Are you sure the player doesn't have to be moving on the world map to recruit the squirrel, thats the first time I've ever heard he can stand still and still recruit him.

i'm not sure if that is true but it probably is. the squirrels can join your party even when your not in a battle. but it doesn't hurt to try.

100% sure. That's how I always get the squirrels. I never bothered spending hours moving back and forth in the world map. ^^
