After more than a decade of absence, the Seiken Densetsu series is back.
Trailer
Many people remember playing Secret of Mana for the first time around 14 years ago. That game is a classic and for some people (myself included) it got them started in the RPG fandom. The last real Mana game that most people were able to play was Seiken Densetsu 3 and that was by SNES emulator.
Since then, we’ve had a remake of Final Fantasy Adventure which was the first true Mana game, but that was nothing new. Children of Mana was a dungeon crawler and it wasn’t connected to the main Mana storyline.
According to different sources, this game is a prequel to the entire series. They say that we’ll find out the origins of Mana and the mystery of a certain enemy with a name that fans of the series might remember. I’m not going to say it because it’s a spoiler and just in case it’s somehow a different person with the same name.
This game looks like a cell shaded version of Final Fantasy 9, but it plays almost like Musashi Samurai Legend/Kingdom Hearts. Not really a surprise seeing as Square made all these games. It looks like you get more points and exp for using the backgrounds to attack. It makes me wonder if this game is going to be purely a platformer. It looks interesting.
It doesn’t look like there are other characters fighting though. Seems like you’re going solo. I know for a fact that the elements (shade, Wisp, Undine, etc.) are back, but I don’t know what they do in this game.
This game is out next month for those interested in picking up the series again. I’m not sure if it will be as good as the last two games, but if you have played them both, I’m sure you’d like to play the game just to see how everything connects. _________________

I think Game Informer already reviewed it and both reviewers gave it a 7, which is pretty low for any japanese rpg. But since Square is gona over charge for their games when just about all other PS2 games are priced at $39.99 or below, I'm not getting this game on release anyways. _________________ SAVE A.D. - S.O.B.s

Huh? What games are you buying? Most PS2 games are priced at 40-50 dollars. And most RPGs are too well received in the United States, if it's not Final Fantasy, it's not as good. _________________

most companies are pricing PS2 games below $39.99 nowadays, very few still don't like NIS and Square, yet they both over produce all of their games anyways and have to price cut in just a few months after release due to overstock, which is why I never buy their games anymore. you say they are not well received? square games gets reviewed just fine, most square rpgs of recent years scores at least over 75 or 80% _________________ SAVE A.D. - S.O.B.s

I cant wait for this game. I loved Secret of Mana and Legend of mana. Although, I hope Dawn of Mana is not as much of a dissapoint as Legend of Mana was. _________________

This is interesting, lets hope they remain loyal to their roots and don't stray too much, people who have waited 10 years won't be waiting for a completely different game.

7/10 is pretty good. If you enjoy these types of RPGs, than I'm sure that you will enjoy it. I tend to trust Game Informer's reviewer more than other magazines-- but still. I know when Game Informer gives 7's, they don;t mean the game is bad, just that, while it's a pretty good game, it may not appeal to all American gamers. Which is pretty understandable for a Japanese RPG. I still don't think this game should be overlooked-- the PS2 still has some life in it. ^^ _________________

Yeah? Like I said, if it's not Final Fantasy (SQUARE), then it's not as good. _________________

This game was critically panned in Japan, and you can still find some people griping about it on its board at GameFAQs.
Skipping it, instead opting to go for Heroes of Mana, which has been well-received. |

Personally speaking, I thought Dawn of Mana was actually quite bad compared to the other Seiken Densetsu's.
I was actually VERY disappointed with the game, the battle system takes way too much time and that in turn makes the game boring. The ONLY reason to really play the game is to keep up with the fandom and stay loyal to it .

Actually Square-enix was in charge of Dawn of Mana.. I suppose they just simply didn't live up to expectations? ^^ _________________

I think you guys forgot Sword of Mana for the GBA. That was released a few years ago, I think. But it was also a dungeon crawler... maybe? I don't remember much about it, let alone its plot. Perhaps it was also not related to the series...
I haven't liked any Mana games since Secret of Mana (I wish they'd bleedin' port that), so I dunno about picking this up (and I've heard it's actually pretty bad). _________________ "Oh my god--"
