I was in a post elsewhere here, and somebody mentioned something about how they liked a couple of mini games in other games.
Then I also realized that I hadn't seen any threads relating just to mini-games or side quests, and which ones poeple thought were some of the best ones.
So, what are your favorite mini-games and side quests in any games, and what is it that makes them favorites?
I will post later, because there are quite a few games out there, and I will have to think on this one. :? |

Whew, that's going to take a while. There's so many.
Xenosaga's Card game was very funa and challenging. It's not as complicated as some of the card games out there, but you need enough skill to actually balance your deck and hopfully pull off a win. It's the only reason I play Xenosaga at all.
Star Ocean's vs. mode is pretty intersting provided you have a friend to play with you. I do have to say that the moves are limited and you can't pick your own skills, but it's nice when you need to get away from the main game. the series has also always had its share of interesting Fighting Arenas. that's been taken to the next level with the Ranking system in the fighting Arena.
Suikoden's Chinchirorin and fishing games are always fun to waste time on. You get money and fish for food respectively. But the greatest mini-game of all time is the Cooking Contest with Hai-Yo.
Disgaea's fight with Baal was an good sidequest to test the mettle of your characters. I mean who wants to fight someone at level 4000? After he wiped the floor with my characters, I just caught some high level Flamebergs to deal with him.
Super Mario RPG for the SNES has the dreaded 30 and 100 super jumps to conquer. I actually though that was fun even though I never got past 31. Also, the fight with Culex brings back the boss battle theme from Final Fantasy 4.
This isn't really a sidequest, but since it doesn't necessarilly comes in the main game either, I'll put it here. The Mirage Palace from Seiken Densetsu 3 is the image of what I envision a final dungeon to be. It's real form has a dark feel, but in numerous times the dungeon shows you images of places you've been before to mentally psych you out.
Final Fantasy X and X-2 had blitzball which I clocked an nourmous amount of time for both games. I still haven't forgiven FFX for it's stupid Chocobo minigame in order to unlock Tidus' Caladbolg to it's greatest potential. Seriously, finish the race in 0 seconds by getting ballooons and avoiding those stupid birds. I almost tore the controller in half. _________________

Just to list a few that come to my mind:
Suikoden I: Chinchirorin was pretty fun. Plus it provided easy money.
Suikoden II: Cooking Contests, rock climbing, fishing, lots of good ones. I didn't like Chinchirorin as much since you couldn't in any way bet more than 3000 potch.
Final Fantasy VII: The Gold Saucer. I'd say I spend almost half my time every game in the Gold Saucer.
Final Fantasy VIII: Triple Triad. That's the best card game the series has. It's not too difficult, but it can still be challenging. Althought the "Random" rule does tend to give the game extreme suckage.
Final Fantasy IX: Chocobo Hot and Cold. Best chocobo mini game of the series.
Final Fantasy X: Blitzball. Allot of people hated it, but I thought it was fun. Plus, it payed off not having to fret about getting Wakka's ultimate weapon when the opprotunity came up.
Xenosage: The card game was fun. Although getting the better cards was almost as frustrating as attempting to get good cards in REAL life.
Star Ocean The Second Story: Item Creation. Nothing like having the Eternal Sphere five hours into the game. Also, pickpocketing was fun. _________________

Minigames are inherently evil and should be eliminated from the face of the planet. Every time a game forces a minigame on someone, thousands of kittens (or puppies, if you prefer) die horrible, bloody deaths.
If I wanted to fish I would buy a fishing game. If I wanted to race I would buy a racing game. I bought an RPG so I want to play an RPG. I have quit games in the past because of minigames and might very well do so in the future.
Thus, my favorite minigame is the one that isn't there. |

I loved the card game in FFVIII, before I got Suikoden II, it had to be my favourite mini-game. It was extremely addicting.
However the cook-off in Suikoden II has to be the hands-down champion of mini-games. It was simply perfect; original, clever and addictive.
Picking the best sub-quest in harder, but I'd probably say the golden chocobo quest in FFVII.
The worst mini-game must be the butterfly game in FFX closely followed IMO by the card game and chocobo hot and cold in FFIX. |

Final Fantasy X's Blitzball had the potential to be one of the greatest mini-games of all time. While Blitzball was fun and I did spend 15 hours just playing Blitzball on my first couple days playing the game it really could have been a lot better. If you could have manuvered the characters more than you were able to and attack freely without these huge confrontations and mathmatical systems involved it would have been great. However, if they really went into it Blitzball would have become more of a regular game rather than a mini-game. All in all I would have to say Blitzball was my favorite just because I never really got into the mini-games that much. Final Fantasy 7's Snowboarding game would have to be second. |

well i like mini games but forme they are meant to be minigemes, not a part of the scenario in the RPG ... like final fantasy x-2... i kinda liked it ... but if you have to make all the mini quest to beat the games it not a rpg anymore, it an arcade games... plsu what i really hated was the fatc that they made this one a real charlies angel version of final fantasy.. so Guys are stupid and only think of making things difficult while girls are superior exept if they are the bad ones.... _________________ " humans are like monkeys with no shaggies." |

I don't think I have one favorite mini-game or sidequest that stood out compared to the others that I like. As much as I like cooking mini-game in Suikoden 2, it could be loads better than that. And as much as I like Chocobo Hot and Cold from Final Fantasy IX, it's a bit troublesome as well to find the treasures without having to explore practically all the world map (though it gives a perfect reason to really explore, hehe). _________________

I prefer mini-games that enhance the RPG experience instead of becoming the one obstacle between you and a satisfactory completion of a game.
Final Fantasy X's Lightning Dodging and Butterfly Hunt were nightmares. I like Triple Triad a lot though. Star Ocean's Item Creation is too costly to be enjoyable. Breath of Fire's fishing game is a bit boring. I usually keep out of casino-like areas in games... I don't find them to be worthwhile at all.
The ones I like in Suikoden include Gaspar's Chinchirorin, Hai Yo's Cook-off, Nadir's Theater, and maybe Rita's Ritapon. Those duels and war battles are awesome too, even if they are a bit too story-driven in Suikoden II. I absolutely abhor those time-wasting Lottery in Suikoden III... |

Did I miss a mini-game? Was that in Suikoden I, II or III?
My favourite mini-game was easily the Chocobo side-quest in Final Fantasy VIII on the pocket station. That was just so funny! Shame nobody else has it here so I can't battle with it; but it's fun to use the summon back in the game when he's at his FULL power! _________________

It's in Suikoden IV (not sure if it's allowed to post that or not, eep).

Really? I always thought that it's okay enough to make it worthy.

Hmm... not sure which one you're talking about, but I find it a bit hard to really get the good fishes. I usually gave up trying to find the rare fishes. Too hard to find. =( But it's quite enjoyable to play the fishing game in BoF4.

Not sure about the other games, but I find Dragon Warrior VII's casino is definitely worth it. The Sacred Armors are only obtainable through the casino and while they aren't the strongest armor in the game, but the ability to heal 50 HP every turn make them very much the best armor in the game IMO. _________________

*Posts after skimming through the topic, so I might have missed something*
My favourites are Chocobo Hot and Cold(Final Fantasy 9), Triple Triad card game(Final Fantasy VIII*) and fishing(Breath of Fire 3).
*I had to use roman numberals, since 8 + ) makes a smiley. _________________

Suikoden 2's cook out game and FF8's card game were the two best mini-games I've played. The reason they're good is that the prizes you win really have nothing to do with the main quest aside from allowing you to become better at the mini game. In S2 you win more recipes which can be used in future games and in FF8 you win cards to be able to play more card games. The other key ingredient they both include is that they're very fun to play.
I, like a few mentioned hate when games force mini-games on you. Like forcing you to dodge lighting 200? times in order to get a sigil. Some games take mini-games too far and make them a necessary part of the game in order to go farther. It's hard to call them mini-games when they're so embedded in the game itself. One such mini-game was the gunner platform in Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic. I mean you could die in that "mini-game" and were never given a choice of whether you wanted to play or not... _________________ ______ "We're still flying"

Hands down, the best mini game in my opinion has to be Triple Triad in FF8. Not only was it a challenging and winnable game, it tied in with the game in a big way. The amount of things that could be acomplished just by participating in the card game, was by far the biggest impact I've seen a mini-game have on gameplay. By refining the cards after you aquired them, and then further refining the items that the cards translated into, you could get some good magic and items not possible or hard to get by other means.
The cooking game in Suiko 2 was my second favorite mini-game. The only gripe I had with it was, you pretty much had only certain recipes that you had to use to win in later cook-offs. It would have been nice if they could've found a way to use more of the recipes, as recipes you could actualy win with.
I also didn't mind the chocobo puzzles in FF8. They were pretty good and decently challenging, but nothing spectacular.
The Ruby Weapon in FF7 was always fun to try and beat. When battling the Ruby you could use a couple of tricks on it, unlike the Emerald weapon, with who you pretty much had to have Knights of the Round to beat it.
While the Vincent side quest in FF7 wasn't exactly hard or fun, it was fairly interesting to get a side character, and get background on him.
I liked the Silent Patient sq in Xenosaga also just because I thought it was interesting and kinda cute.
Network Casino in Xenosaga was probably the best gambling mini-game I've played. So yeah, I liked that one ok too.
If you count the Thomas Chapters in Suiko3 as a side quest, since you don't have to participate in them to win the game, then yeah, that is a really good one.
Getting Mcdohl in Suiko 2 is a fun and interesting side quest as well.
And that's is all I can think of at the moment. |
