I've heard the lovely saying of "for every check, put ten percent in your savings account" or some such. Most of my bills eat into my cha-ching, though, so saving gets difficult... curse you school, raising fees this fall semester.
Aside from that, I don't have a debit card (mostly on purpose, but also because I'm so damn lazy I haven't gotten one), just an ATM card. If I want money, I have to take it out in twenties, which I typically don't like doing.
I also set limits for myself on how much I can spend, and when my next check is deposited, I put all the 'leftovers' in my savings account.
That being said, my savings account isn't linked to my ATM card, so I can't access it through the card itself, only online. This is helpful to me, since I'm morbidly lazy and generally once something goes in my savings account, it stays there.
Basically it comes down to self-control for me, which I tend to excel at, so it's not hard so much as... dammit, I don't make enough to put as much as I want in savings.
Credit cards aren't scary to me because I don't really use mine. I just wanted to build up my credit so I can get a car/house/planet when I'm older. _________________ "Oh my god--"
