services that are basic at best? Are they in very remote areas where isolation is compounded by harsh climate conditions like extreme heat or extreme cold?

These questions should be at the forefront of any decision to stay static and not survive on the road. Certain buildings and locations must be avoided at all costs since they impose more problems than solutions to one's plans to survive. Then there's the factor of whether the structure can be fortified quickly with the minimal amount of supplies and skills. Most people will not have months or even weeks to fortify a structure they've chosen, but in case they do there's still certain things that must be taken into account. Such things as the amount of doors and windows that need to be boarded up and reinforced. How many floors does the structure have and how easily or difficult will it be to destroy ways up into the upper floors. Then one has to factor range of visibility one has from within the structure. If they can't see beyond the building next to them or the road in front then they will be at a disadvantage in trying to figure out whether a rescue convoy is close by, a band of marauding raiders is on their way, or a horde of zombies is coming your fortress' way.

Below will be the types of structures to be considered for fortification and those to be avoided at all cost.

Types of Structures to be considered

  • Industrial Warehouses - These buildings are very good choices for any group of survivors where space is a specific need. Most industrial warehouses usually have sufficient indoor plumbing and running water to make the early couple weeks of surviving inside with a semblance of comfort. These structures also have pretty good generators that run on both electricity and gas. So, until gas is needed to operate the generator, the machine could be powered through the local power grid. This should give the survivors within time to venture out in the start to gather as much fuel and supplies.

These warehouses are also well-built to withstand alot of different climate changes. Unless a tornado, earthquake and hurricane lands right on top of your warehouse fortress, then you and your group should be safe. The doors on these buildings are also opened by sliding from side to side which makes them ideal. They won't collapse inward from the mass of zombies pressing against them. To keep even sliding warehouse doors from breaking down they could be buttressed and reinforced from within. The windows on things structures are usually placed at a higher height than most buildings. This should prevent any zombie from accidentally breaking the glass and creating a security breach. This shouldn't prevent you and your group from setting guards on them just to make sure they're always secured.

If industrial warehouses have one major disadvantage its that they're usually located within a major metropolitan area or at least too close for comfort to one. Even those industrial parks located at the outlying suburban areas between cities would still be in the path of the hundreds of thousands, if not, millions of zombies roaming around instinctively looking for living people. These structures, like mega-malls and strip malls complexes, would be tempting targets for roving groups of raiders who care not for you and your groups' survival but only what they can take with them. These structures will need constant work. They will also need for its occupants to never become complacent and always stay vigilant for dangers both zombies and humans.

  • Rural and Farmland Estates - These places have as their main advantage location. Specifically, location where the largest population center is a hundred or so more miles away. Their semi-remote location would allow for you and a good number of survivors to fortify not just the estate homes, farmhouse, and/or barns, but the outer perimeter walls. With concentration of people being very small, this should keep the amount of wandering zombies in the off-set at a manageable minimum. With enough people groups could be given the task of creating a makeshift palisade using anything on hand and what could be acquired. Even a perimeter wall using masonry, lumber and excess machinery doesn't have to encircle for a mile in circumference.

These places also have their own self-sustaining utilities and even, if lucky, their own personal gas pump and supply of fuel for vehicles and generators. They should also have their own source of water from well-established dug wells. The large amount of open ground would allow for much visibility all-around for any sort of incoming danger or rescue party. These places will also have their own small supply of livestock and farmable land to have a sustainable source of food.

The disadvantages of being in choosing such a place to fortify and wait things out is minimal, but still ones that could prove fatal. These type of places would attract enough zombies in time as constant movement from people working within the compound are sensed by those in the area. Even a strong, fortified wall and structure will collapse if thousands of moving bodies are pushing against it 24-hours a day, 7-days a week and so on and so forth. This means movement and activity will have to be rationed to a minimum most of the time. Major work can only be done on the outside protections, gathering food and supplies when the factors allow for them to be done safely. This could mean that supplies may run dangerously short and force people to have to venture outdoors.

Another major disadvantage comes in the form of raiders. These type of survivors are the most dangerous since they have mobility, no moral compunction to destroy what you and your group have worked so hard to accomplish, and shoots first and ask questions later. They will also lead zombies to your area if they're passing through. This is where hard decisions must be made as to whether to accept survivors wandering into the area. There's always a chance these wandering survivors could be an advance scout for a band of raiders just waiting for the signal to attack. Compassion will become a luxury in a world overrun by zombies. It's not a necessity that's conducive to long-term survival of you and yours.

  • Military installations - Thse places are purposely built to be fortresses. Even those that only use fenced walls for their perimeter usually have them in several layers. They also have the necessary supplies in terms of food, potable water supply and better yet, ample fuel, weapons and ammo. They would likely have qualified people to shoot said weapons and thus have yourself a ready-made security and search-and-destroy force. Such places could also be further reinforced while the layers of fencing keep zombies from being a bother (well outside of their incessant moaning).

Such fortified locations will also have a semblance of law and order as military installations usually follow a strict rules and regulations to make sure everything is running at optimum levels of efficiency. As things become worst on the outside, law enforcement survivors will most likely flee towards these installation and thus increasing the numbers of people qualified to carry and use a firearm. They will also bring their own set of skills in addition to the many skilled soldiers and civilians already ensconed within.

Tha main disadvantage of such a fortified installation is that they're easily recognizable and something everyone will want to flee to. This will create a situation where these fleeing refugees won't just lead thousands of zombies to your location, but there's also the danger of overcrowding. Even a military installation could only hold so many people before its supply situation become untenable. Even without everyone fleeing to your location, people in charge of the place will have to make the cold, logical decision to turn away survivors who will only be a burden to the group already inside. The elderly and handicapped (physically and mentally) will have to be turned away or just shot on site. Those to be accepted into the facilities must bring useable knowledge and skill that will benefit everyone within. Stockbrokers, game designers, or just anyone whose skills are mostly on things that have no use in such a world will have to be turned away. This may require that people in charge become very autocratic and dictatorial in how they run the place, but decisions need to be made for the survival of those already within.

There's also the ever-present raiders who may try to use their own scavenged vehicles and firepower to breach a hole in the installation's defense perimeter. This will cause untold damage and deaths (deaths which would revive to become the menace the walls were built to keep out) for the defenders. It will also lure in the thousands of zombies in the area to the point that defending the installation will become a fool's errand and fleeing for one's life is the only choice left.

Types of Structures to be avoided

  • Police Stations and Precincts - These places should be avoided at all cost because it's where everyone else needing protection will try to flee to. These places also have their locations within heavily populated areas in a city. This is done on purpose to allow police officers to cover as much of the neighborhood as possible. These places will also be places of violence as police officers will have to fight against zombies who have migrated to follow fleeing city inhabitants. Such places also cannot hold everyone and never built to house large numbers of people for long periods of time. These places are usually some of the first structures to be overrun within the first couple weeks.

  • Hospitals and Clinics - These surely should be avoided like the plague. The only reason why people should flee to these structures and locations is if they want to become the next meal on a zombie's menu. These places would be the first major locations to report large, major outbreaks since it houses the city's morgue but also those who are bitten in the first couple days will be brought here for medical help. With information about how the infection is passed on still something that's unknown, hospitals and clinics will become breeding grounds for zombies who were those originally brought in with bite wounds. These zombies in turn will go after the helpless and invalid patients and those trying to stop them. Hospitals will become ground zero for a major outbreak and release its undead contents and have them radiate in all directions.

  • Churches, Mosques, Temples and other places of worship - Just like hospitals and police stations, these places will be another major focal point for people to flee to. Some for the protection of its thick walls, but most of spiritual guidance. People who witness the beginning of an outbreak, especially if it becomes out of control, will flee to what they think will be the safest place for not just their bodies but their spiritual well-being. Instead of a place of refuge and safety, these houses of worship will become instant death-traps as zombies gradually surround these places until each and every escape route is closed off. These places of worship will also have less protection than what those thick walls of the structures may suggest. Usually located in the heavily populated areas of a city to allow as much of its worshippers to have access to, these places will be easily overrun and probably fall faster than police stations and precincts.

  • Shopping Malls - despite what movies like the original Dawn of the Dead and its remake may suggest, these places are not as safe as shown to be. For one thing too many glass doors and entrances to shore-up and reinforce. Most of the glass used in these places are shatterproof but put enough force and pressure behind them and they will come off their anchoring and open up an open way into your "fortress". Even though these places will have all the supplies and gear you will ever need, everyone else outside will know about this as well. Everyone who is anyone will converge towards malls because of the supplies within and the sense of familiarity and safety they think it'll give them. All malls will do is create a mini battleground between groups of survivors fighting over the remnants and junk of civilization. The zombies who follow everyone will pick off the unawares, wounded and finish off what people started.

So these are just some of the necessary information I believe would help others in how to best prepare for a zombie outbreak or epidemic. There's more things to point out but these basics will be what a person and/or group of survivors need to think about when preparing for the inevitable. It's not a perfect system, but one that tries to factor in every detail needed to minimize the danger on those using it as a guideline for their own survival.

I can't believe it's taken me this long to post here. Before I post everyone should know that I am the absolute king of zombie survival, and here is why.

Location is key:

The absolute most important thing in a zombie attack is your stronghold. The smartest stronghold that exists is something akin to a Walmart. You have a flat roof, easy to defend and keep enemies at bay, a large source of hunting materials, food, water, first aid, and clothing as well as tools and other hardware and sports equipment. That last one may seem a little strange but I'll explain it. Football pads and a hockey stick can be your best friend. Football pads are bulky but still light enough to afford protection and mobility. Hockey sticks provide reach and a weapon that's not going to fail you. If you swing a hockey stick and it breaks, you've now got two weapons instead of one, and unlike firearms, hockey sticks don't need to reload and they don't jam.

Other weapons:

Blades: I have the luck of living nearby a shop that sells blades and I also have a closet full of bladed weapons. These weapons are most useful because they don't need to reload and they are dependable in a pinch. However, in cases of zombism being transmitted by bodily fluids, blades are not the smartest of weapons if you have any uncovered skin.

Firearms: The worst case scenario, you are trapped with only firearms to defend you. Loud, clumsy, unreliable, these are the three reasons why firearms and other projectile weapons are not your friends in the case of a zombie attack. If at all possible, try to keep the usage of these weapons to a minimum, they will often cause mroe problems than they solve.

Cars: Something not often thought of as a weapon but it can be quite useful. If you have a stockpile of gasoline your car may be your best friend. If you find a good place to park and you have more than one person, your car is your mobile fortress. You can keep yourself alive for a long time with a lookout and enough gas. Plus, what could be more fun then watching zombies go flying over the hood?

I've got more but it will get long and involved from here on out so I'll update this later.

People keep mentioning using sharp weapons, like swords and whatnot. I really don't think they would work too well. scarlett brings up a great point with the body fluids and threat of contamination, but that is just one point.

If you are going for a zombie, you are going for the head. You want to destroy the brain, or seperate the brain from the rest of the body (so it can't attack anymore). A blade would have to go through the skull to get to the brain. A blade could easily get stuck in the bone or through anything else it has to go through. You don't want to have to be stuck trying to pry out a blade from a zombie when you are on the run. That is why a bludgeon is the best. A quick bump on the head. No prying it out of them. It all works out.

Also the blade can get dull after a while, and be far less useful. If you don't have the time to sharpen the blade, it is pretty much useless.

However Bub, the decomposing flesh makes it exceptionally easy for one to slash through the throat of a zombie and damage the spine, possibly incapcitating the zombie entirely. And when the blade gets dull it will be less useful but still better than loud firearms or anything with a large splatter effect. The main thing to worry about with bladed weapons is the blood, if the blood carries the disease/infection/radiation/whatever, the blade is not your best choice unless you're covered from head to toe (which is always a good idea anyway.)

True, a Wal-Mart type structure would be a very good stronghold, but for every advantage it gives a survivor and their friends it also brings up major disadvantages that could hasten your survival.

For starters, everyone who is anyone will think the same and go for such a structure. How will you be able to distinguish friend from foe without having to lower defenses? Unless, you become hardened emotionally and not allow anyone else outside of your own group and this action may bring about more problems other than zombies. People who become desperate for any sort of refuge will try anything to get into a fortified location they think will save them. You may be able to defend against these desperate refugees during the initial "great panic" stages of an epidemic but how about if they continue to occur every other day and some of these groups are bound to be heavily armed. Some may also become so desperate as to drive a large vehicle through those large windows at the front of such megastores.

Such places are beacons for the desperate and the criminal. You won't be able to hold out long, especially is you're stock of ammunition for the weapons sold inside begin to run low. Then there's the issue of fuel. Such stores usually have their own gas station where they sell discount gas to customers and members. But this department is usually located outside the main building. How will you be able to defend it?

I'm not dismissing your choice of a stronghold. What I am doing is pointing out why such places, likes megamalls and strip malls, are very bad places to use as strongholds. Everyone will think to go there and the first to arrive usually won't want to share then a new dynamic is thrown into the survive the zombie mix. Now you will have a war not just against the zombies but other humans as well.

A temporary solution at best and a death trap in most cases. As I mentioned in my own post, fuel for vehicles will become a valuable commodity and wasting it on such activities as using a car to mow down zombies would be criminal, if not downright reckless. A car, or even a truck, will break down from enough bodies impacting on its hood, fenders, and windshields. Not to mention the stress it'll put on the axles and wheels. All it will take is for one zombie to get stuck under the wheel well and strand your vehicle in the middle of a large congregation of zombies.

Also, the goal, as I've stated many times, is to avoid zombies at all cost unless there's no other choice but to confront and destroy them. Remember, zombies do not feel pain, remorse or sadness at seeing their fellow zombies get run over and mowed down by someone in a car, truck or other type of motorized vehicle. All it will do is get more of them to notice your passing and follow you until you get stranded.

A vehicle's used should be to just move from point A to point B and Point C and so on until it breaks down. I do hope you're knowledgable of car engines because to do what you're recommending should be done with a car would tax the engine. Not to mention there'll be a high probability one or more of your tires will get punctured. I think trying to change one or more tires in the middle of an outbreak would be fatally hazardous at the best of situations, and suicidal at most.

Yes, the blade will need to go through the skull and into the brain to stop a zombie, but a well-sharpened and maintened heavy blade like a machete could do the job with ease (as long as the person using it is not afraid to swing with conviction) and even a slightly dull machete sitll has the weight of the blade to crack skulls and cause blunt trauma on the brain beneath.

Also, blades truly do not need to be reloaded and is silent to use. But again, even with such a silent and effective weapon, it should be used only if one had no choice. Avoidance of the enemy is one's best tactic when trying to survive. Plus, there's really not that much splatter effect from a sudden blade strike to the head, not like one would get when a slug hits it with ballistic force.

See I could bever understand why poeple don't baracade themselves into a place like an attic. From what I've seen Zombies tend not to jump. So you lower the stairs cut the string that you use to pull the stairs down climb up and pull the stairs up after you. In the original Day of the Dead the survivors did pretty well until the biker showed up and messed up everything.

I got a question for all of you. What if all your plans failed, you are too poor to have weapons, your fortifications aren't strong, and zombies are now right in front of you trying to devour you? I'm a poor man myself so I can't afford all these weapons and fortifications. What should I do if such event occurs?

If such event would happen, the best plan I have in mind is to try to act like a zombie myself. I'd make all the other zombies believe I'm a zombie too. I'll stand up, crumple my hair, make an ugly face, and act like a zombie and start chanting in a zombie-ish voice: "BrRrAAaiIiNnsSsS!" That way, I could easily trick the zombies into believing I'm a zombie myself. Zombies easy to trick anyway. Afterall, zombies don't have brains. But if they do, their brains are too rotten to be capable of thinking.

Barricading yourself in the attic of a home works only if your home has an attic. Or a basement if you're the other way around. The flaws in such a plan is one of supplies and the chaotic environment outside your home.

First, supplies will become a real problem real fast. Even if you had time to stock your attic with as much supplies as you can fit in it, how long do you think it will last. I'm talking on the assumption that you will be rationing your food, water and other supplies. If you are by yourself then maybe it'll last a couple weeks. Maybe stretch it out into a month and a half. You will soon need to venture out of your attic and/or basement to find more supplies if you're to survive.

Second, where would you go if you need to relieve yourself. If you're in the attic this would mean that the rest of the home is either too difficult to defend or already overrun. I think the last thing you would want is to relieve yourself of your bodily wastes close to where you eat, sleep and store your supplies. This would mean either a bucket or container to do your business in then toss out the attic window. Which then opens up the chance you could be detected. Or you venture out onto the roof to do your business. Again, detection would be a forgone conclusion.

Lastly, if you live in an area with other homes built very close next door, like a suburban sprawl, there's the off-chance your neighborhood could catch on fire. With local, state and federal government either too busy to combat the mounting threat and basic services like police, fire and emergency medical departments either non-existent or trying to survive on their own, you're at the mercy of hoping your next door neighbors' home don't flare up into a bonfire. These scenarios are not out of the realm of possibilities. With no one to occupy abandoned homes, gas leaks and other fire-inducing factors could easily turn a home into a blazing inferno and unless doused quickly everyone in the vicinity is in danger of going up as well. I think then the attic would be the last place you'd want to be in.

At best, hiding yourself up in your attic or basement would be a temporary measure at best. Having a plan to leave this type of refuge to something more safe and secured should be the first thing on your mind.

Only works if zombies behave and react that way to someone pretending to be one. Really, there's no explanation as to how zombies are able to sense living humans to go after. In fact, you could say that even the idea of a recently dead body suddenly getting back up again to prey and devour the living would be an impossibility. But were hypothesizing a situation where they have risen. This would mean that whatever has caused this reanimation may have also caused a change in how the zombie's body begins to decompose. Maybe whatever caused the reanimation has made the flesh of the zombie toxic thus preventing the bacterias whose job it is to hasten a corpses decomposition unable to do so.

If you're too poor to have weapons, and I would point out that no one is ever that poor, then you attach yourself to people in the vicinity who wouldn't mind an extra hand to help protect the group. Sometimes numbers is an advantage in that more supplies could be carried. For a weapon you could always find a lenght of steel pipe or a heavy tool as a blunt weapon. This should suffice until you're able to scrounge for something better. And going on the road scavenging for what you need would be the best course of action for those of limited resources and means.

Actually, the best way for home defense in a house with two stories is to remove closet doors and lay them down on the stairs. Zombies aren't too adept at climbing to begin with, now you're giving them a slanted, unstable floor. In the meantime you can pelt them with large objects just to make sure they never make it up. You should also run a bath and all the sinks with the drains closed as soon as you know about the emergency, those will add to your water supply.

Since my house is quite high up from the ground we have four steps for both enterances. The Back stairs are wooden and flimsy and the fron ones are loose concrete so if I can buy ebough time with a barricade or distraction I could remove those.

Of course all effects vary on Zombie Type.

I think something that's better as a house for a stronghold would be an apartment building. Like in the building I live in, it's about 7 stories and there are 3 entrances and a parking garage. The garage is below ground level so that part could be baracaded with fences and cars. the doors to the building, covered with wood planks or steel locks. and basically everyone is safe from the zombie invasion.

There's also a convience store connected to the building so there's the food and water supply. Only disadvantage to the building is that the roof is slanted so there's no way a helicopter would come and take us out, plus there's the threat of no electricity or running water either.

Anyway I never really thought too much about zombies since there'ye not real, but who knows. Cool topic Bub (BTW Day of the Dead's my fav zombie movie, Bub is so cool in that 8-) )

I totally agree and it seems you've read the Zombie Bible as well (Max Brooks). I would refrain from pelting them with objects since those things probably won't kill a zombie and only focus their attention on getting to you. The closet doors acting as a sort of barricade to keep them from climbing up the stairs shouldn't be tested by getting dozens if not more putting their weight on it. The better way is to nail these closet doors onto the stairs then slide down large cabinets and armoires and side table to act as obstacles to anything trying to move up.

In addition to filling up tubs and sinks with water as a reserve water supply, make sure to have in abundance water purification tablets. Standing water will stagnate if not used within a certain amount of time.

Apartment buildings I would consider a must avoid if possible. I say this due to the fact that you cannot account for the actions of your apartment neighbors. Unless everyone in the complex agrees to one plan of action and, one plan only, there will always be the chance that one or a few of your neighbors may do things on their own, get bit and turn into a zombie while in their own apartment unit. Now you will have to contend not just with the zombies outside, but any number of your neighbors within who may have turned.

Also, apartment buildings have too many side entrances in addition to the main one. Who would guard them all even if reinforced shut? In such an event as a zombie outbreak and epidemic, bravery would be something not everyone will be willing to take on their shoulder. To say that people will start thinking in a "me first" thought pattern would be an understatement. Your survival comes first and everyone else is secondary.

Apartment complexes also have a tendency to be located in a heavy population area. This was done on purpose since apartments allows for maximizing a certain acreage of property with as many tenants as possible. I would recommend that you pack up whatever supplies and gear you need. Head off to somewhere more remote and gather supplies and/or other survivors along the way.

In the original Day of the Dead the survivors did pretty well until the biker showed up and messed up everything.

That was the original Dawn of the Dead. Day of the Dead has received no remake.

Anyway, being a lover of zombie films old and new and loving to debate over impossible hypotheticals, I have thought of this scenario many times and I do belive the best case scenation is to find an empty building with more that two stories and a flat roof and to remove the bottom stairwell, leaving all floors but the first at your disposal. Zombies will not be able to get up the gap of stairs, elaving you protection from the zombies and any humans will find your unworthwhile, considering that they would ahve to go through a horde of zombies at the bottom of the building, along with finding a way to get above the gaop in the stairs on the first floor. This enables you prtetion fomr all possible scenarios of being killed.

The main problem is that of supplies. But, this can be remedied by laying out tarps and other items that can collect rain water on the roof, filling any bath tubs of sinnks full of water as the crisis occurs and planting small gardens on the roof and next to any windows that can get enough sunlight. By having multiple stories of this building, you will be able to have enough food to sustain yourself and possibly one other person, ewmanig you can have company.

Now,i thinkt eh more intersting question is this: If zombies are slow, dumb and have to rise from the dead first, but can't come up from being buried, how on earth could they take over the planet in the first place? I mean, they may get an ainital strike first, but this will only be people at funerals adn they will most likely dispurse after seeing that happen, the people that were bit in these scenarios will beocme zomvbies and may get accompaning family members, but this is still a small number of the population. Also, considering that the average non-bitten, somewhat level headed huamsn cna probably take two zombies before they will die, it seems humans would have the number advatange, intelligence advantage, skill advantage, speed advatange, communication advantage (debatable) and technological advantage. No army in history has ever lost having all of these advantages and I don't think they would now. So, my prediction is that the zombies would be defeated within a month and that some zombie would remain, because humans would not be able to find them all, but his would cause a minor nuisance to humanity, not global destruction.

There is in fact a remake of Day of the Dead already in production and should be out sometime spring 2007 or Halloween 2007. It stars Ving Rhames, Mena Suvari, and a host of other B to C-listers. Ving Rhames will take on the role of Captain Rhodes, Mena Suvari will portray Sarah, Nick Cannon (insert Dave Chappelle indecent comment about Cannon) will play Miguel Salazar. Other than the names of some of the characters, the premise of this remake is wholly different from the original.

his is your typical zombie film, virus infects town, people start biting each other and a handfull of survivors trying to make it out of town alive. In this one the military is brought in to enforce a quarrantine on the small town of Leadsville, CO because of the mysterious virus. Once they realize it that the virus eventually makes people attack each other, it's too late, EXCEPT for few.

I'll watch it, but I already know it won't hold a candle to the original just from the description.

Again, I've made my thoughts clear on this plan of action. It's a good plan but one that shouldn't be seen as a long-term one.

Good idea in using tarps to catch rain runoff. Now that will depend on how often it rains in the area you live in. If rain comes far and few between then you will probably run out of water before the first rainfall arrives. But let's say that it rains quite often. Then water won't be an issue but food will. You can only gather and store so much food supplies before you or someone in your group has to leave the compound to look and scavenge for more supplies. Who would volunteer for such a hazardous duty?

If one was to follow the rules set down by George A. Romero, then it doesn't have to be anyone bitten and die who turns into one. Anyone who dies will become one. Those who return in places with police and military disposal units readily available could be put down easily enough. But what about the hundreds, if not thousands everyday who die alone in their homes, back alleys, nursing homes, etc... now factor in the time they die and reanimate. If it happens at night then anyone who is walking past and doesn't realize the danger is pretty much food and another soldier in a zombie population that increases geometrically.

Also, law and order will break down in time once the crisis becomes known to the public. An example of law and order breaking down due to extreme situations: Hurrican Katrina. Despite ample warning of what may occur, the situation became untenable from the moment the hurricane made landfall. Now substitute a hurricane with a menace that's more horrifying and harder to comprehend without breaking even the strongest-willed individual. That is why they spread so quickly. Man, by nature, do not work well with others. Conflict is something we are adept and experts in. And conflict is what causes the crisis to become uncontrollable quickly.
