PostPosted: Wed Aug 25, 2010 11:01 am    Post subject: NDR: Complete Chapter 5 Story Synopsis Reply with quote Add User to Ignore List

This has not been spell checked, proofread, or edited in any way from the rough draft as I first compiled it, but I see no reason why it should not be made public.

I approached this with the same idea as the 10 and 11 (soon to come) synopsis threads:

Quote:
In this thread I'll be providing brief summaries of each post for those of you without the time/patience (when we're over 100 posts you'll know what I mean) to read it all. This should be updated routinely. This is very basic - major names, events, facts, etc - but should be enough to get you caught up if you're behind and need to know what's going on, or want a quick refresher. Greater attention will be given to introductions and those posts intrinsic to the main plot.

001-003 - Chapter 5: Parts 1-3 by Dazeldadude on Tue Apr 7, 1998 21:03
This is the most significant post in the history of Midnight Dawn, so I recommend reading it.
Section 1: Two of Hunt's assistants, Plaster and Glass, order a plane out of the sky, and destroy it when the captain asks for official confirmation, presumably just for kicks. The huge plot twist comes immediately: Chapter 4 and the end of Chapter 3 took place in a dream world in which Hunt banished the rebels upon realizing that he could not kill them. In the two years that have past since, he has enslaved the world.
Section 2: Returning character Vera, having gained Hunt's acceptance, hacks into his inner chamber and releases the rebels using the codeword "Aekir". He, her old love, also known as Cadel, is not among them, presumably dead, but Midnight is alive.
Section 3: The truth is revealed. Hunt's mastermind project, XED, had knocked the rebels uncontious when it exploded, and from there he captured them. Hunt went on to slowly conquor the world. Hunt's lust got the better of him, and instead of killing Vera he made her his wife. Hunt created two more "projects" after XED, and locked them away in case anyone ever posed an actual challenge to his reign. The Voice, Esmerelda, had been a mere creation of Hunt to toy with and torture the captive rebels. Dale, who they'd fought in that world, was long dead, his initial destruction in Chapter 3 being his real end. No matter how hard he tried however, Hunt could not seem to kill the rebels. They were somehow protected; the last hope of the world. He hid them in his chamber and pronounced them dead, but Vera knew better. Hunt also went on to form the Ki, an elite inner circle of his best warriors. The only known members were Plaster, Glass, and Eron. Most importantly, Hunt was going insane. His desire for power and control was slowly being replaced by a desire to destroy. He was growing physically stronger for no obvious reason, and had begun killing people just for fun. (Such as the passengers Plaster and Glass obliterated.)
Section 4: Vera reveals that Hunt's fondness of her was not so random. They had known each other as children - Hunt the son of a wealthy family, she a commoner. As Alkasetzer, Andrew, Mafioso, and Shadow are released, the Ki show up. They mock the rebels, claiming that technology will destroy them, but Midnight suggests that magic is more powerful. Vera and the rebels manage to escape, and then Hunt appears and acknowledges that he let them go, for the fun of tracking them down and defeating them again. He demotes Eron for incompetence and makes Plaster the leader of the Ki.
Conclusion: Hunt withdrawls from the scene into a private study, the the source of his insanity is revealed. An avid collective of magical tomes, he has sunk into the depths of dark magic. He summons Satan and defeats him. The devil, as his parting threat, announced that the Raven Project has been released and will be Hunt's undoing.

004 - And the arrival..... by Dazeldadude on Wed Apr 8, 1998 19:08
Midnight, Setz, and Vera arrive in an abandoned Tech Research Facility being patrolled by Tretu - lizard-like guards. They meet Raven (Akira), who acts very different from the Raven they knew in the dream world (stasis). He does not remember them, and acts like a machine, telling them that his instructions have just been changed and he is now ordered to help the rebels. They all set off to destroy the Tretu infantry base.
Meanwhile, Vera's assistant Space instructs the rebels to infiltrate one of Hunt's bases (not his main headquarters) and collect information on "Aekir" and the "projects".

008 - The Marcus factor by Laserkid on Wed Apr 8, 1998 23:40

***The break at this point is not due to missing posts, but rather to some drama that ended in an author getting the boot for the first time in MD history. The post that earned an official ban, made by yours truely, was deleted and has not been preserved (thank heavens ^_^;) I was allowed to return after a few months.***

030 - Unforgiven by JasonPaul on Wed Apr 22, 1998 23:33
Raven's much more human side comes out, as he blames himself for Hunt's ability to track the rebels. It is revealed that he knew Vera before becoming a project, and that he has strong feelings for her. He sets off on his own so as not to endanger the group, hoping to find the man in charge of him becoming a "project", Dr. Tycups, and acquire information on Prodigy. (Raven begins to go by the name Trent in this post, not to be confused with the Trent from chapter 4. For the record, he is the character currently known as Akira.) It is also revealed that Setz knew Raven before he was a project. It's not clear whether this is a reference to chapter 4 or an unexplained backstory.

Keith traces fingerprints on the letter and discovers that the dead man is Dr. Tycups and the letter is connected to Project Raven. He contacts Raven, who appears on the scene. (In this post Akira Kusanagi's name appears differently again, as Raven Hisarune.)

033 - Old Ghosts by JasonPaul on Thu Apr 23, 1998 21:14
Raven discovers that his fingerprints, which also appeared on the letter, were from his old pre-project body. Raven is puzzled by the mention of Aphex, thinking that Prodigy was Tech's final "ultimate" project. Raven recalls that Tycups was researching mind transfer and reasons that he is still alive in another body. He forces Keith to come with him on the search.

034 - Of pestilence and peace by Dazeldadude on Thu Apr 23, 1998 21:54

038 - Now Trusting, Soon...Dead. by Dazeldadude on Fri Apr 24, 1998 21:27
Hunt mocks Mafioso's style as not sufficiently destructive, and looks over the death in Hunt City with glee, though he is still tormented by his inability to master the demonic tome he holds. Hunt then orders an unvaccinated group of Tech soldiers to patrol Hunt city, promising them that the virus had been extinguished, just for the pleasure of watching them die.

039 - The calm before the storm..... by MagusWX on Sat Apr 25, 1998 03:06

Having not heard from the Mobb Squadd since Hunt's virus began, Mafioso sets off for Vegas to investigate. 055 - Inner Rage...... by MagusWX on Sat May 2, 1998 00:35
Prior to leaving with Andrew, Magus confronts Amorphous about spying for Tech. Amorphous goes crazy evil and there's a big fight in which he uses mind control to make Magus kill a red shirt. When Amorphous finally leaves Hunt promises to give him a job in the Ki, any he likes, just kill whoever's currently holding that position.

056 - Fallen Angel by JasonPaul on Sat May 2, 1998 03:38
Andrew, Raven, Ibuki, and Magus set out, Magus in a protective suit and the rest naturally immune to the disease. Prodigy engages the group and has the upper hand when the post cuts off with an error message.

057 - The Escape by Shadow4000 on Sat May 2, 1998 11:49
This post was rewritten during chapter 9 as "Prison Life". I will be disregarding the (horrible) rewrite and returning the original to its proper place, but until the next archive update this entry might not match the post on record: A group of prisoners, including Ajax, a man who claims to have been Hunt's right hand man prior to Dale, escape from an island and run into Shadow, then are attacked by a Tech monster.

058 - A Wonder, a Wolf, and a War by Dazeldadude on Sat May 2, 1998 13:30
Prodigy returns to Hunt defeated, and reveals that Raven has become Aphex. Project Canis makes his first appearance, expressing disgust in Prodigy's failure. Hunt speaks of another project nearing completion that will even trump Canis, who is supposedly stronger than Aphex. Hunt says that the "truth" cannot be revealed to the rebels until he faces them personally in battle, but he sends Canis, four times more powerful than Prodigy, to the rebels to begin Phase III of Hunt's game. (The missing portion of post 056 is partly explained. Aphex experienced a malfunction and was defeated, but not before Prodigy had sustained too much damage to continue fighting the rebels. The rebels flee to Tycups' lab.)

059 - Battle with Canis by Dazeldadude on Sat May 2, 1998 22:44
Andrew and co are unable to reach the rebel base as Canis attacks, and Mafioso says he can't be bothered. Canis kills Space, but leaves Vera alive because to continue the "game".

060 - Virus Removal by JasonPaul on Sun May 3, 1998 13:43
Ibuki fixes the error that caused Aphex to malfunction.

061 - Laserkid's speed by Laserkid on Sun May 3, 1998 22:48
Marcus sets off to find a Tech terminal and mentions the Genesis program, a Lizarian invention that causes robots to malfunction and kill everything in sight. Andrew is very worried.

062 - A narrow escape by Shadow4000 on Sun May 3, 1998
This post is not in the original records. The date of May 3rd, 1998 may have been a fabrication circa 2000, but I believe it is legitimate, albeit modified: The escaping prisoners are killed by the monster, except for Ajax and Jacques. Together with Shadow, they catch a glimpse of Project Darth, a monster of unbelievable size, and are then rescued by Mack aboard the Magma II. (Mack piloted an airship for Shadow near the end of Chapter 3.) The four reach the rebel base.

063 - Air Raid by Mafioso on Mon May 4, 1998 00:35
Mafioso arrives late and gets in a scuffle with the rebels he'd left to die, but then reveals he has a trick up his sleave.

064 - Rage by JasonPaul on Mon May 4, 1998 02:14
Raven returns to protect the rebel base from future attacks. He also ends up in a standoff with Mafioso for letting Space die.

065 - The Meeting by Shadow4000 on Mon May 4, 1998 18:51
Shadow suggests that perhaps no one can find Aekir because he's going to be Hunt's next project. Then Darth begins to approach the rebel base; he is as tall as a building. (As in 057, the 2000 era rewrite of this post should be disregarded.)

066 - Friends by JasonPaul on Mon May 4, 1998 20:24
As Darth approaches, Raven explains some backstory to Shadow (because I completely mix up/ignore the plot in 065). Raven goes out to face Darth alone.

067 - The Darth Project by Shadow4000 on Tue May 5, 1998 07:26
Raven engages Darth just to discover that this "project" doesn't exist. Hunt mocks the rebels for being so gullible; it was a hologram all along. (Again, 2000 revisions are misleading/wrong and should be ignored.)

068 - Ajax by Shadow4000 on Tue May 5, 1998 21:50
Ajax gets fed up with the rebels and sets off to tackle Hunt on his own. The rebels consider using him as a decoy to sneak in from behind.

069 - The Final Straw by JasonPaul on Tue May 5, 1998 21:59
It turns out Hunt used the Darth "project" as a decoy to kidnap Ibuki. Raven decides to set off for Hunt City, and gives the group twelve hours to decide if they're coming with him.

070 - Morphis and Morphius. by MagusWX on Wed May 6, 1998 18:59
Magus snoops over some Tech files and finds more than he bargained for. The effects on him earlier were not mere mind control. He and Amorphous were actually two Tech projects, known as Morphis and Morphius. Realizing the potential danger, Magus begins to take a serum to suppress the Tech project within him. At this point Lydia and Magus are obviously interested in one another, though he has yet to see her.

071 - Exodus by JasonPaul on Wed May 6, 1998 21:40
Raven and Magus set off for Hunt City. Surprisingly, Mafioso agrees to lend a hand. (Note: This marks the beginning of the final battle of Ch5 Part 1)

072 - Never underestimate.... by Mafioso on Wed May 6, 1998 23:24

073 - Divide and Conquer by JasonPaul on Thu May 7, 1998 18:59
Raven and Magus meet up with The Underestimated, and they split up to assault the three towers of Hunt's headquarters. (Hunt City is New York. This was never quite clear until now.)

083 - Magma by Shadow4000 on Sat May 9, 1998 15:22
(This post was sorted out of order originally, in 1998, presumably to better follow the chronological order of events. I will leave it as such.)
Shadow and co show up after all, and between the Magma and the Enterprise (Mafioso's ship) they continue to distract Hunt's defenses.

079 - Bloodlines by JasonPaul on Fri May 8, 1998 22:21

084 - Magus's Last stand? by MagusWX on Sat May 9, 1998 22:00
Magus and Amorphous have a showdown, and Amorphous seems to die.

085 - Countdown by Shadow4000 on Sat May 9, 1998 22:18
With the generators down, the next step is to take out the main building's armor. Shadow, Gades, and Underestimated member Dion break in and find a bloodbath. Ajax is there, tearing Tech limb from limb, swearing to avenge his family's death. Jacques appears and turns out to be a Tech spy. Ajax leaps on him, but it turns out to be a hologram and he goes flying out a 50 story window. Meanwhile, Cid and Mack discuss the Twin Ray, two cannons located on the east and west towers which could combine to blow both airships into oblivion. Calculating when it will fire, they plan to fly one of the airships kamikaze into the central tower, forcing it to fire upon the Hunt Building itself. Shadow and co manage to lower the building's shields and find themselves in the third tower when Hunt informs them that he will be detonating it in two minutes. They retreat into the main building just as the tower explodes. As the shields drop and the Twin Ray is readied, Mack insists on going instead of Cid, and flies the Magma on a suicide mission into the lower levels of the Hunt building just as Hunt's cannons fire on him. Mack, the Magma, Jacques, and every Tech employee in the bottom half of the building explodes, and thus ends my most epic relevant Midnight Dawn post. >_>

090 - Human Chess by JasonPaul on Mon May 11, 1998 17:44
Prodigy defeats Raven by toying with his emotions, but then walks away and allows him to continue on to the final confrontation.

091-092 - Hunt's End by Dazeldadude on Thu May 14, 1998 16:58
Like post 001, this post should be read in its entirety, however here goes:
The Lord of Darkness gets the last laugh as Hunt fails to master his tome. He stands atop his ruined tower, his men dying below, his technology falling to pieces from a computer virus created by Mafioso... Setz and Mafioso reach the madman first. Hunt gets flustered as he learns that his Tretu have also been defeated, but he insists the rebels have underestimated him. One by one they arrive: Vera, Magus, Midnight, Raven, Andrew, Marcus, Shadow, each having tackled one more of Hunt's precious creations in the process. Shadow hands him Prodigy's head, and then Hunt declairs the final round in his long, sick game. The room fades out, and Hunt becomes Project Serenity.
...Hunt is defeated. If you care to know how, read the post. I can't describe it.
Aekir appears, and reveals the unusual fact that he and Setz are both members of the Ki, and that the Ki created Hunt. Hunt had gotten out of their control, but things are stable now. Aekir offers Vera and the rebels an opportunity to join the Ki, but warns that if they don't he has duties to fulfill which might put them at odds. The rebels consider joining temporarily, in order to get the upper hand and defeat the Ki.
A serum is distributed that puts an end to Hunt's virus.

***At this point a large number of posts are missing from the archive, ranging from May 22 to June 9. According to a log circa 2000, the following events are missing. Until something older is produced, we'll have to take this as gospal. I certainly don't remember better in 2010. >_>):
1) Mafioso planned to attack the Ki with his Evil Oranges during a parade..... and he used a Jimmy Buffet midi. o_O
2) Raven and a few others agreed to help him (I think)
3) Magus defeated Amorphous and rescued Lydia. The three returned to LA.
4) Me and Magus, along with Raven, Maf, and a few others attacked the Ki. As it was a secret mission, it wasn't found out that most of us were involved. However Raven did encounter and attacked Alkasetzer, leaving a huge mark on him with his talons.

5) An attempt was made to assassinate Aekir. It failed, but he did take a bullet. No one knew who shot him, but he accused the rebels, ruining their public image. Mafioso made it out safely.
6) Aekir used this attack to his advantage by hanging some Underestimated members, in order to appease the public. He told the people that they were the terrorists, and also made a "fake" execution of Vera in order to lore Raven back.
7) Raven, Shadow, and Magus rescued Vera and escaped before the execution. The four and Lydia ran off and are in hiding. Laserkid is with Mafioso, and Midnight remained with the Ki.
8) Some comic relief was added to the chapter in the form of Vincent, Dobson, and Claude. They set off from the Ki on a pathetic mission to capture the resistance.
9) Aekir is revealed to be Midnight's brother.***

Dr. Quacy of all people shows up and gets Midnight and Setz out of harm's way. He convinces the two to help him find Shadow.

They agree to continue together in the hopes of reuniting with the rebels, but before they continue Midnight confronts Setz with the ultimate question: Which side is he really on?

146 - Setz' Life... by Alkasetzer on Mon June 29, 1998 18:18
Setz reveals that his age is deceiving; The Ki administered a serum on him that preserves him from aging, though he can still die in combat. The Ki created Hunt as a weapon, but he overcame them, inventing a virus that could kill their own ranks, and when the Ki ejected him from the planet he used it to conquor Lizar. He was forced to keep his opinions and history a secret, but he had long lost faith in Aekir and the Ki. The two then reason that Jackal, who had hired Steel Dragon, was the man who had actually attempted to assassinate Aekir. They continue on their search for Shadow and co.

Raven and Vera barely get out alive, and go off to find Midnight. Aekir heads to Hunt City to learn the truth about himself, as tormented as Midnight at the thought that Hunt might really be his father.

At the end he finally finds Quacy, who explains that Darkness is gone, for good. Shadow suddenly wakes up in a medical ward. The rebels inform him that he'd been hit when they touched down and they'd immediately pulled out. Quacy again turns out to be just an illusion, a voice in Shadow's head, but at last he can give up his search for Darkness and live in peace. (In a rare change of pace I will be retaining the 2000 rewrite of this post in the official archive. The events do not change but are much more clear in the rewrite.)

Completely insane, he plans to misuse the Ki for his own evil aims. The group escapes on board Cid's new airship, Aekir temporarily on their side. As Hunt refocuses his efforts on his other son, Esmerelda, Wretch, and Aekir reappear in the spirit world and command Midnight to destroy the statue. He does so, defeating Hunt for good. As the rest of the rebels materialize around him, Wretch's soul is set free, Aekir is forgiven, and Esmerelda too departs into the afterlife. The rebels return to the airship and celebrate their victory, while Midnight pays his last respects to his mother and brother.

(This four part Ch5 epilogue was written over the course of August (well into the start of Ch6) and is rather crucial to events in ChZ and Shadow's eventual death at the end of Ch8. This epilogue is 43 pages long, so bear with me.)
Kirin, Givorn, and Tyre at the Ki headquarters see their organization as finished, with the rebels, Aekir, Jakal, and the Underestimated all against them now. The base is then attacked, but not by any of these four. A single man breaks into Kirin's office. Kirin is shocked that he is alive. The man laughs and murders him.
As word of Kirin's death spreads, three more Ki officers, Jerrid, Prince, and Dalton, discuss the situation. Jerrid tells Prince in private to forget about the Ki's image at this point; they only need to hold out long enough to "get the money" then they can split, but Prince doesn't know what he's talking about. He is apparently not in on this scheme.
Prince and another officer, Glenn, mistake the invader as Aekir, but Jerrid and Dalton discuss the situation privately and conclude that it is another man, who they saw die years ago but must have somehow survived.
Givorn recovers, and Jerrid and Dalton tell him to keep his mouth shut so their scheme doesn't come out. This invader is somehow linked to their plot, and immensely powerful.
An army materializes out of nothing and attacks the Ki base in force. When the Ki resistance fails, Dalton, Prince, and Givorn reveal their scheme to Glenn: This location was chosen for the Ki base because it houses a secret, ancient weapon. Ultimately determining that it was of little use beyond preventing a direct assault, a few Ki officers had conspired to sell it, but now they would have to use it for survival. As Dalton, Glenn, and Givorn command the remaining troops to hold off the army, Jerrid and Prince lead an attack against the man who killed Kirin. He almost completely whipes them out before temporarily retreating.
The Ki team witness their public support fade to zero as Dion of the Underestimated explains the truth about Aekir to the world in a press conference, but they have more immediate concerns. Givorn calls for a full evacuation of the base, recognizing that their situation is lost, hoping that his men can at least get out alive. Jerrid, furious that Givorn is abandoning their arms deal that would net them millions, resigns and storms out of the war room.
As Dalton issues the orders, Jerrid appears and denounces him as a traitor. Unaware of his dismissal from the Ki, the soldiers obey his superior orders and lock Dalton up.
As the Ki soldiers march into battle rather than evacuating, they are all slaughtered. Jerrid rushes to the mortified Ki leaders (Tyre has now recovered and is among them) and claims that Dalton treturously ordered the assault. The group believe him and welcome him back.
Dalton attempts to contact Givorn from prison, but Givorn rejects the call and orders his execution. He dives into a sewer drain and takes a bullet in the back before landing in an underground river.

Before the weapon can be fired a key must be retreived from the old Hunt building. Tyre, Glenn, and Prince decide to go retrieve it, leaving Jerrid in charge of the troops while Givorn begins the evacuation. Jerrid allows more troops to die needlessly, irritating Givorn.
Dalton somehow survives, and begins searching for a way back to the Ki base. As he travels the sewers he finds Glass's corpse.
***Everything from here own was rewritten in 1999, during Chapter Z. The original is no longer available.***
Tyre splits off from Glenn and Prince as they raid the remains of the Hunt building. Tyre mentions that he, Kirin, Givorn, Jerrid, and Dalton had snuck into the building once before, while Hunt was still in power. (Presumably then, these five are the ones who were in on the conspiracy to sell the Ki's secret weapon.)
Glenn and Prince fail to find the key. As they return to the bottom floor, they find Tyne dead...
The mysterious army finally reaches the main Ki compound, and as soldier come face to face they realize that this is no normal army. They are fighting against skeletons, demons, and the undead. Givorn realizes that evacuation orders have still not been issued and sounds the alarm, but by then it is too late. He and a few survivors find themselves cornered.
Dalton meanwhile makes it back to the base and sneaks into the weapon's storage area during the chaos. Far from being ready to fire, needing only a key, he finds that it is not even plugged in. Jerrid arrives and as the two fight it is revealed that the man who invaded is Krow, the same man they had agreed to sell the weapon to and the same man who they thought had died two years ago. (Krow, at least within the dream world of late ch3/ch4, was Darkness's highest general.) Jerrid knew full well the Ki couldn't win, but he was hoping to buy time to escape with the weapon and hold it for bargaining power.

214 - Devil Avatar: Part III by Shadow4000 in Aug 1998
As Givorn breaks out and tries to fight his way through the base, he discovers that Jerrid was the real traitor.
Glenn and Prince come face to face with Krow (unlike they others, they have never met or heard of him before.) Krow tells them that he is killing the Ki because he has to, not because he wants to, but he might as well enjoy it. Had the Ki soldiers retreated, not attacked, Krow would have let them go, but he wanted that weapon, he wanted control of the base, and he had an old score to settle with Kirin and a few others. He says that he has an especially unpleasant death in store for Jerrid, and then lets Glenn and Prince go.
Givorn's leadership shines through as he begins to successfully rally the remaining men and fight back the undead army. Krow then appears before him. Givorn asks how he is still alive, and he says that Z (the weapon everyone talks about, confusingly once represented as an actual character in Ch3) and others like it are not merely weapons, but have regenerating powers that make their wielders capable of recovering from nearly any wound. Krow is, effectively, immortal. Krow explains to all present the reason for his attack.
Hunt had acquired an "item" that belonged to Krow, and he had hired Kirin, Givorn, Tyre, Dalton, and Jerrid of the Ki to help him retrieve it. When events went sour and Krow appeared to die, Kirin and co made off with the item and kept it for themselves, looking to sell it. (This item is Z, the "weapon", though it is rather poorly physically described. This section suggests that it is very small, not a giant cannon or anything.)
As Krow approaches Givorn to take revenge, the tower Dalton and Jerrid had been fighting on comes crashing through the ceiling, blown off its foundation while the two were fighting. It lands directly onto Krow, who immediately recovers and locks his eyes on Jerrid. Jerrid takes off running and Krow follows. His undead army resumes their attack.
Dalton, heroic to the end, continues to fight to save his Ki comrades, though he has been shot, nearly drowned, and horribly broken in the fall of the tower. But the zombies close in, and one bites into his neck.

215 - Devil Avatar: Part IV by Shadow4000 in Aug 1998
Dalton uses a knife to cut off his own flesh where the zombies bite him, and he and Givorn miraculously escape the building.
Krow confronts Jerrid, and presents seemingly contraditory intentions. He explains that Darkness is locked away within the Z "weapon" and that he will soon be able to revive and summon him, yet he shows sympathy for the innocent members of Ki who have died in his assault. Perhaps there is more to this entity called "Darkness" than power and evil.
Krow and Jerrid fight, and the match proves at first to be fairly even, but Krow gets the upper hand and injects Jerrid with a modified, non-contagious form of Hunt's virus. He dies in misery.
Dalton, Givorn, Glenn, and Prince set out on foot away from the nightmare that has consumed their old headquarters. Krow won, and the Ki have been irradicated, but the world will move on.
