Easily the best RPG ever created.

The Official Trailer
Quote:
The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041, a day so painful to some that it is referred to only as the "B-Ballnacht". Thousands upon thousands of the world's greatest ballers were massacred in a swath of violence and sports bigotry as the game was outlawed worldwide. The reason: the Chaos Dunk, a jam so powerful its mere existence threatens the balance of chaos and order. Among the few ballers and fans that survived the basketball genocide was Charles Barkley, the man capable of performing the "Verboten Jam"...

Flash forward 12 years to the post-cyberpocalyptic ruins of Neo New York, 2053. A Chaos Dunk rocks the island of Manhattan, killing 15 million. When the finger is put on the aging Charles Barkley, he must evade the capture of the B-Ball Removal Department, led by former friend and baller Michael Jordan, and disappear into the dangerous underground of the post-cyberpocalypse to clear his name and find out the mysterious truth behind the Chaos Dunk. Joined by allies along the way, including his son Hoopz, Barkley must face the dangers of a life he thought he gave up a long time ago and discover the secrets behind the terrorist organization B.L.O.O.D.M.O.S.E.S.

Let me say first that Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden has received a major overhaul since the original demo. It's based on Game Maker now, not RPG Maker, and the graphics have been considerably improved from the SNES Final Fantasy-esque sprites of yore.

This game takes many of the good points of various RPGs, plays with them a bit, and squeezes them into a tight package. Since this was designed by English speakers, there are no translation or localization mishaps. In fact, for a satire of Japanese RPGs, the writing's actually, dare I say it...good. If you roll with the blatantly ridiculous premise, you might find the characters to actually be moving and yourself sympathetic to their plight, which is something I can't say of many RPGs. Oh yeah, and there's lots of humor, though that's to be expected.

Combat in Barkley is similar to the Mario RPGs—turn-based with timed hits. However, in this game, every character has a completely different set of attacks, each with their own power-up microgame. Barkley is also one of a few games where stat modifiers and status effects are actually useful. Combat is initiated by running into the enemy Earthbound style—no random battles here. If you're quick and clever, you can force a sneak attack on nearly every opponent in the game, and even bypass them entirely.

It's short enough to never wear out its welcome, and best of all it's 100% free.

I really feel that RPG developers need to play this game and look closely at what makes it so good.
