The night sky was alight with weapons discharge. Tiny blips grew ever larger as they descended upon Johannesburg, Q'orren drop ships loaded with heavily armed, ruthless shock troops. Entire districts were already leveled; others ablaze, caught in the fury of the Q'orren offensive. Atop his perch- an office building that had itself seen better days- Felix Maizer observed what the invaders had wrought. The past few hours had seen many abnormalities occur, from his own meeting with Lizar to the sudden Q'orren attack. No matter what, Felix knew he was caught up in serious shit.

"Always looking forward to the next good war," he muttered aloud to himself as a lull came over the scene. The distant screams and chatter of gunfire were noticeable above the crackle of the raging flames. But Felix had not seen enough to shake him. Not yet. He had a mission, and he could only hope that his precious cargo was still in one piece.

___

At street level, chaos reigned. Felix traversed the dark, narrow back alleys as best he could, avoiding conflict whenever possible. He knew the city and where he had to go, but furious engagements between the brave UN troops and the Q'orren shock troops made navigating the city extremely perilous. Felix was dressed entirely in black, a hood obscuring his face which he had dabbed with camouflage paint. It was nothing he had never done before, but his heart still beat loudly and his palms and face were still drenched in nervous cold sweat.

It would be worth it. The suit was what he was after. He had stashed it in his apartment before he had run into Lizar. The powerful, augmented exoskeleton would serve to turn an ordinary man like Felix into a formidable ally to the resistance. That was if he made it there alive. If he didn't....

No skin off anyone's back, he thought. In the end, Felix Maizer was just one man. Unable to make a difference in the long run. Or was he? Bullshit. He leaped from his cover- a burning car in the middle of the street- and took off down the road, keeping his head low. The distinct zzzzzzzzzz of beam weaponry and hiss of plasma fire filled his ears, but it was not until he threw himself into a crater that Felix realized it was not directed at him. A platoon of UN troops emerged from around the block, their pulse carbines blazing. A car ahead of Felix exploded spectacularly, the 12mm explosive-tipped rounds spewed from the troopers' making for an impressive display. A Q'orren soldier came apart in a colorful mist, holes the size of soda cans punched through his power suit. The response came swiftly as auto-targeting beam weapons locked onto the advancing UN infantry.

It's a goddam suicide run! Felix thought, anger boiling inside as quick strike hyper-focused crimson beams swept across the street, turning half a dozen men into ash in a nanosecond. A moment later, a dozen more scattered into the wind, vaporized like they were nothing. The remainder of the UN platoon broke and fled, the Q'orren in hot pursuit. Felix pressed his body deep into the crater as they ran past, their boots silent on the pavement but their voices loud and confident. He closed his eyes. It had been a massacre, but the resistance had bought him a chance to move up. Pulling himself out of the crater, Felix moved on.

___

The apartment complex had partially crumbled, hit by some sort of energy weapon that had blown a hole straight through from top to bottom. If it had passed through Felix's room, then his trouble had been all for naught.

"Elevators out of order. No surprise there," he said to himself, chuckling. He took the stairs, which thankfully remained intact. Mostly, anyhow. The walls were charred from laser fire and explosive rounds. Occasionally, Felix would pass a body scorched beyond recognition or blasted to bit. Some of the wounds were so horrific they made even the hardened veteran try his best to ignore them. The Q'orren were pulling no punches, evidently. Felix had no idea what the state of the resistance was, or whether there would even still be a battle to fight by the time he got back. Too many questions, too few answers. He suppressed the thoughts. Only one thing mattered right now.

The eerie silence broke as he heard soft footsteps on the floor above. Felix paused and crouched; he carried only a KA-BAR combat knife and a silenced pistol. Anything else would have slowed him down. A voice. He grimaced. Definitely Q'orren. How many? Could be a straggler, or a fire team, or a platoon. It was impossible to tell, as the Q'orren moved swiftly and silently much of the time. Felix crept up the steps, staying in the shadows and out of the illumination of several small fires that had sprung up during the previous battle. At the top, he waited, seeing a single shadow around the corner but still unsure.

"No resistance on this level. Building might be clear," came the voice, harsh and weathered, distorted behind the shock troop's mask and battle suit. He couldn't hear the reply, but the soldier gave his acknowledgment. So, he had just missed the battle. Felix slowly drew his pistol and clicked off the safety as quietly as he could, sweat dripping down his face both from anxiety and the nearby flames. "Understood. Sweep almost complete. Notify the other teams. Rendezvous with cadre command at ground level and we will proceed," he heard.

Fuck! Judging by the Q'orren's language, there could be as many as a full company of enemy shock troops in the building. Felix dared a peek. The soldier had his back turned, and Felix was able to spot his room down the hallway, which seemed to be relatively intact. The suit was probably inside still, unless the Q'orren had found it....

He exhaled heavily. In a matter of minutes, an entire contingent of Q'orren shock troops would be passing through this level to regroup on the first floor. He could hide, but there remained one obstacle still to that course of action. Felix clenched his grip around his pistol, took a deep breath, and gritted his teeth. Taking another glance at Q'orren's shadow, he saw it moving in his direction. He had four, maybe five seconds to react.

He did so quickly, popping around the corner and firing off three quick high-velocity rounds at the trooper. His aim could have been better. The first struck the armored plate at upper chest level with a pronounced plunk! It lodged there, likely doing little damage. The second passed directly through the alien's left shoulder plate and flesh, creating a clean wound. A bloody mist marked its exit. The third and final round had almost missed entirely but by some stroke of luck, the Q'orren's reflexes had allowed him to already have his weapon raised by the time Felix squeezed the trigger a third time. The bullet punched a hole through weapon's hand and took a pair of the Q'orren's fingers with it as the weapon fell to the ground, useless.

Grunting in pain, the Q'orren was clearly impaired, but only marginally. Felix was a master of unarmed combat, but he had never fought a Q'orren shock trooper before. Several seconds had passed since he had turned the corner and taken aim. Another second passed, and the enemy was upon him with fury....

OOC: Yeah, so, an abrupt ending, but nobody wants to read a super long post I figured. Thus, I decided to make a subsequent post within the next day or two, because I intend for what happens next to be a very detailed and important scene for Felix. Hope you enjoy this one and the next post.
