The Ruins

The Ruins was a horror novel which came out during the summer of 2006 and became a big runaway seller. The premise was quite simple. A group of young people vacationing in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico decide to take a small excursion to see some ancient Mayan ruins. What they find there is more than just sightseeing.

The novel was pretty good in that it emphasized suspense with minimal exposition trying to explain backstory and motivations of each and every person who happens to appear in the story. Once the secret and danger of the ruins they come across slowly reveals itself the novel doesn't let off the gas in terms of suspense. The book doesn't give the reader the chance to take a breather. I'm hoping the film does the same when it comes out sometime around April 2008.
