[p:59hhkqjw]"Woooo!" a chorus of cheers went up as a man calling himself Sledgehammer pummeled his opponent into submission. This audience was not in the stands however. They were watching the events aboard the Enterprise, through a magnified glass panel in the floor that gave them a perfect up-close overhead view of the arena. This unique method of observation had its precursor on the Enterprise V's prototype, the Wyvern, which was fitted with a few glass bubbles that provided a huge range of vision. Where the original design only served the airship's three leaders, this new one seated dozens, and supplemented the overhead view with well-positioned televisions showing the live broadcast feed.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]It had been at the God of Fight tournament six years ago that Gades first experienced the Wyvern airship that his newest model Enterprise replicated. Back then it belonged to a splinter mob that shared the ship's name. Cid Highwind, who had left the Freedom Fighters a few years prior, commanded it alongside two other men, and had flown to Johannesburg during the tournament to hash out some illegal black market trades. He'd since cleaned up his act of course, for the most part...[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]The tournament always brought out the seediest organizations in society. It was run by Akigiyama, after all. It had developed a unique tradition over the years however, as a place where rivalries could be set aside. Quintin Kaiser craftily used the event as an opportunity to display his own hegemony in the criminal underworld by allowing his enemies to pass freely on his turf. People like Lionel Johnson would be welcome here, but only for the duration of the event. It was something of a gangsters' convention. Behind the tournament fighting, deals were being made, territorial lines redrawn, truces and rivalries renewed. But violence beyond the arena floor was minimized; If you broke with the unwritten code and murdered a rival leader here, you would be number one on Akigiyama's hit list, and Kaiser had a veritable army at the ready for anyone managing to reach that height. As a result, events surrounding the tournament rarely escalated, and while no tournament had yet passed without at least one unnatural death in Johannesburg, the numbers were way down from earlier years.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]God of Fight IV, held in 2006, had been the bloodiest. Six actual contestants died that year. Killing an opponent was always grounds for immediate disqualification, but under Anikonio III, who lead Akigiyama until his death a few weeks later, the rules were not so strictly adhered to. Khali Ventrue and Mafioso were both permitted to advance multiple times despite killing their opponents, a particularly dark point in the Freedom Fighters' long history. (Mafioso at the time and Khali afterwards were allies of the Fighters.) As if the murders hadn't been enough, Anikonio himself stepped in during the final round, between Midnight and Akira Kusanagi, and knocked both of them out of the match. The dramatic display simultaneously thrilled the fans and disgusted the bookies, who were left in the dark for weeks before a panel of judges finally granted the official title to Akira.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]Since then, things were more streamlined. Violence erupted at God of Fight V that lead to a massive shake-up in the criminal underworld, but unlike IV these events had no media attention and, while initiated in Johannesburg, were fought out across the skies far from Akigiyama territory. During this time Mafioso and his Underestimated were definitively destroyed, eliminating Akigiyama's only formidable rival, while a smaller three-way mob war that included the Wyvern resulted in the collapse of all three, with Cid ultimately returning to the Freedom Fighters and bringing the severely damaged remains of his airship with him.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]Yet if the tournament was associated with any one thing more than criminal organizations, it was the Freedom Fighters. Not only did a member of the team win in three consecutive tournaments between 2006 and 2010, but individuals associated with the group took ten out of twelve spots in the top four during this stretch. As the most powerful fighters on earth, it was their show until the group collectively sat out God of Fight VII in 2012. With the unusual reappearance of Alkasetzer, at least one former fighter was advancing to the second round in 2014, and others were still preparing to compete in their first match.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]Glenn Franklin for one, a former competitor who was sitting out this year, believed in the tournament for two reasons. First of all it helped to bring the world together, with an international popularity on par with the Olympics, or even the World Cup of the pre-Tech era, and secondly, it proved to the world that the Fighters were still a force to be reckoned with. If there was any doubt about their effectiveness, dominating the God of Fight tournament laid it to rest. He was enjoying the view from above at the moment, though many of the Fighters were in the stands. They were free to come and go throughout the event.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"Sir, I've got some interesting information pertaining to that Q'orren visit," a member of the crew stated, walking into the viewing bay.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"Oh? What's up?" Gades Short looked up.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"I was checking over some of our atmospheric gauges, just a routine check, and I noticed some extremely unusual readings when they appeared in the sky," he explained.[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"Well I would expect things to be a little off. Who knows what kind of magic or technology they used to make that appearance."[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"Yes well, I still think it's worth noting that pressure sensors indicated an enormous mass present far above the earth and directly above the arena for the brief duration of their message. The data would take a few days of analysis to really tell us anything worth while, but I think it's safe to say whoever these guys are, there are a whole bunch of them."[/p:59hhkqjw]
[p:59hhkqjw]"Interesting. Well, pass the information and data on to Andrew Lizar, but don't get too worked up about it. If these guys had the power and desire to fight us they wouldn't have blown the element of surprise."[/p:59hhkqjw]

NDR: The current tournament is God of Fight VIII. If any new authors want to claim the previous tournament for their character, go right ahead. It was never written about, so the events therein are currently up for grabs.
